4.4 Interface Selection
e printer has 2 interfaces; the parallel interface and Type-B optional interface. These
erfaces are selected manually by Default Setting or selected automatically.
Manual SelectionOne of 2 interfaces can be selected by Default Setting.
Automatic SelectionThe automatic interface selection is enabled by Default Setting. In this automatic
interface selection mode, the printer is initialized to the idle state scanning which
interface receives data when it is powered on. Then the interface that receives data
first is selected. When the host stops data transfer and the printer is in stand-by
state for the seconds specified by Default Setting, the printer is returned to the idle
state. As long as the host sends data or the printer interface is in busy state, the
selected interface is let as it is.
Interface State and Interface SelectionWhen the parallel interface is not selected, the interface gets into a busy state. When the Type-B serial interface card is installed and it is not selected, the
interface sends XOFF and sets the DTR signal MARK. When the optional interface is not selected, the printer sets “OFFLINE” bit of MNSTS register to the
optional interface. When the printer is initialized or returned to the idle state, the parallel interface got into a ready state, the serial interface sends XON and sets the DTR SPACE and the
printer resets “OFFLINE” bit of MNSTS register to the optional interface. Caution
that the interrupt signal such as a -INIT signal on the parallel interface is not effective while that interface is not selected.
4.5 Prevention Hosts from Data Transfer Time-out
nerally, hosts abandons data transfer to peripherals when a peripheral is in busy state for zens of seconds continuously. To prevent hosts from this kind of time-out, the printer eives data very slowly, several bytes per minute, even if the printer is in busy state. This
wdown is started when the rest of the input buffer becomes several hundreds of bytes. At t, when the input buffer is full, the printer is in busy state continuously.
4.6 IEEE1284.4 protocol
e packet protocol described by IEEE1284.4 is supported on the parallel I/F.o function modes of IEEE1284.4 protocol, “Off” and “Auto” are available, and one of m is selected according to the value of Default setting. (See 1.5.2.3 "Default Setting")

2 Printer Mechanism
is printer mechanism consists of Printhead, Paper feed mechanism, Carriage movement chanism, Tractor feed mechanism, Platen gap adjustment mechanism, Ribbon feed
chanism, PF motor, CR motor, detectors, and so on.
2.1 Printhead
e printhead prints data from the control board on paper using the ink ribbon. The
nthead is mounted on the carriage unit.
2.2 Paper Feed Mechanism
e paper feed mechanism picks up paper and transports it to the printhead, then ejects it p by step or continuously driven by the PF motor. PF motor drives the paper feed
chanism gears and the platen roller. The top of form and paper out condition are detected
front and rear PE detector, respectively.
2.3 Carriage Movement Mechanism
e carriage movement mechanism carries the carriage unit left and right along the CR
ide shaft and mechanism frame and stops it at any position for printing. It is driven by the
que sent from the CR motor via the timing belt. Home position is detected by the HP
me position) detector at power on and CR motor phase changing timing.
2.4 Tractor Feed Mechanism
e tractor feed mechanism feeds continuous paper to the printhead and ejects it. The
que from the PF motor is transferred to the tractor unit via the release mechanism in the
per feed mechanism. The release mechanism switches the PF motor torque between cut eet feeding and continuous paper feeding by the release lever. This printer is equipped
th several tractor feeding methods (front / rear push tractor feeding, front / rear push &
ll tractor feeding and front / rear pull tractor feeding), which is selected according to the
ctor unit setting positions and the lever positions. The tractor detector detects the release
er setting position in cut sheet feeding or continuous paper feeding.

3.1 C293PSB/PSE Power Supply Circuit
is printer can be powered by either of two power supply boards: the C293PSB (120V) ard or the C293PSE (230V) board. The function of these two boards is the same, except a difference in the primary circuitry. The power supply outputs the DC current cessary to drive the printer control circuit and drive the mechanism. The input voltages
d fuse ratings for these boards are as shown in the following table:
e power supply circuit outputs voltages used to drive the various control circuits and the
chanism, as shown in the following table:
e power supply circuit consists of the line filter circuit, ZC-RCC (Zero-Cross Ringing
oke Converter) switching circuit and 5V chopper regulator IC. The AC voltage is first ut to the line filter circuit for higher harmonics absorption, then input to the switching
cuit and transformed to +35VDC. +5VDC is generated from +DC35V by the regulator . The over current / voltage protection circuit is also designed on the board.
e power switch is set in the secondary circuit that is controlled by the signal PSC from
control panel.

Before disassembling, assembling or adjusting the printer,
disconnect the power supply cable from the AC power socket. Failure to do cause personal injury.
Be careful with the printhead when you handle it, as it may be
very hot just after printing. Do not touch the heat sink attached to the switching FET (Q1) on
the power supply board, just after power off as it may be very
hot. Never touch the heat sink attaches to the switching FET (Q1)
while at AC power cable is connected to the AC outlet, as it is not electrically isolated.
To maintain efficient printer operation: Use only the recommended tools for maintenance work. Use only the recommended lubrications and adhesives. Adjust the printer only in the manner described in this

eventive maintenance is important to keep the printer in the best condition and to prevent ubles in advance. Use the denatured alcohol to clean the exterior case and use the
cuum cleaner if necessary, to remove dust and paper debris in the printer inside.
e influence that oil and grease give is great especially in low temperature. erefore, EPSON has been tested and analyzed various oil and grease exten-ely and chooses the best one for that print.
NOTE: Lubrication must be applie
Disconnect the printer from the AC socket before performing
maintenance.
Do not use thinner, trichloroethylene, or ketone-based solvents
on the plastic components of the printer. Never use the oil and grease other than those specified in this
manual. Use of different type of lubrication can damage the
printer and the components.
