LIMERICKSLimerick poems appeared in the fourteenth century in England. They were used in Nursery Rhymes and other poems for children. Limericks have remained popular over the years. They were named due to the location of Limerick – the third largest city in Ireland. Irish limericks are often found to be the most popular.

It has still been discussed: is the limerick a form of poetry or are limericks just childish rhymes? Even Shakespeare, the great poet did in fact write limericks which can be found in two of his greatest plays – “Othello” and “King Lear”.

Limericks - the form

1) Out dining, a young alligator,2) When asked if he’d have coffee later,3) Just shook his large head4) And pleasantly said,5) “I was planning on having the waiter.”

• Limericks have five lines• Lines 1, 2, and 5 of limericks are long and rhyme with one another. • Lines 3 and 4 are short and also rhyme with each other.• The limerick usually begins by introducing a person and a place and has a surprise in the last line.

May the 12 is Limerick Day. It celebrates the birthday of one of the world’s greatest limerick-writers, Edward Lear (1812-1888).

Edward Lear was an English poet, illustrator and artist famous for “literary nonsense” and especially for his limericks.
