2.

Everything we know about dinosaurs comes from their fossils. Fossils are the remains or tracesdead plants and animals from millions of years a

of

go. We find fossils in stone buried millions of years ago.

4.

Some scientists say there are still many dinosaurs alive today. Many plants and animals alive today were also alive when the dinosaurs roamed this earth.

6.

Animals without backbones formed the oldest known fossils. They are much like the jellyfish, sponges, and snails that live around us today.

8.

The earliest fossils of fish look very much like Lampreys. They had small mouths with no jaws. They also had gills for breathing.

10.

The first land animals were amphibians that looked very much like our modern day frogs, toads, and salamanders. They could live in water and on land.

12.

Some of these early amphibians probably evolved or slowly turned into reptiles. Tortoises and lizards shared the earth with the earliest dinosaurs.

14.

About 200 million years ago, the earliest crocodiles were born. They belonged to a group of dinosaurs called archosaurs, which means "ruling reptiles".

16.

Many scientists think that birds are really dinosaurs. The skeleton of a bird looks like that of an ancient dinosaur. Fossils were found that directly link a modern bird to a dinosaur.

18.

The Hoatzin bird in South America looks like a bird that lived millions of years ago. For the first months of its life it has dinosaur claws. As it grows the claws disappear.

20.

Scientists like to call these earliest animals living fossils. These animals give scientists the chance to study the bodies and habits of animals that are very much like animals of dinosaur times.
