Preface
I have the honor to introduce these valuable historical lectures notes given by
Professor Dr. Erwin Schrödinger on Space–Time Structure in the academic year
1946 – 1947 to the Ph.D. students at the School of Theoretical Physics, Institute for
Advanced Studies in Dublin. These are day-by day hand-written lectures by our Late
Professor Dr. Wadei Attallah Bassali, who was a Ph.D. student of Quantum
Mechanics at the Institute during that period. Professor Bassali was my MSc.
Supervisor of Quantum Mechanics from 1967 to 1970 at the Faculty of Science,
Alexandria University. He gifted me his notes; along with many other valuable notes
and text books in various fields of theoretical physics; upon his resignation from our
department. Later on, he moved to reside in USA and passed away.
When I decided to publish these notes, I presented the matter on some Editors of
our Editorial-Board Members of Alexandria Journals of Mathematics and Physics
and a decision was made to publish these lectures in their original hand-written shape
due to their great and valuable benefits for all scientists around the world. The
comments and simplifications made by Professor Schrödinger in these lectures on
Einstein’s general theory of relativity are extremely useful for all students and
researchers who are interested in theoretical physics.
Honoring the memory and legacy of my dearest Professor Bassali, I publish his
lectures and dedicate this publication to all my colleagues at the Department of
Mathematics and Computer Science, Alexandria University, Egypt. I am also
grateful to professor Dirk Callebaut, the Editor-in-Chief of Alexandria Journal of
Physics, for his valuable comments and support.
I hope that these lectures will be useful to mathematicians, physicists, chemists
and all other specialists in related topics.
