What on Earth Could Justify Another Attempt at Educational Metadata?

LRMI, #cetis14, 17-18 June 2014

A. The world needs more educational metadata standards.

B. We love educational metadata.C. We are gluttons for punishment.D. All of the above.

How much does Cetis love educational metadata standards?

This much….

LRMI, #cetis14, 17-18 June 2014

First there was…the LOM

Learning Object

Metadata

LRMI, #cetis14, 17-18 June 2014

First the was…the LOM

Learning Object

Metadata

LRMI, #cetis14, 17-18 June 2014

First came … FAILTE Metadata Guidelines

• 2001.• Facilitating Access to Information on Learning

Technology for Engineers.• JISC DNER project.• EEVL, EASIT-Eng, LTSN-Eng, (not Cetis).• Jenny Slater, Loughborough University and

Phil Barker, Heriot Watt University.• Based on Dublin Core and IMS Meta-Data.

LRMI, #cetis14, 17-18 June 2014

Then came … RLLOMAP

• 2003.• RDN / LTSN LOM Application Profile.• Andy Powell, UKOLN and Phil Barker, Heriot

Watt University.• IEEE LOM.

LRMI, #cetis14, 17-18 June 2014

Meanwhile… the UK Common Metadata Framework

• JISC eXchange for Learning (X4L) Programme metadata profile.• Developed in 2003.• Lorna M. Campbell, CETIS and Gerry

Graham, Learning and Teaching Scotland.• Based on IMS Meta-data.

LRMI, #cetis14, 17-18 June 2014

Which morphed into…UK LOM Core

• 2003.• UK Learning Object Metadata Core.• By Lorna M. Campbell, and Phil Barker,

CETIS and Gerry Graham, Learning and Teaching Scotland.• Based on IEEE LOM / IMS Meta-data.

At the same time…IMS LRM

• 2002 - 2006.• IMS Learning Resource Meta-data. • Best Practice Guide by Lorna M.

Campbell and Phil Barker, CETIS and many others.• Bindings and best practice for IEEE LOM.

LRMI, #cetis14, 17-18 June 2014

Copyright © 2006 IMS Global Learning Consortium, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Not forgetting…DC-Ed

• 2006 - 2011.• Dublin Core Education Application

Profile Task Group.• Focused on defining resource classes

and domain model.• Also worked in collaboration with IEEE

LTSC

LRMI, #cetis14, 17-18 June 2014

A brief flirtation…ISO MLR

• 2008 - 2009.• ISO Metadata for Learning Resources.

LRMI, #cetis14, 17-18 June 2014

Which brings us back to…LRMI

• 2011 - 2014.• Learning Resource Metadata Initiative.

LRMI, #cetis14, 17-18 June 2014

What is LRMI?

• Learning Resource Metadata Initiative.• Co-led by Creative Commons and the

Association of Education Publishers (AEP).• Funded by Bill and Melinda Gates

Foundation.• Currently in third and final phase of

funding.LRMI, #cetis14, 17-18 June 2014

How did Cetis get involved with LRMI?

• 2011 - Phil Barker responded to the open call to join the Technical Working Group in.• 2013 – Cetis and Heriot Watt University

sub-contracted by Creative Commons to manage LRMI.

LRMI, #cetis14, 17-18 June 2014

Why did Cetis get involved with LRMI?• A new and interesting approach to learning

resource metadata. • Open and transparent working processes. • Highly relevant to OER discovery.• Related to work with Learning Registry.• We’re gluttons for punishment.

But what does LRMI do?

LRMI aims to make it easier for teachers and learners to find educational materials through major search engines and specialized resource discovery services.

LRMI, #cetis14, 17-18 June 2014

How does it do that then?

LRMI has extended the schema.org ontology in order to allow the description of educationally important properties of resources to be marked-up in web pages in a manner that is easily understood by search engines.

LRMI, #cetis14, 17-18 June 2014

But what’s schema.org?

Schema.org is a joint initiative by Google, Yahoo, Microsoft Bing, Yandex and W3C that aims to help search engines interpret information on web pages to improve the display of search results, making it easier for people to find the information they are looking for on the web.

So how does LRMI relate to schema.org?

LRMI has added properties to schema.org to describe items of type CreativeWork.

LRMI, #cetis14, 17-18 June 2014

And these properties are?

• educational alignment• educational use• interactivity type• is based on url• learning resource type• time required• typical age range

LRMI, #cetis14, 17-18 June 2014

Now over to Phil for more techy stuff on schema.org and LRMI.

(He really does love metadata you know…)
