What is FMC?

FMC implementation to date

Fixed Mobile Convergence– Combines wireless and wireline services– Allows for seamless subscriber roaming between

wireline and wireless access – Methods to provide FMC

• UMA• VCC• Femtocell• IMS

UMA

UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) - The UMA standard defines a new core network element (the UMA Network Controller (UNC)) and associated protocols that provide for the secure transport of mobile signaling and user plane traffic over IP.

VCC

VCC (Voice call Continuity) - 3GPP defined specifications in order to describe how a voice call can be persisted, as a mobile phone moves between circuit switched and packet switched radio domains (3GPP TS 23.206). VCC is a SIP-centric approach to FMC.

Femtocells

Femtocells - small cellular base station designed for use in residential or small business environments. Femtocell-based deployment will work with existing handsets. It increases both capacity and coverage while reducing both capex and opex. Base Stations typically rely on the Internet for connectivity

IMS

IMS - IP based architecture based on IETF based protocols – SIP, Diameter, HTTP... It is not intended to standardize applications itself but to aid the access of multimedia and voice applications across wireless and wireline terminals

ARPU

Telco

• IPTV• Bundle packages with Mobile

• High Speed Data Services• Video• FMC

• SDV – 10,000• Bundle Mobile• VoIP

• Android• MMOG’s• Social Networking

Offer High Value services Provide Service quality to reduce Churn Avoid becoming a pipe Increase ARPU by providing more services Move away from dumb provider model to vertically integrated multimedia service providers

• Provide services that provide more user for more targeted ads• Network is black boxed and is not a dependency

Where do the 2010+ revenues come from?

Bandwidth to subscribers $/bit for static location (home, business) $/bit for mobile locations (multiple devices)

Delivery of (on-net or off-net) Content/Applications/Services to subscribers

$/service: ie voice, Internet, TV, VoD, targeted TV $/transaction: ie pizza, advertising

Creation of Content/Application/Service $/use: ie movies, on-line software

Provider Checkpoints

Making the network Convergent Targeting the cost: 100x traffic @ Lowest Total Cost of

Ownership (TCO) Creating an Ecosystem Capturing the Internet Opportunity Enabling services anywhere

Notes – $500 Billion investment will be made over the next 3-5 years– Little or no growth in ARPU– Biggest issue is lowering TCO

SDP/SOA requirements

Bringing user services to market quickly– common components according to business processes and feature

rules.

Differentiated user services that leverage a customer’s investments– Leveraging a customer’s “digital experience” for new services

Blended user services– applications that belong to different organizations within the service

provider (e.g., Telecom and Wireless); – applications that span organizations inside and outside the company

(e.g., position from Wireless and maps from the Web); – applications and capabilities that are strictly outside the company (e.g.,

content providers, personal content) – applications and capabilities that reside in the customer domain (e.g.,

services downloaded to a set top box, presence from an enterprise).

Summary

Have to have a path to integrate into SDP– Make sure Architecture is ready

• All major standards bodies are looking to TMF for the interfaces• Does the solution have a portal/Dashboard capabilities?

– You have to ask the following questions• How does this help lower the Total Cost of Ownership?• Does This provide Revenue assurance?

Key of Monitoring and Testing– Active – Synthetic Service transactions– Passive

• Media• Signaling

– Home/Office Management – TR-069 and other standards– Customer and 3rd party facing points
