External nose

External nose: neurovascular supply

Nasal cavity The nasal cavity is divided by a septum into two cavities; each has:

• Roof: sphenoid, cribriform plate of ethmoid, frontal, nasal

• Floor: hard palate (palatine process of the maxilla and tr. pr. of palatine bone)

• Lateral Wall: ethmoid, maxilla, lacrimal, palatine, sphenoid, inferior concha.

• Medial Wall: nasal septum

Lateral Wall of the nose

• It shows 3 conchae

• It shows 3 meatuses

& shenoethmoidal

recess

• It receives the

openings of the

paranasal sinuses

and nosolacrimal

duct.

• It shows the agger

nasi

Lateral Wall of the nose

• Bulla

ethmoidalis

• Hiatus

semilunaris

&

infundibulum

Openings in the lateral wall

Medial wall (nasal septum)

• Perpendicular

plate of the

ethmoid &

vomer.

• Septal cartilge

Mucous membrane

• Olfactory mucous

membrane: lines

the roof, the upper

surface of the superior

concha and a

corresponding area on

the nasal septum.

• Modified skin: lines the vestibule.

• Respiratory

mucous

membrane: lines

the rest of the nasal

cavity

Nerve supply

• Olfactory nerve

• Nerves of general

sensation:

– Ophthalmic n: ant. ethm. n.

– Maxillary n: nasal,

nasopalatine & palatine br.

of the pterygopalatine

ganglion.

Vascular supply Arterial supply:

– Sphenopalatine a.: from the

maxill.a.

– Ant. & post. Ethmoidal a. from the

ophthalmic a.

– Lateral nasal and septal

branches from the facial a.

Venous drainage: a rich venous plexus is found under

the mucous membrane which is

drained by veins accompanying

the arteries

Lymph drainage: Vestibule drains into the submandibular L.N.

Rest of the nasal cavity drains into the upper

deep cervical L.N.

Epistaxis

• Bleeding from the nose may be:

• Venous (from the venous plexus)

• or arterial mostly occurs on the anteroinferior part of the septum from the anastomosis between the septal branch of the superior labial br. of the facial artery and the shenopalatine artery in the vestibule.

Paranasal sinuses

• Def.: air-filled cavities in the bones

surrounding the nose.

• Where!: frontal, ethmoid, sphenoid,maxilla

• Why! :resonance of the voice, lightening

the weight of the skull & air conditioning.

• When!: appear after birth (only the maxillary and sphenoid

sinuses appear at birth) and grow with age.
