Mageia1: custom GNOME installation
AbstractHow to install full GNOME from Mageia installation DVD (mageia-dvd-1-i586.iso and mageia-dvd-1-x86_64.iso). Step by step process with some details and suggestions.
Pay attention! Installation CD (mageia-dual-1.iso) doesn't have GNOME.
Installation performes on Virtual Box with single Windows partition.
Default DVD boot option is to install Mageia1.
Next step: Choosing the language
License Agreement: default is Refuse
You have to choose Accept to install Mageia
Partitioning option: Use free space on Microsoft Windows partition
There is free space on Windows partition.
Mageia installer suggests to use 6G for Mageia installation.
Choosing this option creates dual boot system. You can boot either Mageia or Windows operating system. Hard disk drive (HDD) partitioning is automatic.
Partitioning option: Remove Microsoft Windows
Selecting Remove Microsoft Windows will format Windows partition and install Mageia.
There will be only one operating system Mageia OS.

We are doing Custom disk partition.
Partitioning: original HDD stucture
At the beginning, there is only one partition on HDD - sda.
Installer suggestions are on right.

Click on partition displays some details about selected partition.
Click on Resize botton now.

Resize windows shows how much space is in use Minimum size.

Mageia installer suggested 6G for Mageia installation.
We are going to create 61436-55240=6196 MB empty space.

Resizing is important operation. If something goes wrong, you may lose you Windows installation.
This is the last warning before resizing starts.

You need to create swap space, and file system partition.
Partitioning: Create a new partition
By default, Create a new partition starts with ext4 filesystem type.
Click on Filesystem type bar gives you an option to select different filesystem types.

You need to select Linux swap.

Oversymplified rule: you need to create 1G swap if your RAM is less than 1G.
Mageia installer complains if you don't create swap at all. Installation may still be possible.

After creating swap, HDD looks like this.
You need to click on empty space and create file system partition there. Use all avaliable space.

Click on DONE botton writes patitioning table on HDD.
File system partition is formatting.
It's time to start Mageia installation.

Mageia KDE is selected by default.
Installing: choose GNOME
Installing: installation running
1238 packages is installing here. The number may vary depending on computer hardware.
There are numbers of images constantly changing. One of them is on left.

You have to set root password and create a user.
Root and user passwords should be different.
You may check your password strenght online

It's time to install bootloader.

You may choose different monitor.

You can check and reset many parts of your system here.
Bootloader: installed
Botloader is installed on MBR by default.
Mageia is set to boot in 10 second.
You can still boot Windows by selecting it from boot menu.
