President’s Message
Our 16th Annual Convention and Show held in Owego, New York, was a huge
success. The amount and quality of the exhibits in both horticulture and design was
evident as the show received the blue certificate for the Standard Show Achievement
Award. Of course, where would we be without our commercials? Thank you!!! As
always, it was one of the highlights of the show to keep going back and forth to buy
more plants and supplies. So many people are responsible for making such a large
undertaking a success; I can't name them all but I would especially like to
acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our Convention Chairman, Fay
Wagman, and of our Show Chairman, Sue Hoffmann. For those who could not
attend this convention, we hope that you can be with us next year in the Baltimore
area for our next convention.
Congratulations to Marie Burns, and Ken and Susan Barbi, as they have just received
Honorary Life Memberships in MAAVS. They were instrumental in the formation of
our organization, and have dedicated countless hours to the success of MAAVS.

Thank You from Ways and Means
What a great show of support from our commercials, affiliate clubs and individual members for the raffle
auctions and theme baskets at this year’s Joint Convention!!
For the grab bag, we had 26 gift certificates given by our commercial members and enough $1.00 items
donated by members to take in $112.00.
The silent auction had 49 items donated that generated another $625.00. Thank you to Paul Kro ll and B ill
Price who had many cuttings in this auction and to everyone else who contributed items for the bidding.
There were 8 beautiful theme baskets in the Chinese auction donated by affiliate clubs and individuals. The
baskets were judged by the number of tickets that were placed in their corresponding jar. First place winning
basket was the AVS of Syracuse basket and they received $30.00 Second place of $20.00 was won by the
Baltimore AVS for their entry, and $10.00 to Sweetwater AVS as third award. All the baskets were wonderful
and a special thanks to everyone who put them together. The affiliate baskets were won by Vicki Carr, Barbara
Thomas, Jean Tippet, Sue Guenther, Catherine Walbridge and Lou Viera, with 2 baskets won by Francis Via.
The Saturday night auction had many great items including several light stands and took in $951.00 of which
nearly $400.00 was from the Chinese basket raffle. The raffle tickets purchased at the meals could be used at
either raffle. The live auction was a big success bringing in $425.00 . Plants for this auction were donated by
Paul Kroll, Nancy Kast, David Dick, Rodney Barnett, Marie Burns and M argaret Califano. Thank you to each
of you.

All together Ways and Means took in $2,111.00. It
is with much appreciation that we extend our thanks
to everyone who helped make this possible because
of their generous donations and purchases of raffle
tickets and grab bag items.
Also a big thanks to all that helped setting up the
Ways and Means displays and selling tickets at the
meals. Special thanks to Susan Foster and Victoria
Schnurr who worked so tirelessly at our display.
They were always there when called upon. Victoria
has been the youngest member of the team for 2 years
and her help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you, thank you, thank you everyone!
