INTRODUCTION

Listening is the conscious processing of the auditory stimuli that have been perceived through hearing.

“Semiotician” Roland Barthes characterized the distinction between listening and hearing as "Hearing is a physiological phenomenon; listening is a psychological act."

TYPES OF LISTENING

APPRECIATIVE LISTENING-> This is the listening for driving aesthetic

pleasure ,as we do when we listen to comedian ,musician or entertainer.

EMPATHETIC LISTENING-> When we listen to a distressed friend who wants

to vent his feelings ,we provide emotional and moral support in the form of empathetic listening.

COMPREHENSIVE LISTENING-> This type of listening is needed in the classroom

when students have to listen to the lecturer to understand and comprehend the message.

CRITICAL LISTENING-> When the purpose is to accept and reject the

message or to evaluate it critically one require this type of listening . For example ,listening to sales person.

TRAITS OF A GOOD LISTENER Being non evaluate.

Paraphrasing.

Reflecting implication.

Reflecting hidden feelings.

Inviting further contributions.

Responding non-verbally.

ACTIVE VS PASSIVE

ACTIVE LISTENING->

PASSIVE LISTENING-> When a person is practicing passive listening,

he is sitting quietly without responding to what the speaker is saying. When you listen to music or a podcast you are practicing passive. listening

RULES OF GOOD LISTENING

BARRIERS TO EFFECTIVE LISTENING Interrupting – knowing the answer.Trying to be helpful.Seeing discussion as competition.Distraction - red flag words –

emotional triggers.Gap searching

CONCLUSION

You don’t listen with your ears.You listen with your eyes and with your sense of touch you listen with your mind, your heart , your imagination [EGAN GREGARD].

A good conversationalist is popular , a good listener is even more so . Talk only if you have something to say.
