St Stephen ‟ s Pr imary Schoo l

This week all the children of St

Stephen’s Primary have taken

part in Litter Week. There have

been many activities taking place

across the school and all of the

children have been involved in

litter picking in the local area.

Each class, armed with litter

pickers, gloves and rubbish bags,

took to a local street or park to

do a survey of the litter and the

findings were staggering. Every

step they took, more and more

litter appeared in front of them.

The children all took action

against this mess and picked up

all the litter they could find,

bringing bags and bags of it back

to school. Sadly, even when we

returned to a place we had

cleaned up the previous day there

was even more litter.

We also had a visit from Neeta, a

volunteer from CleanUpUK, who

informed all the children about

ways in which they can help keep

their community litter free. If

From this week the children have

shared their opinions about the

problems of litter and they all

agree: Littering needs to stop.

Newham L i t t e r Ep i dem i c Leaving the school gates, I trudged sluggishly through the polluted

streets of Newham. Disgusted by the sight, I was uncomfortable

walking in the un-hygienic area. The citizens of Newham have been

causing these problems by fly-tipping which prompts a bad odour.

My eyes began to hurt as an overflowing river of rotten litter sur-

rounded the area. As I continued my journey home, I gazed at a

figure swimming through a pile of rubbish. Guilty of the mess I cre-

ated, the thought was constantly being whispered in my head that I

am harming wild-life, that I am polluting the area and that I am be-

ing a criminal…

It was my responsibility to dispose of this unpleasant debris. I had

to do my part in ensuring that the community is a safe and happy

place to be. Trying to ignore the horrendous smell of rotten trash, I stood motion-less as I examined the area. I pon-

dered over whether I could end this problem by keeping Newham a

litter free area. Knowing that I’ve harmed the community in many

ways, I was ashamed of myself.

The piles of rubbish soon began to produce intoxicating fumes. As a

car cruised beside me, one of the passengers flung a can of coke

through the window. I arrived home and noticed a crisp packet on the

floor; I picked it up and threw it in the recycling bin. I wanted to

redeem myself by starting to not litter. I am no longer the culprit of

this mess.
