Success Criteria

I can show the reader not tell the reader.

I can up-level my vocabulary to make my writing sound better

I can use the senses to describe a scene.

Starter – sentence types

• List the 4 sentence types we learnt last lesson.

• Can you define what each of them are and how to spot them?

Label the sentences correctly

1. Stop that now.

2. I am going to the park.

3. Can I have a drink?

4. What an amazing piece of work!

5. Do not enter.

6. Where are you going?

7. My favourite food is pizza.

Don’t tell me the weather, show me!

It is a hot day =

Perspiration was rolling down my back and my hair was damp with

sweat. The sun made the ground as hot as burning coals.

The evening sky was as purple as a bruise. Stormy clouds were lit up with a flash of lightening as thunder roared.

Snowflakes danced around her like twirling ballerinas. Only half an hour ago she had been snug and cosy in her bed. Now she was so cold that she could not even feel her toes as she squelched through the thick white blanket.

His wet hair fell into his eyes as he ran through the pelting rain. Water splashed up his trousers as he dodged the puddles on his way home from school.

• Whilst I read this paragraph out to you, look for all of the ways the writer has shown the reader, rather than told the reader.

Think about:

• The setting

• Character description

• The senses

• How is suspense and tension created?

• To show the reader, rather than tell the reader, we need to use all of our senses. This helps the reader to imagine exactly what is happening and picture this in their minds.
