MANY PEOPLE, MANY WAYS OF

LIFE Why do you think most

communities are made up of different groups of people?

CUSTOM A custom is a

way of doing something.

In a community, the people in a group often share the same customs.

CULTURE The customs that

people have are part of their culture.

The culture of a group is made up of things the people share.

They usually speak the same language and believe the same things.

FOUNDERS The people who

start the community are called its founders.

A community begins when a group of people start to live together.

VANCOUVER Vancouver is a

city in Canada, the country to the north of the U.S.

It is a community made up of many groups of people from different parts of the world.

In the 1880s thousands of Chinese workers came to help build the railroads.

SIKHS In 1904 a large

group of Sikhs moved to Vancouver from India to cut trees in the forests.

people celebrate Chinese New Year in February.
