RegularvisitorstotheLeeWeeNamLibrarywouldhavenoticedthatwehavebeenmakingincrementalchangestoimprovethe
ambienceandfacilitiesinthispopularlocationoncampusinthelastfewyears.Thisyear,weopenedupthefrontentrancetoimprovetraffic,rearrangedthe layout inLevel2andcreateda largequietsanctuaryonthe5thLevel.
Wewillbeintroducinganothersignificantchange,thistimeatLevel2inFebruaryof2010.TheareaprecedingthebankofcomputerswillberedesignedasasmallexperimentalLearningCommons.TheCommonsisanareadesignedtofacilitateandenhancestudents’grouplearningactivities.Studentswillenjoyworkingtogetherusingvariousconfigurationsofcomputersandequipment.Forexample,yourgroupcangotooneofthepodsandusethesmartboardtodiscussandworkonyourprojectorassignment.Theinteractivesmart board can be used like an enlarged touch screen where
you can capture your discussion or use it for mockpresentations before the real thing in
yourclasses.Theseats
willbeflexiblewithinthepodtosuityourpurpose.Therewill be 3 podswith smartboardsandanother3withsmallertouchscreens.
AsmallRecordingRoomattheendoftheCommonswill provide youwith an enclosed spacetoengageinsmallscaleaudioorvideorecordingquicklyand conveniently.The Recording Room will be equipped withfairly goodAV recording equipment, a green screen and chromakeysoftwareforprofessionallookingresults.Oryoucouldusetheroomtomakeasimplehighqualitypodcast.
ThemainpartoftheCommonswillfeature2-screenand3-screenPCstationsoncustom-designedworkbenches.Themultimonitorswillprovideyouwithbiggerscreenreal-estateandenableyoutoopenupmoreapplicationsallatonego.Itisfunandproductiveatthesametime.

Checking out library books is now faster!Follow4easystepstoenjoytheconveniencethatRFID(RadioFrequencyIdentification)technologybrings:
RFIDstandsfor“Radio Frequency Identification Device”.AuniqueRFIDtagisattachedinsideeachbookjustlikeabarcode.However,unlikeabarcodewhichrequiresscanningwithabarcodescanner,theinformationinthetagcanbereadjustbeplacingitnearaRFIDdetector.
TheLibraryintroducedRFIDtechnologytoprovidegreaterefficiencyinhandlinglibrarymaterials.
SinceApril2009,morethan600,000librarymaterialsweretaggedandthesystemwaslaunchedinSeptember2009.
Besidesenablingfastercheck-outs,booksreturnedthroughBookReturnslocatedatlibrariesareclearedfromusers’accountsimmediately.Thesystemalsoreducessorting,shelf-readingandstock-takingwork.
You no longer need to open a book when using self-check machines.

The mini Learning Commons will helptheLibraryunderstandbettertheneedsand preference of students in grouplearning. Observation and feedbackgathered from its usewill help us planuseful and attractive learning space inourfuturelibrarybuildings.
TheimplementationofthisLearningCommonsissupportedbythe Cool Campus Initiative coordinated by CITS. Planning andimplementationof theCommonswasundertakenbya teamofLibrarystaff.
Other projects that will see fruition in the early part of 2010includethenewLibraryInstructionalHubwhichwillprovidemore
places for library classes. There willalsobesomereconfigurationofspacesin the Business Library, including thecreationofaninformationlounge.TheHumanities&SocialSciencesLibrarywillbe setting up a small outdoor readingarea in the“courtyard”, completewithumbrellas, fans, lights, powerpoints fornotebook PC users and support forwirelessprinting.

TheLibrarysubscribestoover196electronicdatabasescoveringarangeofsubjectsinBusiness,ChineseStudies,ComputerScience,Engineering,Sciences,HumanitiesandSocialSciences.Evenlibrarianssometimesfinditdifficulttorememberwhateachofthesedatabaseshasandthefeaturesavailable.

Formostofus,ourknowledgeof theCopyrightAct isprobablylimitedtothefairuseportionwhichallowsphotocopyingofworksamounting to one chapter or not more than 10% of the totalnumberofpagesofapublishedworkforresearchorprivatestudy.
What exactly is copyright and what does it protect?Copyrightisthetermusedtodescribethebundleofrightsthatisgrantedtotheauthorofthecopyrightwork,givinghimtheexclusiverightstopublish,perform,reproduce,communicateandadapthiswork(Ng-Loy&Tan,2009;IPOS,2007).TheCopyrightAct(Cap63),passedin1987,protectsthefollowing:“original literary,dramatic,artistic and musical works, sound recordings, films, broadcastsand cable programmes, and the formatof published editionsofliterary,dramatic,musicalorartisticworks” (Woon,1995;p147).Whilecopyrightprotectstheexpressionorformofideas,theideasthemselvesarenotprotected(IPOS,2007).
So,comingbacktoouroriginalquestion,canyoucopyrightfood?From thedefinition above, itwould be impossible to copyrightchickenriceortherecipeforthedish.Whataboutpatentingtherecipe? It is likelytoberejectedbythepatentoffice,according
tolawyerBryanTanofKeystoneLawCorporation,asthename“chickenrice”istoogenericandpopular(TheStraitsTimes,19Sept 2009). Can Malaysia“lay claim” to these hawker centrestaple?ItwillbelikeItalytryingtolayclaimonpizzaandGermanyonhotdog,bothsynonymoustoandubiquitousinAmerica.
So,fornow,weneednotworryaboutorderingabowlofspicycoconutsoupnoodleorthatplateofricecookedwithchickenbroth;theyarestilllaksaandchickenrice.
