MANN+HUMMEL Centrifugal Oil Cleaners High Performance Bypass Oil Filtration
MANN+HUMMEL centrifugesclean oil by generating centri-fugal force 2,000 times grea-ter than gravity. It is this forcethat separates solid conta-minant from the oil. This tech-nology has been proven toremove contaminant down toa sub-micron size, which isadvantageous to both engine producers and users:
The Benefits:• Cleaner oil• Extension of oil life• Lengthens service intervals• Reduces engine wear• Enhances long-term pre-
ventative maintenance• Reduces maintenance costs • Cuts waste disposal costs• Reduces application down
time• Maximises in-service time
for vehicle/engines/machine• Reduces total cost of
ownership• Helps ensure clean com-
bustion and fuel efficiency• Supports engine technolo-
gy for the reduction ofexhaust emissions (e.g.exhaust gas recirculation)
• Fast return on investment
MANN+HUMMEL centrifugaloil cleaners are internationallyrecognised in providingsuperior bypass filtration forthe removal of contaminantfrom the lubricating oil of Die-sel engines. The technologycan also be successfully usedfor gearboxes, hydraulics andother industrial fluids. MANN+HUMMEL provide itscentrifuge technology to thefollowing market sectors:
• Trucks• Buses• Marine• Power Generation• Mining Machinery• Locomotives• Construction• Agriculture• Military• Industrial Fluids

MANN+HUMMEL Centrifugal Oil Cleaners – the ingenious solution for many applications

The Importance of Clean Oil
technologies such as exhaustgas recirculation have beenshown to increase the levelof contaminant, especiallysoot in the lubricating oil.The net effect is modern oilsare being required to workharder, last longer and con-tain higher levels of contami-nation. Therefore, advancesin oil chemistry and filtrationtechnology are essential tomeet these needs.
Oil is the life-blood of theengine and clean oil isessential if an engine is tooperate efficiently throughoutits working life. In responseto environmental legislationand customer requirementsengine manufacturers areadapting their designs toreduce harmful exhaustemissions and at the sametime extend oil drain inter-vals. Heavy durability engine test – oil analysis results displaying contaminant in-crease with engine operationhours. Engine size 8 litre,250 kW Industrial Diesel. The result concluded that theMANN+HUMMEL centrifugecontrolled total contaminationlevels within the lube oil at alevel below the engine ma-nufacturers condemnationlimit for more than double the standard drain interval.
Soot particles are sub-micronin size. Soot is a hard pro-wear particle. High sootlevels within a lubricating oil have been shown to beresponsible for acceleratedwear of critical engine com-ponents. Traditional full flowand by-pass filters are unableto remove soot contaminantas it is too small to be captu-red by the media. MANN+HUMMEL bypasscentrifugal oil cleaners areproven to be effective atremoving soot.

Full flow filters are designedto process all the oil used tolubricate the moving parts ofthe engine. However, theneed to maintain a high flowand limit pressure dropacross the filtration mediarestricts the ability to filter out sub-micron particles. This job is taken over by thecentrifugal oil cleaner in thebypass. The MANN+HUMMELcentrifugal oil cleaner proces-ses approximately 10 % ofthe oil flow provided by theengine pump before returningit directly to the engine sump.
Centrifugal Oil Cleaners – Principle of operation
Working principle
Oil is pumped into the centri-fuge at engine pressure anddirected into a hollow spindlewhere it exits via a cross drilling into the centrifugerotor. The rotor becomes fullof pressured oil that is thenallowed to exit through twotangentially opposed nozzlesin the rotor base. This causesrotation of the free spinningrotor assembly thus genera-
ting the centrifugal force within the rotor. As contami-nant particles enter the rotorthey are subjected to a cen-trifugal force causing them tomigrate radially outwards tothe inner surface of the rotorwall where, over time theycompact to form a densecake. MANN+HUMMEL offerboth cleanable and disposa-ble rotor designs.

The removal of particles bycentrifugal force is based on their relative density andtherefore there is no restric-tion on contaminant size.

MANN+HUMMEL cleanableand disposable metal centri-fuges contain patentedSwept Rib Technology in therotor cover. These ribs areused to displace the conta-minated fluid from the rotorcore to the outer edge wherethe contaminants are actedupon by higher centrifugalforces, hence aiding cleaningefficiency. Competitor centri-fuges use inserts inside ofthe rotor in an attempt toachieve the same result.
Centrifugal Oil Cleaners – Principle of operation
Extensive comparativetesting of various insert de-signs has shown there to beno noticeable advances incleaning efficiency for theremoval of sub-micron sootcoupled with a greatly redu-ced contaminant holdingcapacity.
MANN+HUMMEL Swept Rib Technology
MANN+HUMMEL were thefirst to introduce to market acentrifugal oil cleaner with a100 % metal free rotor. TheMANN+HUMMEL plasticrotor is fully combustible andcan be incinerated at dis-posal. This design containspatented Internal rib techno-logy throughout its completelength. Internal rib plasticrotors ensure that all of theoil and hence the contami-nant is rotating at the samespeed as the rotor. As withthe swept rib design, internalrib technology also helps displace the oil and contami-nant from the rotor core tothe outer edge. These twoeffects provide an even greater cleaning efficiencywithout compromising conta-minant holding capacity.

The centrifuge should bemounted at an angle of nomore than 15 degrees fromthe vertical. Temporaryincreases in tilt angle due to vehicle operation are notimportant. For OEM applicati-ons where tilt performance isessential MANN+HUMMELwill design the centrifugearrangement to meet therequired specification.
A MANN+HUMMEL centrifu-ge can be designed onto anengine as original equipmentor retrofitted to an existingengine by the end user. Theby-pass centrifuge requires asupply of pressurised oil. Inthe majority of applicationsthe oil supply is obtained atengine pressure via the lubeoil pump. In cases where oilpressure is insufficient aslave pump can be installed.
Installation
capacity to support a bypasswith a correctly sized centrifu-gal oil cleaner. Please consultwith MANN+HUMMEL or yourlocal distributor for centrifugeselection and installationadvice.
For retrofit applications wheredirect engine mounting of thecentrifuge is difficult,MANN+HUMMEL offer remo-tely mounted designs whichuse air pressure to assist the clean oil to return to thesump. This option is suitableonly for applications where asupply of compressed air isavailable.
Oil leaving the centrifugeneeds to be able to fall backto the engine’s oil sumpunder gravity. It is thereforeimportant that the drain isfree from restrictions and thatthe return is of the correctdiameter and above the oillevel within the sump. When specifying a centrifugefor an application it is vital toensure the oil system cansupport the extra flow takenby the centrifuge in bypass, in order not to starve the fullflow lubrication of enginecomponents. In the majorityof cases engine oil pumpshave sufficient excess oil
Installation
Large diameter oil return pipemeans the oil will drain andthe rotor will be free to turn
A centrifuge is not a normal filter, it needs a larger oil return pipe.
Note: Some models areavailable with air assisted drains to allow them to beinstalled without the need for a large diameter oil returnpipe.

Control MechanismLCB – FM090-LCB can be mounted inalmost any location and uses hoses andfittings common to other by-pass filters.A simple control mechanism in the basemaintains exactly the right oil level formaximum speed and dirt removal. The control operates on air from thetruck systems and air consumption is so small (0.01 l/s STP) as to be hardlymeasurable. When the oil begins to rise, the floatvalve admits a small amount of air tocontrol the oil level. As the level drops, the air is cut off to prevent bubbles fromentering the drain line. Clean oil fromFM090-LCB then returns to the enginecrankcase.
13
InstallationHow to fit a 090-LCB centrifuge
Locating and MountingThe centrifuge should be fitted verticallyABOVE SUMP LEVEL to a rigid part ofthe chassis and as close to the engineand a convenient auxiliary air protectionvalve as possible, to minimise pipe runs.
Air Feed (Connection 1/4” NPT)Air feed to the centrifuge should betaken from the auxiliary air protectionvalve 6 mm O/D nylon tube.Note:• The air pressure to the centrifuge
should not exceed 125 psi• Codes of practice state
Auxiliary Air PressureOperated EquipmentAuxiliary equipment shall not be connectedto an air brake system, except through adevice which protects the service andsecondary brake system, at a pressure ofnot less than 70% of the design pressurecorresponding to a declaration of 0.6 g.
Oil Feed (Connection 1/2” NPT)Oil feed should be taken from a suitablepoint on the engine that results inmaximum oil pressure to the centrifuge. This is usually from the full flow filterhead at a point between the oil pumpand the element filter, using FC300-8Aeroquip type hose.
Oil Drain (Connection 1/2” NPT)Oil drain from the base of the mountingbracket is via an Aeroquip type FC300-8hose, returning to a suitable point in theengine block or oil sump. This return linecan enter above or below the sump level, but must not have a vertical rise fromcentrifuge to oil return point greater than1/2 metre.Note:• The centrifuge must be mounted
above sump level.
GeneralAll hose connections should be madewith the appropriate Aeroquip type highpressure hose fittings. Ensure that the centrifuge is mountedrigidly to the chassis and all pipes arefixed into position and are not likely toscuff against moving parts. Whenconnection is complete, start engine andcheck for oil or air leaks. Check engineoil pressure. Switch off engine and theaudible sound of the rotor will be heardslowing down, thus ensuring that oil isreaching the centrifuge and it is workingeffectively.
Simple Operation – Dependable ServiceThe FM090-LCB centrifugal oil cleanerconsists of two major sections: the centrifuge and a control mechanism.
CentrifugeRotor – At the top is the dirt removingrotor with its removable bowl. Dirty oilfrom the engine enters the side of theFM090-LCB housing and travels upthrough the hollow spindle to the rotor, where it is uniformly distributed by abaffle. The rotor is accelerated to a highspeed. The resulting centrifugal forceslings the dirt particles on to the wall ofthe rotor in a compact, easy-to-removemass.Drive Chamber – The clean oil leavesthe rotor through the screen and entersthe drive chamber. The oil is expelledthrough twin jets which spin the rotor atspeeds up to 9,000 rev/min.
