Macro Photography

Presented by Ferd

Definition

Macro photography is extreme close-up photography, usually of very small subjects, in which the size of the subject in the photograph is greater than life size.

Formal Definition

The technically correct definition would be to take an image at a 1:1 ratio but, in general usage, the term has come to mean any close-up photography.

1:1 means the image on the sensor is the same size as the actual object.

Subjects

● Flowers● Insects● Common objects

Pizza Hut

Hardware

● $$$$ Macro Lens● $-$$ Extension Tubes● $-$$ Close-up Lens● $ Reversing Ring● $-$$$Stacked Lenses● $$ Ring Light● $$ Macro Rails

Macro Lens

● Best choice● Price varies● Usually 1:1● Can be used

for normalphotography

Extension Tubes

● Move lens away from camera body

● Limited light● Electrical

contacts much more expensive

Close-up Lens

● Screws on like a filter

Reversing Ring

● One end mounts to camera

● Reversed lens screws onto other end

Stacked Lenses

● Reversing ring with two sets of threads

● Screws onto zoom lens

● Reversed prime lens screws on other end

Light is the problem

● Extremely shallow depth of field (DOF) requires small aperture

● Extension tubes, close-up lenses, and stacked lenses rob light

Ring Light

● Mounts around lens

● May be continuous ($) or flash ($$$)

Macro Rails

● Allows fine focus adjustments in two directions

Focus Stacking

● Take many pictures, adjusting the focus each time

● Combine all the files into a single image

● Similar to HDR but with different areas in focus

● Name holders

● Colored backdrops
