Is this a Problem or opportunity?

• Americans are becoming less healthy.!

• Americans are becoming less active.

Why this matters• Childhood obesity has more than doubled in

children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years.!

• The percentage of children aged 6–11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2010. Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12–19 years who were obese increased from 5% to 18% over the same period

Why This Matters

• In 2010, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese.!

• Overweight and obesity are the result of “caloric imbalance”—too few calories expended for the amount of calories consumed—and are affected by various genetic, behavioral, and environmental factors.

• Only one in three children are physically active every day.!

• Children now spend more than seven and a half hours a day in front of a screen (e.g., TV, video games, computer).!

• Only about one in five homes have parks within a half-mile, and about the same number have a fitness or recreation center within that distance.!

• Americans eat less than the recommended amounts of vegetables, fruits, whole-grains, dairy products, and oils.!

• Once upon a time, exercise was a normal part of every child’s life—long walks to and from school, daily physical education classes (or recess), and neighborhood games of tag and dodgeball kept young bodies healthy and strong.

OR AN OPPORTUNITY?

IS THIS A PROBLEM

Get The Kids Up and MOVING

• THE BEST EXERCISE IS THE ONE THEY WILL DO!

Get The Kids Up and MOVING

• We need to find what they want.!

• Start where they are and work toward the ideal. !

• Small victories and improvements.!

• THE BEST EXERCISE IS THE ONE THEY WILL DO!

The Answer

What is General Fitness?

• General fitness is all to do with your mental and physical health. It can be from what sports you participate in to which foods you eat.!

!

• Physical fitness is a general state of good physical health.

When children play, they’re exercising – and having a great time

• We can not expect kids to run on a treadmill. !

• Keep it fun. !

• Give the kids time to come up with their own rules.

• SPIDERS & SCORPIONS.!

CHOOSE 4 CHILDREN TO BE THE SCORPIONS. THERE JOB IS TO MOVE AROUND ON ALL FOURS (BELLY FACING DOWN) TRYING TO STING AS MANY OF THE OTHER CHILDREN AS POSSIBLE. THE OTHER CHILDREN ARE SPIDERS, THEY HAVE TO MOVE AROUND ON ALL FOURS (BELLY FACING UP.) IF A ‘SPIDER’ IS STUNG IT MUST HOLD EITHER ONE ARM OR ONE FOOT UP IN THE AIR (3 POINT BALANCE) UNTIL ALL OF THE SPIDERS ARE STUNG OR TIMES RUNS OUT.!

A VARIATION TO THE GAME CAN INCLUDE SPECIAL SPIDERS WHO CAN DELIVER AN ANTIDOTE AND RELEASE THE STUNG SPIDERS.!
