5Telecom Maintenance:
Every system has to be maintenance after installation for continuous operation so as Telecom .
Different types of telecom medium GSM,CDMA,PSTN/ADSL, IP-Telephony need maintenance.
This case study covers the maintenance on Base
Transceiver Station (BTS) on GSM Network.

6Maintenance Type Implemented:
Third generation of maintenance deployed by using software systems for analysis and notify the status of the equipment’s.
Software base equipment status updating system is implemented, NTC existing ZTE system has NETNUMEN(TM) software which updates each update of the BTS and its equipment.
Software categorized the failure status on the equipment , critical , major and minor notification by color coding and alarming is done to engineer.
GMSC sends a ticket SMS to BTS-specified engineer about the failure of the BTS its location, type and maintenance time.
Software based system used failure maintenance and some time breakdown maintenance is implemented on telecom.
After the condition happened resources for maintenance is deployed to site. This is the major maintenance work on NTC.

7Cont.… Cost of maintenance can’t be calculated in initial phase but after
getting fault cause by the maintenance team in site they conclude the approximate cost and change of spare component is initialized.
Fault occurred component is bring back to TTC and Some chip level maintenance is done and repaired for next installation.
Exact maintenance pattern prediction and analysis is difficult from some case studies so exact analysis need long time case studies on the same system.
Some systems and component failed after the installation and some run smoothly for long duration(5-10 years).

9Maintenance Management: GMSC notify the engineer with failure status and information on
mobile phone by SMS . Which is condition based maintenance.
As failure message information human resource will deployed , if Fault on Transmission, radio, antenna and major component happen engineer will deployed else power person and helper will deployed.
Major components spare parts are on stock and all the necessary tools are also in ready mode.
For maintenance administration the O&M Department is separate on operation.
Scheduling and resource allocation is done by O&M department on the basis of site location , condition, user constraints.
All necessary budgeting is handled by Account section of O&M.

Huawei get the contract of installation of next generation network(NGN) and maintenance works for 5 years. So the maintenance will performed on NGN with new system architecture and strategy will implemented

12Discussion and conclusion: Maintenance on the telecom has to be done with respect to the
equipment conditions, failure rate and maintenance history, so some of the equipment need condition based maintenance.
Some critical failure system has to maintain with breakdown maintenance strategy, some major parts has to be replaced and some repaired.
Major alarm and minor alarm also be analyzed frequently and preventive actions has to be done so that critical failure would minimized.
A software system can be developed and deploy on the O&M system so that it can extract all the information from the BSC about the maintenance occurred at past and present condition , so that the maintenance patterns can be predicted. The predictive maintenance will enhance the maintenance system and process more manageably and more economically with optimization on the resources can be done.
