Linkages between ISO 26000:2010 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Background
The ISO 26000 Post Publication Organisation (PPO) sometimes produces documents that support the
understanding and application of ISO 26000. In line with stakeholder recommendations from its Stockholm
meeting 2016, PPO decided to help ISO develop a brochure on ISO 26000 and the UN Sustainable Development
Goals. It was also decided to create a PPO document that showed the more detailed linkages between ISO
26000 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals and targets.
Experts, Adriana Rosenfeld from National University of Luján (UNLU) and Cristina López from Fundación el
Otro in Argentina, produced this linkage document through a focus on the more than 250 expectations of the
7 core subjects and the 37 issues of ISO 26000:2010. The study did not consider UN Sustainable Development
Goal 17 nor the alphabetical goals as these are oriented towards states and not towards organizations.
The analysis showed that ISO 26000:2010 Guidance on Social Responsibility provides a good framework for
companies and organizations to contribute to the implementation of the Agenda 2030, strongly sharing the
objective to promote integrated sustainable environmental, social and economic development.
How to use this document
Companies and organizations can use this document to identify the recommended actions and expectations
that relate to their contribution to the UN sustainable development goals and targets. This document conatins
two different approaches:
• Table A “From Issue to Target” can be used to identify which of the ISO 26000 actions taken by an
organization contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals and Targets
• Table B “From Target to Issue” can be used to identify which of the UN Sustainable Development Goals
and Targets that are not yet covered by recommended ISO 26000 actions
