LEARNING TORAH, LOVING TORAH, LIVING TORAH
Dear Parents and Friends,
We have all been on a journey. Although we were
together, we were separate. Our destination was
the same, our routes were the same, but our
personal “take-away” was different. The journey
from Rosh Chodesh Elul through Simchas Torah
transported us to elevated places in our hearts and
minds.
Very soon this year’s Yomim Noraim will become a
silhouette of memories to be recalled less
frequently as the year goes by.
Each year I try to find a souvenir to capture my
experiences in a meaningful and growth-oriented
manner. This year my souvenir came encased in a
poem that appeared in the Mishpacha magazine
(Rosh Hoshana edition). This poem was embedded
in another article with a specific message. As I read
this poem, I gleaned from it a personal message
which I would like to share with you:
“… A workbench at a camp by a deep Adirondack
Lake, learning how to braid long plastic strips
into a lanyard, a gift for my mother
… gave me life … nursed me in many a sick room,
lifted spoons of medicine to my lips laid cold face
cloths
on my forehead…
… “Here are thousands of meals… clothing… a
good education,
… Here, mother, is a breathing body and a beating
heart, strong legs, bones, and teeth, and two
clear eyes to read the world. So here, mother is
the lanyard I made for you at camp.
A little boy’s mother gave him life, nourished him,
nurtured him, educated him, protected him, and
most of all loved him unconditionally. How did the
child show his gratitude? He made her a lanyard, a
simple lanyard. No doubt, he crafted the lanyard
out of his love and gratitude. In his mind, this
simple gift expressed quintessential appreciation
for all that his mother had done for him.
As a mother, I can safely assume that the mother
accepted her son’s gift as if she was given a
priceless treasure. No crown jewel can compare in
value to a gift made by a child and presented to his
mother with his own little hands and his very big
heart.
There is a larger and more intrinsic message, I
believe, in this poem. Each morning we are blessed
with a new day gifted to us by Hashem. He
provides us with all of our needs. Our heavenly
Father may not always give us what we think we
want; but He ALWAYS gives us what we need. Just
like the mother in the poem, He gives us all the
resources to thrive and succeed in life. He gives us
a magnificent world in which to find happiness and
spiritual joy. He has given us the Torah as our map
to find life’s treasures, and He has given us the
strength to overcome the challenges. He gives us a
Rosh Hoshanah to awaken us to His Sovereignty,
He gives us a Yom Kippur in which all He wants is
to forgive us, and He gives us a Yom Tov of Succos
during which we can rejoice by singing, and
dancing with our precious Torah.
Hashem expects so little from us. Yes, we daven a
few times a day; yes, we devote a few weeks to
connecting to Hashem, but does it really compare
to what Hashem gives us?
This is my Yom Tov take-away:
We need to show Hakoras Hatov to Hashem for
each and every gift He gives us. We cannot take
the shining sun, blossoming flowers, the twinkling
stars, and His unconditional love for us for
granted. No amount of gratitude can ever be
sufficient, but we have to try. Hashem wants so
little from us, and He will give us so much. A
lanyard for a mother; a Thank You for Hashem.
