This%was%a%creative%writing%lesson%that%taught%my%2nd%graders%the%basic%format%of%narrative%writing.%I%began%with%a%preFassessment%to%gain%what%knowledge%the%children%had%about%narrative%writing%through%the%use%of%a%KWL%chart.%I%asked%the%students%to%list%what%they%knew%and%wanted%to%know%about%narrative%writing.%We%discussed%responses.%The%next%day,%we%read%a%Scholastic%Newspaper%about%the%process%an%author%goes%through%to%create%a%story.%This%helped%them%to%see%all%the%work%and%thought%that%goes%in%to%story%writing.%I%created%an%anchor%chart%so%the%children%could%view%the%skills%being%presented%to%them.%Next,%I%took%the%children%to%the%iPad%lounge%at%our%school.%%We%reviewed%the%parts%of%a%story%and%why%they%are%important%I%introduced%the%children%to%the%app%Puppet%Pals.%%I%created%a%“puppet%show”,%using%the%app%that%showed%the%puppets%having%a%setting,%problem,%and%solution.%%I%then%told%the%students%that%I%wanted%them%to%be%creative%and%create%a%puppet%show%on%the%app%that%did%the%same.%%I%wanted%to%get%them%excited%about%story%telling%and%make%sure%they%had%a%true%understanding%of%the%parts%to%a%story.%%The%children%shared%their%Puppet%Pal%creations%with%the%class,%and%we%discussed%the%story%elements%is%them.%%This%allowed%me%to%see%who%still%needed%help%in%developing%a%story.%I%then%wanted%to%give%the%children%the%chance%to%collaborate%with%an%expert,%so%we%did%a%creative%writing%lesson%by%Skyping%with%Mrs.%P,%a%professional%storyteller%from%California.%%Mrs.%P%told%the%children%a%story%that%included%characters,%setting,%a%problem,%and%a%solution.%%She%then%discussed%with%the%children%what%makes%a%story%a%“GOOD”%story.%%She%had%them%identify%the%parts%of%the%story%she%told,%including%the%climax,%beginning,%middle,%and%end,%and%then%discussed%what%the%story%would%be%like%if%it%were%missing%any%of%those%elements.%She%then%had%them%play%a%word%game%that%she%said%exercised%their%imaginations.%I%was%able%to%work%one%on%one%during%center%time%the%next%few%days%with%the%children%who%needed%extra%support%in%creating%a%story%with%the%correct%elements.%%After%I%could%tell%the%entire%class%had%a%good%understanding,%I%introduced%the%website%Storybird%to%the%children.%%I%had%already%set%each%child%up%with%an%account,%username,%and%password.%%I%modeled%how%to%use%Storybird%and%created%a%story%whole%group%so%the%children%could%watch%it%on%the%promethean%board.%%As%I%demonstrated%the%use%of%the%website,%I%asked%questions%along%the%way%(asking%children%to%give%thumbs%up%and%thumbs%down)%to%formatively%assess%students%understanding%of%Storybird.%%I%told%the%children%that%they%were%to%create%a%narrative%story%that%contains%characters,%setting,%problem,%and%solution%and%publish%it.%I%told%them%the%story%needed%to%have%a%distinct%beginning,%middle,%and%end%as%well.%%I%gave%the%children%a%week%to%create%their%stories,%and%I%continued%to%work%one%on%one%with%children%that%needed%help%creating%their%stories.%The%higher%children%were%given%a%learning%contract%that%allowed%them%to%work%at%an%appropriate%pace,%target%their%learning%style,%work%independently,%learn%planning%skills,%and%eliminate%unnecessary%skill%practice.%After%the%stories%were%completed,%I%communicated%with%the%students%that%they%would%be%presenting%their%stories%to%the%class%explaining%the%elements%included.%%%I%told%the%children%told%the%children%they%could%choose%to%create%a%PowerPoint/Screencast%or%an%Aurasma%to%explain%the%elements%of%their%story.%%The%Aurasma%would%benefit%the%more%outgoing/less%shy%children,%and%the%Screencast%would%allow%the%more%introverted%children%to%present%their%stories%for%everyone%but%they%don't%have%to%stand%up%and%present%it.%The%majority%of%the%children%chose%Aurasma%and%I%told%them%to%draw%a%picture%to%show%the%book%cover.%%This%became%the%target%picture%for%Aurasma.%%I%then%recorded%the%children%giving%a%summary%of%their%book%and%connected%to%the%target%picture.%When%we%scanned%the%picture%with%the%iPad,%their%recording%of%the%book%summary%popped%out.%%The%students%LOVED%this.%%I%ended%the%lesson%with%the%children%filling%in%the%“learned”%section%of%our%KWL%and%I%made%an%assessment%using%Google%Forms%on%the%elements%of%a%story.%%%%%%%

For%a%preFassessment%to%writing,%I%will%pass%out%a%KWL%for%the%students%to%fill%out.%%I%will%ask%them%to%tell%me%what%they%know%about%story%writing%and%questions%they%need%answering%about%story%writing.%%Students%will%be%asked%questions%along%the%way%using%information%I%gained%through%the%FIP%modules.%%I%will%have%clear%learning%targets%set,%learning%activities%developed,%a%written%response%assessment%on%story%elements%will%be%given%at%the%end%of%the%lesson,%and%my%student%teacher%and%I%will%personally%asses%each%student%to%make%sure%they%understood%the%task.%%The%children%will%be%responsible%for%publishing%a%narrative%story%on%Storybird%demonstrating%their%knowledge%of%story%elements.%%Products%are%differentiated%in%that%children%will%orally%present%their%stories%using%screencast%or%Aurasma.%%Students%will%be%given%the%choice%as%to%which%program%they%will%use.%%One%choice%requires%students%to%be%seen%and%the%other%allows%for%only%voices%to%be%recorded.%This%allows%children%the%opportunity%to%choose%a%presentation%method%that%they%are%most%comfortable%using.%%The%higher%children%will%be%given%a%learning%contract%that%allows%them%to%work%at%an%appropriate%pace,%target%their%learning%style,%work%independently,%learn%planning%skills,%and%eliminate%unnecessary%skill%practice.%A%rubric%will%be%shown%to%the%students%prior%to%the%task%completion,%so%they%will%know%what%the%expected%outcome%should%look%like%and%include.%%Interest%centers%will%be%set%up%at%center%time%to%ignite%the%“creative%writing%flame”%for%the%students.%%Different%types%of%stories%and%writing%prompts%will%be%provided%to%keep%them%engaged%and%involved%so%they%will%stay%on%task%while%others%are%working%on%the%computers.%%%

Technology%promotes%student%learning%by%allowing%students%to%complete%authentic%and%meaningful%narrative%writing%using%twentyFfirst%century%Web%2.0%tools%to%enrich%their%knowledge%and%understanding.%%Technology%also%allowed%students%to%work%at%their%own%pace.%%Graphic%organizers%(The%KWL),%a%rubric,%and%an%anchor%chart%will%always%be%up%in%the%room%for%children%to%view.%%Digital%tools%used%are%Puppet%Pals,%Skype,%Storybird,%PPT,%Screencast/and%or%Aurasma.%%Students%will%watch%the%tutorial%on%Storybird%to%explain%the%procedures%for%using%the%program.%%Students%will%need%previous%knowledge%of%how%to%create%a%PowerPoint,%type%on%a%keyboard,%and%use%an%iPad%before%this%lesson%is%taught.%%Other%strategies%like%screencast%and%Aurasma%will%be%taught%to%the%children%before%the%projects%are%implemented.%%A%rubric%will%be%given%to%students%prior%to%the%implementation%of%the%projects%so%they%will%know%what%is%expected.%%I%will%also%need%to%sign%my%class%up%to%go%to%the%iPad%lounge%to%work%on%Puppet%Pals.%%--Instructional-Plan-Preparation%(What%student%needs,-interests,-and-prior-learning%provide%a%foundation%for%this%lesson?%How%can%you%find%out%if%students%have%this%foundation?%What%difficulties%might%students%have?)%

Students%will%be%preFassessed%on%story%elements%and%writing%through%the%use%of%the%KWL%chart.%Each%child%will%be%given%a%KWL,%and%write%sentences/words%expressing%their%prior%knowledge%of%effective%story%writing.%%This%will%allow%me%to%see%what%children%may%need%extra%support%and%which%ones%need%more%enrichment.%Students%have%been%reading%multiple%narrative%stories%in%class,%all%have%written%some%narrative%stories%on%paper,%and%they%have%had%multiple%chapter%books%read%to%them%in%class%time%before%the%lesson%occurred.%%Time%had%been%given%to%students%during%center%time%throughout%this%school%year%to%practice%typing%skills%on%the%computer%using%the%program%Type%to%Learn.%%Students%may%need%extra%support%with%the%website%Storybird,%since%this%will%be%the%first%time%they%have%written%stories%on%this%website.%%%

I%have%5%computers%and%10%laptops%available%for%the%children%to%work%on%the%projects%in%my%classroom%and%I%have%nineteen%children%in%my%class.%%I%will%be%implementing%the%Storybird%writing%aspect%of%this%lesson%during%center%time,%so%all%children%will%be%engaged%in%an%activity.%The%children%will%participate%in%this%activity%during%their%small%group%instruction%time%that%was%established%at%the%beginning%of%the%school%year.%%I%have%a%student%teacher%this%year%that%will%be%able%to%help%me%monitor%the%children%during%centers%to%make%sure%all%are%on%task%and%correctly%using%the%website%to%individually%write%their%stories.%%Students%will%also%have%access%to%laptops%during%the%mornings%to%allow%for%more%time%to%develop%stories.%%I%am%able%to%email%back%and%forth%with%the%IT%assigned%to%my%school%during%the%time%frame%of%this%lesson%if%any%problems%do%occur%with%the%technology.%%More%time%will%be%given%to%students%to%complete%the%task%if%there%are%internet%or%technical%problems%that%arise.%If%the%loss%of%Internet%occurs,%children%can%type%their%stories%into%Microsoft%Word%instead.%For%the%Skype%lesson,%I%wanted%the%children%to%be%able%to%sit%freely%at%their%desks%to%observe%the%storyteller,%so%they%would%all%be%able%to%see%the%lesson%and%actively%engage%in%it,%but%I%do%not%have%a%camera%attached%to%my%promethean%board.%%I%was%worried%we%would%all%have%to%crowd%around%my%laptop%for%the%Skype%lesson,%and%I%foresaw%a%disaster.%%I%was%able%to%contact%my%IT,%and%she%showed%me%how%to%set%up%my%docking%camera%to%show%the%Skype%call.%%This%solved%a%huge%issue%for%me%and%allowed%the%children%to%view%the%story%teller%from%their%seats.%%%One%problem%that%I%foresaw%happening%with%Aurasma%is%the%time%it%takes%to%create%one%for%each%individual%child.%It%is%hard%to%get%into%the%iPad%lounge%everyday%and%we%were%told%that%the%iPads%could%not%leave%the%iPad%lounge%that%is%located%in%the%library.%%There%are%only%30%iPads%available%for%a%school%that%has%about%800%students.%%I%scheduled%a%meeting%with%my%principal%to%share%with%her%my%assignment%and%concerns,%and%she%allowed%me%to%take%an%iPad%from%the%lounge%to%use%in%my%room%during%the%creations%of%the%children’s%Aurasmas.%While%my%student%teacher%taught%my%small%group%reading%and%centers%were%going%on,%I%was%able%to%take%children%out%one%at%a%time%for%3%days%to%create%the%Aurasmas.%%I%only%had%two%children%choose%the%screencast,%so%I%am%glad%that%I%was%able%to%have%access%to%an%iPad.%%Children%were%also%given%a%time%limit%on%their%presentations%to%cut%down%on%misbehaviors%occurring%from%other%students%that%have%short%attention%spans.%%%%Instructional-Strategies-and-Learning-Activities%–%Describe%the%researchFbased%instructional%strategies%you%will%use%with%this%lesson.%How%will%your%learning%environment%support%these%activities?%What%is%your%role?%What%are%the%students'%roles%in%the%lesson?%How%can%you%ensure%higher-order-thinking-at-the-analysis,-evaluation,-or-creativity-levels-of-Bloom’s-Taxonomy?%%How%can%the%technology%support%your%teaching?%What%authentic,%relevant,%and%meaningful%learning%activities%and%tasks%will%your%students%complete?%How%will%they%build%knowledge%and%skills?%How%will%students%use%digital%tools%and%resources%to%communicate-and-collaborate%with%each%other%and%others?%%How%will%you%facilitate%the%collaboration?%

I%feel%that%this%lesson%was%one%of%my%best%lessons%in%16%years%of%teaching.%%The%technology%tools%and%programs%that%I%was%able%to%use%added%so%much%more%to%the%lesson%and%I%feel%I%was%able%to%achieve%a%lesson%with%a%high%LoTi%level%because%of%these%tools.%%I%loved%the%fact%that%I%was%able%to%connect%with%a%professional%storyteller%via%Skype%that%took%the%lesson%outside%of%my%classroom.%%I%feel%that%by%the%end%of%the%lesson%the%children%had%a%true%and%deep%understanding%about%narrative%writing%and%how%to%produce%good%story%elements.%%Having%the%rubric%planned%ahead%of%time%also%allowed%the%children%to%know%what%was%expected%of%them%and%helped%most%of%them%to%develop%well%written%stories%using%Storybird.%%One%problem%that%arose%with%Storybird%was%that%when%a%students%finished%working%on%his/her%story%for%the%day,%he/she%would%just%exit%out%of%the%program%without%logging%out.%%When%the%next%student%went%to%get%on%the%computer,%Storybird%would%automatically%put%them%in%the%last%child’s%account.%%I%had%a%tiny%mess%on%my%hands%when%I%realized%this%was%happening%and%I%had%children’s%stories%that%they%had%written%in%other%children’s%accounts.%%Luckily%I%was%able%to%move%the%stories%from%one%account%to%another,%but%it%did%take%some%time%figuring%out%whose%stories%were%whose.%%I%had%a%big%discussion%with%the%children%on%the%importance%of%logging%out%of%Storybird%when%they%finished%writing%for%the%day.%%That%would%be%the%big%thing%I%would%want%to%make%sure%I%told%others%who%wanted%to%implement%this%lesson%to%know.%%%%
