Location-Based Social Networking

Location-based social networks are social networks that use GPS features to locate you and that let you broadcast your location and other content from your mobile device.

• Created in 2009 by Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai

• As of December 2010, there are over 5 million registered users.

• NO GPS locator • Receive badges for

doing stuff, with custom ones for businesses

• Compete for mayorships for venues

• Many businesses offer perks for mayors and frequent patrons

• GPS locator• Receive pins for

accomplishing stuff, and items you can drop/pick up

• Top 10 list of users per venues

• Perks offered during the holiday season

Check in to 5 different Starbucks locations

Including the words “Red Cross” or “Blood donation” in your shout-outs

Checking into over 10 different locations within a 12-hour period

Doug Wheeler unlocked the NASA Explorer Badge when he checked in from the International Space Station.
