Chelsea

•  Chelseawasahearingimpairedadultwhobeganherfirstlanguageacquisitioninherearlythirties.Herlanguageshowgrosssemanticandsyntacticdeficienciesdespiterelativelynormalnonlinguisticcognitiveandsocialfunctionplusgoodlexicalability.

•  Theonlydeprivationsheexperiencedwaslinguistic.Shewasraisedinalovingenvironmentbutherdeafnesswasnotdiagnoseduntilshewasanadult.

Genie

•  WhenGeniewas13.5yearsofage,Genie’smotherescapedwithherandstayedwithherownmother.

•  Whenshewenttoapplyforaidfortheblind,shewentinthroughawrongdoorandendedupinthefamilywelfarebuildingwherethesocialworkersawGenieandrealisedthattherewassomethingwrong.OnthedayofthetrialofGenie’sparents,thefathercommittedsuicide.

•  Genieneverreallygainedthefulluseof‘language’orothersocialskills.Sheendedupinahomeforcognitivelyimpairedadults.

•  SheseemstohavebeendiscoveredaftertheCriticalPeriodforLanguageacquisitionwasover(aftertheonsetofPuberty).
