HOW ARE SOUNDS MADE?
Have a look at the video and the text provided. Make some notes about how sound is created and how it travels.
Key skill
listen carefully to presentations using techniques to remember the main points, e.g. making notes, summarising
HOW ARE SOUNDS MADE?
Use the instruments to investigate how they make a sound.
Choose an instruments and make a presentation about how it makes a sound.
Key skillexplain information and ideas, exploring and using ways to be convincing, e.g. use of vocabulary, gesture, visual aids
THE BALLOON EXPERIMENT
Make a Level 4 prediction about what you think will happen.
Key skilluse conditionals to show hypotheses or possibilities, e.g. if, might, could
Straw Investigation

LOUD AND QUIET
Use this link and the real instruments to investigate how we make a loud sound and a quiet sound.
Make your voice louder!Experiment: To create a megaphone and discover how we can make our voices louder and how we can hear more.Materials:
You will need- Sticky tape.A scissors.A large sheet of paper.Method:What you have to do-1) Roll the paper into a cone.2) Stick tape along the edge of the rolled paper to secure it.3) Put the cone over your mouth and talk into it.4) Put the cone to your ear. Results:What happens when you put the cone to your ear? What happens when you put the cone to your mouth and speak?
LOUD NOISE CHALLENGE
Use your sheet of paper to make the loudest noise possible.
Search to find out how to make a paper banger
Where and how will you search for information? Why?
Make your own paper banger
How do you think it makes a noise?
Why do you think that?
WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW
Write a letter to the director to explain which instrument to use and why.
Key skilluse different sentence structures, including complex sentences showing relationships of time, or cause, e.g. before you start … , if you do this then …

Talking String!Experiment: To prove / examine how sound can travel through objects.Materials:
You will need-Two pieces of tracing paper. One pencil.Sticky tape.String.Two rubber bands. Two paper clips. Two cardboard tube.Method:What you have to do-1) Fold a piece of tracing paper over one end of each tube.2) Fix it with a rubber band.3) Pull the paper tight and tape it to the tubes.4) Thread the string through both holes.5) Tie a paperclip to each end to stop the string slipping back through.6) Use the tubes as a simple telephone.7)Hold one tube to your ear and listen while your friend speaks softly into the other tube.
Write a prediction toexplain what you think will happen. Why will this happen? Remember to use scientific language.
Results:What happens? Conclusions:Why do you think this is happening? What happens when you place cotton wool into the tubes? Why?
MEASURING SOUND
Use the digital sensor kit to find the loudest room in school.
Use the given line graph to interpret the results.
Use the results from the table to create a line graph.
