What I did: In the spring we worked with reading and themes, analyzing fables, “The Storyteller,” and “The Lottery” for themes. We then decided on a theme and created our own book for children illustrating the theme.
Skills learned & used: Reading comprehension, recognizing a theme, finding evidence that supports a theme, and discovering how a theme is developed over the course of a text. ATL and LP also appropriate here.
Main standard addressed: LAFS.8.RL.1.2.Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text.
How I think these skills
will benefit me in the future?

Skills learned and used: Reading comprehension, creating a claim, summarizing text, citing sources, organizing an essay, creating a focus for writing, and using multiple sources to write on one topic. (ATL or LP)

In Dangerous Love
By: Biyanca Punnara
They met in Scotland 1992 in the commoner part of town. Ever since then they have been in
love. About a week ago Joshua Proposed to Faith. Now today, in 1994, Scotland’s town priest, Stacey is
marrying them. Afterwards they plan to take a trip to Scotland’s Honeymoon Castle for two weeks.
Over in Scotland, the police and investigators were dealing with a psychotic murder case. Jake
and Marie where the top couple, and main detective team on the case. Officer Jake and investigator
Marie went all over town asking questions. To cover more ground this week they divided. Marie took
the commoner part of the town, while Jake questioned the other half of the town. By this time Joshua
and Faith have already been honeymooning in the Scotland’s Honeymoon Castle for a week.
It was already late, but Jake had one more place to investigate: the honeymoon castle. Joshua and
Faith were asleep, when the psycho personality awoke in Joshua. Jake knocked on the door and Joshua
answered, Joshua invited Jake in and took him around the house, down the hall, and into the kitchen
where he killed Jake with a rigid butcher knife.
Faith woke up and went to see what had happened. She stumbled upon a room, which had the
most odorous, foul smell. She opened the door and found a pile of dead bodies. Atop the body of Jake
laid there lifeless. Faith then saw Joshua…
"What happened? What, What is this?" she cried while hyperventilating. She then noticed
something shine in his hand: the knife. "This, this isn't Joshua, “she thought as she screamed, "Joshua,
Joshua this isn’t you!”
She then fell unconscious to the floor, unable to bear the stress of the horrific scene before her.
Joshua stabbed Faith right above the heart. Her piercing yell brought him back to reality, but it
was too late she had lost too much blood. Joshua took her bloody red-stained body into his arms.
What I did: In class we analyzed the story “The Tell-Tale Heart.” We examined the story’s structure and use of sensory words, tone and mood. We then wrote and shared our own scary stories.
Skills learned and used: Writing using mood and tone, writing a narrative, using sensory language. (ATL and LP here too)
Standards addressed: LAFS.8.W.1.3Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and
well-structured event sequences.
(you can list more than one standard)
