Natural Beauty

Are your

cleaning

products

safe?

Cosmetic Chemicals

• Skin: The body`s largest

organ

• Skin absorbs up to 60%

of what goes on

• Children’s bodies

absorb 40-50% more

than adults

• This includes all the

chemicals in our

cosmetics!

Natural Beauty

On average we use 10

personal care products

each day, resulting in

exposure to more than

126 unique chemicals—

not counting the many

undisclosed chemicals in

“fragrance.”

Toxic Chemicals

Health issues linked to chemicals in the body:

• Allergies

• Cancer

• Infertility

• Reproductive problems

• Birth defects

• Learning disabilities

Pop Quiz!

What are some toxic chemicals you may

find in your personal care products?

Chemicals to Avoid

• Sunscreen agents (Oxybenzone, Benzophenone,

Octy-methoxycinnamate)

• Propylene and Butylene Glycol

• Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

• Hydroquinone

• Petroleum/Petrolatum

• Triclosan

• Parabens

• Phlalates

• Talc

Chemicals to Avoid

• Coal Tar (P-PHENYLENEDIAMINE or “C.I.”)

• Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde-Releasing

Preservatives (DMDM Hydantoin, Diazolidinyl

Urea, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Methenamine,

Quaternium-15, and Sodium

Hydroxymethylglycinate)

• Monoethanolamine (MEA), Diethanolamine (DEA),

Triethanolamine (TEA), and Cocamide DEA

• Ethoxylated surfactants and 1,4-dioxane

• Diethanolamine

• Lead

• Mercury

• Toluene

• Siloxanes

• BHA/BHT

• Mineral Oil

• Ethoxylated surfactants and 1,4-dioxane

• Silicone derived emollients

• Paraphenylenediamine (PPD)

• Polyethylene glycol (PEG)

Chemicals to Avoid

Class of chemicals used as preservatives in a wide

range of beauty products

Common Uses:

• Shampoos

• Moisturizers

• Shaving Creams

• Cleansing Gels

• Personal Lubricants

• Cosmetics

Parabens

Parabens

Risks:

• May interfere with hormone function – associated

with breast cancer since found to mimic estrogen

• Linked to reproductive issues

• May cause skin irritation and allergies

Look for words ending in paraben, as well as 4-

hydroxybenzoic acid, propyl ester, propyl-4-

hydroxybenzoate, benzoic acid, and 4-hydroxybutyl

ester

Phlalates

Common Uses:

• Nail Polishs

• Cosmetics

• Deodorants

• Lotions

Plasticizers used in many plastic products as well

as beauty products

Hidden within fragrances, perfumes, parfums and

perfumed products

Phlalates

Risks:

• May interfere with hormone function – linked

with early puberty in girls and boys, low sperm

count, and breast cancer

• Linked to birth defects

• May cause liver, kidney or lunge damage

Avoid any products with Fragrance, Perfume and

Parfum listed in the ingredients

Petroleum

A mineral oil jelly (i.e. petroleum jelly), which is

used as a barrier to lock moisture in the skin

Many petroleum by-products are used

Common Uses:

• Moisturizers

• Hair Care Products

• Lip Balm/Lipstick

Petroleum

Risks:

• Can be contaminated with cancer-causing

polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)

• Can interfere with the skin’s natural functions

• May cause skin irritation and allergies

Mineral oil and petroleum distillates, such as

Petrolatum, are related petroleum by-products,

which can also be contaminated with PAHs

A chemical additive that’s used in foaming products

Common Uses:

• Body Washes

• Face washes

• Soaps

• Bubble Baths

• Toothpastes

Sodium Laureth/Lauryl Sulfate (SLS/SLES)

Sodium Laureth/Lauryl Sulfate (SLS/SLES)

Risks:

• May cause cancer; contaminated with 1,4-diozane

• Can damage the immune function

• Irritates skin, eyes, and respiratory tract

• Harmful to fish and other wildlife

Watch for SLS/SLES or sodium dodecyl sulfate,

PEG (1,4) lauryl ether sulfate, sodium salt, sulfuric

acid, monododecyl ester, sodium PEG lauryl ether

sulfate and sodium dodecyl sulfate

Triclosan

Common Uses:

• Antibacterial products –

hand sanitizers, soaps

• Deodorants and

Antiperspirants

• Toothpastes

• Cleansers

Used as a preservative and antibacterial agent

Triclosan

Risks:

• May interfere with hormone function

• Linked to cancer

• May cause irritation to the skin and eyes

• Harmful to fish and other wildlife

Avoid all antibacterial products, and watch out for

the name brand Microban

Deodorant Over Antiperspirants

• Almost all antiperspirants

contain Aluminum

• Although more studies are

needed, there is some concern

that this exposure may

increase breast cancer and

Alzheimer’s disease

• Look for deodorants (not

antiperspirants) with no

aluminum or parabens to be

safe

Fragrances

• There is a loophole that allows

many chemicals to be listed

under the term “fragrance”

• Many of these unlisted

ingredients are irritants and

can trigger allergies,

migraines, asthma and

hormone dysfunction

• Look for essential oils or

“fragrance-free” products

Canadian Regulations

All cosmetics sold in Canada must contain the list of

ingredients on the label using the International

Nomenclature for Cosmetic Ingredients system

Health Canada created a “Hotlist”, which includes

prohibited and restricted cosmetic ingredients

Cosmetic manufactures are required to register their

products and disclose a list of ingredients and the

concentration of each ingredient used

But Wait!

If a cosmetic contains an ingredient which appears

on the Hotlist, the manufacturer may be advised to:

• Remove the ingredient from the formulation;

• Reduce the concentration of the ingredient to an acceptable level;

• Consider marketing the product as a non-prescription drug or

natural health product, with appropriate claims and application for a

Drug Identification Number (DIN) or Natural Product Number

(NPN);

• Provide evidence that the product is safe for its intended use;

• Confirm that the product is labelled as required;

• Confirm that the product is sold in a child-resistant package

Inadequacy in Restrictions Example

Formaldehyde is a restricted ingredient for using in

cosmetics in Canada

It cannot be added in concentrations greater than

0.2% in most products

However, there is no restriction on the use of

ingredients which off-gas formaldehyde!

Yikes!!!!!

What do we do?
