Clarens is part of the scenic Highlands Route and is
surrounded by mountainous splendour. The Rooiberge is the
range encompassing the village, while the mighty Maluti's
stand proud in shades of purple and blue further to the south-
east. All around the sandstone cliffs, with their multi-coloured
layers, is a horizontal strata, a unique geological feature of the
area and known as the Clarens formation. Many homes in the
Clarens Valley are built with Clarens Sandstone.
The village has become aptly labelled the "Jewel of the Free
State" - rich in beauty, with an aura of peace and tranquillity.
During Autumn, the magnificent autumnal shades of the Lom-
bard Poplars attract artists, photographers and nature lovers

The Maluti route, as the Eastern Free State is sometimes
referred to, also boasts a multitude of festivals throughout the
year. The annual Cherry Festival in Ficksburg; the "Bielie
Mielie" festival in Reitz; the Wheat Festival in Bethlehem; the
Roof of Africa Rally; the SA Skiing Championships; Sondella
Cultural Youth Festival and the Morija Arts and Cultural
Festival, are but a few.

BRIDGE CLUB
The Bridge Club is a popular Club whose members meet every
week. The number of members of this Club has grown steadily
and currently stands at well over twenty. The Club has been in
operation for the last ten years and meets every Thursday
evening from 18:45 until 22:00 at the Clubhouse.
FISHING CLUB
The Fishing Club has developed into a vibrant and dynamic
Club. Only Club members may fish in the designated lakes and
dams in the Estate. The dams in Silver Lakes are mainly
stocked with bass, bream, carp and barbell. All fish caught
must be released. Should you wish to join the Fishing Club,
application forms are available from the HOA office. A minimal
annual fee is payable. Various exciting events are organised by
the Club throughout the year including competitions and
weekends away.
RECYCING PROGRAMME - "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle"
Silver Lakes has a successful recycling programme that has
been running for several years. Items collected include waste
paper, glass bottles, tins, flattened boxes and plastic. Recy-
cling is collected every second Monday morning.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY COMMITTEE
A portion of the monthly levy paid to the HOA by homeowners
is allocated on a regular basis by the Social Responsibility
Committee to local charities and needy causes.
