“LESSONS FROM JONAH”

LESSONS FROM JONAH• We are surveying the book, reading our way

through it...• Making observations as we go along• Offering lessons to be gleaned from each section

TIMEFRAME IN WHICH JONAH WORKED• 2 Kings 10:32: “In those days [Jehu's reign] the

LORD began to reduce the size of Israel’s territory.”

TIMEFRAME IN WHICH JONAH WORKED• 2 Kings 14:25 “He [Jeroboam II] restored the territory

of Israel from the entrance of Hamath to the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word of the Lord God of Israel, which He had spoken through His servant Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet who was from Gath Hepher.” (NKJV)

THE BOOK OF JONAH Chapter 1 – Jonah Runs Away from God Chapter 2 – Jonah Runs Toward God Chapter 3 – Jonah Runs With God

Chapter 4 – Jonah Runs Ahead of God

CHAPTER 3 – JONAH RUNS WITH GOD

• Jonah preaches at Nineveh

• The People of Nineveh Believe

LESSONS FROM CHAPTER 3

• Matthew 12:41, “The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here.”

• National sin demands national repentance!

• Jeremiah 18:7-10

• Psalm 2

• 1Corinthians 6:9-11

CHAPTER 4 – JONAH RUNS AHEAD OF GOD

• Jonah’s anger vs. God’s Kindness

• Jonah reflects the very spirit of the Jewish people: Jehovah was their God, and He was not to be shared with any other people.

• He had the same attitude as the older brother of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-31)

• With all of that before us, let us be careful in how we judge Jonah.

LESSONS FROM CHAPTER 4

• With the wrong attitude…

• We are liable to become selfish grumblers, petty

• We need to see and appreciate God's nature…

• He is gracious

• He is merciful

• He is slow to anger

THE BOOK OF JONAH IS OF GREAT VALUE TO ALL CHRISTIANS...

• Never pre-judge others…

• And do not try to avoid the responsibility God has placed on you

• Let us strive to make sure we do not have a selfish, sectarian spirit

• We ought to be concerned for all the wicked, whoever and wherever they are!

THE BOOK OF JONAH IS OF GREAT VALUE TO THOSE CAUGHT UP IN SIN...

• God loves you…

• Destruction is coming...

• But He sent Christ and the apostles to reveal His will and save you

• Today He has His preachers and teachers to warn you

• Salvation is available wherever there is true repentance and obedience!
