Editors Letter...
Thursday 5th May is the local
election for Parish and Town
councils. Each village the Arrow covers,
has their own Parish Council and each
councillor sits for a minimum 4 year term.
A councillors role is a voluntary one and
the time committed to the role varies on
the village and individual. Anyone who may
be interested in becoming a councillor can
nominate them self. We have more
information in the Arrow this month if you
are interested in this community role.
The New Spar Auckley, is now fully open
for business,. The store is refreshing and
has a huge variety of services,
congratulations to store owners Amarjit
and Sharan Bhdaal.
With regret, we are not able to deliver The
Arrow in Blaxton. I am aware there are
many readers in Blaxton who would like to
receive a copy and I have spoken to
Finningley Post office who have kindly
agreed to store some magazines for
Blaxton residents. The magazine is out just
before 1st of each month. I will keep you
informed on any changes.
The April issue deadline for articles and
adverts is Wednesday 16th March. The
April issue will be distributed on Fri 25th
March. Thank you to everyone who
continually supports the Arrow.
Best wishes

NEWS RELEASE FROM SOUTH YORKSHIRE POLICE
Police in Doncaster would like to raise awareness
with the public of security advice in the home and
urge people to be extra vigilant with their
possessions and valuables.
Whilst domestic burglaries in Doncaster have
reduced by 2.5% compared to this time last year,
Police continue to remind residents that they can
still do more to prevent burglaries.
Ensuring all windows and doors are locked even
when in the home, making sure all alarms are
working and set and keeping valuables, such as
computers and mobile phones, out of view will all
assist in preventing burglaries.
People also tend to leave car keys in visible places
in their home; on tables, windowsills and left in
door locks with their house keys. To a burglar, this
is an ideal opportunity and whether they were
looking for car keys or not, they will take them and
the vehicle, so always ensure keys are also kept
out of view.
Detective Inspector Steve Whittaker from the
Priority Crime Team in Doncaster said: ―South
Yorkshire Police take offences of burglary
extremely seriously and we will do everything we
can to prevent and detect burglaries. We all have
our part to play in reducing offences of burglary
and although burglary is decreasing, we are urging
home owners to be more vigilant to assist in
preventing criminal activity.‖
Free crime reduction advice is available for all
residents from the Bawtry & Tickhill Safer
Neighbourhood Team by contacting 01302
385338. Residents may also be eligible to receive a
free SmartWater kit to mark their property and
should contact Doncaster Council on 01302

modern way to enjoy dance and excercise at the
same time and the music is brilliant! It was
wonderful to see the boys and girls having so much
fun. Ring Kim for further details or pop round on
Tuesday nights and see for yourself what a 'cool'
set of youngsters we have using the Hall facilities.
Simon Cowell watch out - "Branton does have

Our ancient right to walk, cycle
and horse ride on Common
Lane at Auckley is under
threat. If we do not object to the Gating
Order that is proposed we will lose this right. A
new law is required to keep the right to walk but
exclude vehicles and for this we need time for new
legislation to be passed by parliament. If you wish
to keep your right please put your objections in

Auckley Parish Council would like to add
that the sole intention of the Gating Order, raised by local farmers with DMBC,was to prevent fly tipping and other unauthorised activities, and to keep the amenity value of the lane for the benefit of those who like to enjoy a walk. Great fun was had by all at the
opening of the new look Spar
Auckley. Gone is the ―small drab shop‖ and
in its place is a vibrant new spacious store, to rival
the very best that Co-op or Tesco Express can
offer. Entering the store you are greeted with a
range of hot food snacks and a wide choice of hot
beverages including fresh bean to cup coffee of
restaurant quality. The store now also boasts a
range of freshly baked in-store bread as well as a
wider range of fresh meats & produce. ―Our aim
was to give our local community a wider range of
products and services, and with our bigger store I
think we‘ve achieved that‖ says Amarjit Bhdaal, the
store owner. ―We have always aimed to provide
an exceptional customer service, which is why last
year we introduced a free to use cash machine. So,
if anyone has any thoughts on how we can improve
our services even further, then please feel free to
speak to either Sharan or myself‖.
The store was opened by Harry Watkin, the
winner of a colouring competition organised by

primary schools to take part. Mr Magic was also on
hand to entertain kids of all ages, as well as Kate

2011/12 Annual Precept After careful consideration the parish council determined that the annual precept for
2011/12 is unchanged at £24k in view of the current economic climate.
Revisions to the 91 and 391 Bus Services Recently members of the parish council met with councillors in neighbouring villages at
which representatives of SYPTE and First Buses were present. We discussed concerns
regarding late and, in some cases, non arrival of buses. However, with effect from 31
January a revised timetable has been implemented and all parties hope these changes will
lead to an improved service for residents.
Dog Fouling Residents are asked to please keep the parish pavements clean and in particular Kilham
Lane by ensuring any dog fouling is disposed of in the dog litter bins. Anyone witnessing
owners allowing their dogs to foul should let the parish council or Doncaster Council
know (tel. Doncaster 736000), with details of time, date etc. The parish council will
prosecute where appropriate.
Cantley Library We are aware that many residents of the parish use the facilities at Cantley Library.
At our meeting in January we discussed this issue and wrote to the Mayor of Doncaster
expressing concern on the proposed closure. Ultimately it was decided by Doncaster
Council to take Cantley Library and another in the Borough off the list for closure and we
are grateful for this decision.
Detecting Speeding Vehicles
The Safer Neighbourhood Team will be operating the speed detection equipment in and
around the parish particularly on Doncaster Road and Whiphill Top Lane in order to en-
sure the safety of motorists and pedestrians.
Election of Parish Councillors The four year term of office of the current members of the council comes to an end on 5
May 2011. Doncaster Council will be displaying relevant notices in the near future.

New Gym Equipment
After the school building development work over the Summer holiday, our next job was to
look at new gym equipment. We are very lucky to have such a supportive Parent Teacher
Association who organise enjoyable events that also raise additional funds for the school.
The PTA have funded our new gym equipment which has greatly enhanced children‟s
enjoyment of gym lessons.
Healthy Schools Success
We are pleased to share that our school has been awarded the Healthy Schools Award for
the third time. Schools who hold this national award have to re-apply every two years.
External assessors evaluate the school‟s work in supporting children to develop a healthy
lifestyle through PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education), PE, Healthy Eating and
Emotional Health and Well-Being (looking at pupil voice in school through School Council, the
school‟s pastoral care for children etc.)
Football Success
For the recent pyramid schools‟ football tournament we had two teams, Branton Stripes and
Branton Maroons.
In our first match Branton Stripes scored first. The scorer was Adam. In the second half
Branton Stripes got a penalty. Matti scored! That made the score 2-0. In our second match
we drew 0-0. Our third match went to a penalty shoot out, which we lost 2-3. In our last
match Cameron dribbled round the defenders and scored in the bottom left hand corner
with his left foot and made it 2-0. Branton Stripes won the Year 4 Pyramid Football
Tournament! By Ishan and Matti

Eco Friends
Our Eco Friends group, with elected members
from each class, have been meeting since the
Autumn term. They consider how to make our
school green and how to encourage children to be
environmentally aware.
Emily, Becky and Vanessa represented our school
at Doncaster‟s first Eco Pupil Conference at the
Mansion House on 14th February. They led a
brilliant power point presentation on the work
that our Eco friends group has led so far to the
rest of the schools who attended. This was a very
interesting day, with schools sharing good
practice and presentations from local nature reserves etc. so our Eco Friends group now
have even more good ideas for their future projects!
‘Astrosphere Visit’ for Classes 5 and 6
On the 9th February 2011, Steve Ibbotson came with his Astrosphere to talk to Class 5 and
Class 6 about space and the solar system. Steve told us a lot space and our solar system. We
found out about how the solar system was formed, and the order of the planets. Steve
asked us lots of questions, like: how many seconds there are in a year? Can you work it out?
(the answer is at the bottom of the article). We also learned about the stars. When Steve
talked about the stars, he switched off the lights and we could see pictures of the
different star signs and constellations around the dome. Then he took the pictures off and
projected an image of the stars that we can see at night onto the dome! It was just like
looking at the night sky.
Next we saw footage of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, who were the first men to go on
the moon, and found out about people who go on holiday to space. Class 5 and 6 really
enjoyed their time in the Astrosphere.
„The thing I enjoyed the most was looking at the constellations,‟ said Doug in Class 5. Alice
in Class 5 thought that the best
thing was when Steve told us all
about the dwarf planets, whilst
Bethany in Class 6 thought that
watching the video about how the
sun was born was the best part.
Everyone in Class 5 and 6 thought
the Astrosphere was out of this
world, and would like to thank Mr
Ibbotson and the teachers who
arranged it.
Answer: There are 12 seconds in a year (the 2nd January, 2nd February, 2nd March….)!

Indian Dance and Drumming session for Class 4
Two weeks ago we had a gentleman visit Class 4 called Mr
Singh. He came in to teach us some Indian drumming.
First of all he showed us two small drums called Tabla,
they were made out of goat skin. They were from the
classical part of India. There was also a bigger drum
called the Dholl that was very loud!!!
After that we did a dance called the Bangra. We prac-
tised little bits of the dance at a time then we put it all
together. The dance was really good but it was also very
fast and made us all very tired! Mrs Crayton thought we
were very good at it! The dance had a lot of interesting
moves but we liked them. We thought it was really fun.
The dance had some different names like basketball or
turning the taps on.
At the end we were really tired so Mr Singh showed us
some magic; it was great when he did the magic because
it was very very fast. We had a really good morning!!! By Freya and Alice T (Class 4)
The Great Fire of London
Class 2 have been studying The Great Fire of London. Recently we had a visit from Sir Wil-
liam Petty, a friend of Samuel Pepys. He told us all about the fire, how it spread and how it
was extinguished. Class 2 wrote about their day.
“Yesterday a visitor came into our classroom. His name was Sir William Petty. Firstly we
looked at a map and he showed us his house, Samuel Pepys‟ house and lots of different
houses in London. There was a big river called the River Thames. After that he told us how
the fire started. It started in a baker‟s shop in Pudding Lane. When everyone was in bed, a
spark jumped out of the oven and set the house on fire.” By Evie
“The fire started on Sunday 2nd September 1666. People dug holes in their gardens to bury
their precious things and Samuel Pepys buried his navy papers, Parmesan cheese and his best
wine. King Charles helped to put the fire out. They pulled houses down and blew houses up to
leave gaps. In class we made bucket chains to
put the fire out. In the afternoon we mad a
map of the new London for Sir William Petty.”

News from Auckley Junior, Infant and
Nursery School
Spring is fast approaching and
hopefully the warmer days are
getting closer. We have been very
busy with lots of exciting learning
this term.
African Project
At Auckley School we are
initiating „Creative Friday‟s‟ where
children explore the curriculum
and their learning in a challenging,
fun, child-led way. This terms
project is Africa. Year 1 and 2s theme is „The Art of Africa‟; Year 3 and 4s theme is „An
African Road Trip‟ and Year 5 and 6s theme is „Speak Out for Africa‟. The whole school has
linked with an African orphanage in Kenya and are currently developing innovative and
creative ways of raising money to help fund the future development of the orphanage.
Year 1 and 2 – African Jewellery
As part of the African project Year 1 and 2 children decided
that they wanted to explore making African jewellery in order to sell within the community
to help raise funds for the Kenyan orphanage.
Year 2 created some
amazing jewellery with
wire, suede and beads
whilst Year 1s
wonderful jewellery
was made using papier-
mâché. We‟ve never
seen the parents
looking so dazzling
in their new
adornments!
Year 1 and 2 are now
working on African
Tinga-Tinga sculptures
– their creativeness
holds no bounds!

Athletics
Congratulations to our team of Year 5 and 6
athletes who won the indoor athletics
competition for the Hayfield Pyramid. They
went on to compete in the Doncaster Athletics
Championships at the Dome where they came
4th in the whole authority. It is a pleasure to
see so many of our gifted and talented
athletes excelling.
Doncaster Mayor Visits Auckley
Mayor Peter Davis accompanied by Councillor
Milner recently attended our school to
congratulate some of our Year 6 children
following their involvement in the Doncaster
Holocaust memorial service. The children
confidently gave readings within the service and were a credit to the school.
Earlier on this year all the children worked on their drama productions for community
members.
Red Riding Hood
Key Stage 2 children performed their hilarious pantomime to friends, grandparents and
parents. It certainly was Red Riding Hood with a difference complete with “ hoola hoola”
girls (sorry boys!!) and a very outspoken Red Riding Hood.
Key Stage 1 and Foundation school productions
Key Stage 1 and foundation stage children also performed earlier on this year It was
amazing to see such
confidence from even
our smallest children
who certainly performed
for all with great “flair”
As usual it was lovely to
see so many community
members in school and
thanks for the many
positive comments and
messages we received.
Many Thanks

Driving Hazards
Doncaster Advanced Motorists
Dear readers, A hazard is anything that contains an element of potential danger. That includes junctions, roundabouts,
hillcrests and bends, as well as the position and movement of other road users and even the weather.
Imagine combining all six of these elements in one scenario and you have a massive potential for danger.
To an Advanced Driver, any junction, say a roundabout, traffic lights or a left or right turn, is a hazard, not
just a child running into the street, a blind bend or an accident black spot. This means that it is essential
for you to position your vehicle correctly when dealing with them, giving you that one essential safety
‗ingredient‘ sufficient time to react.
To minimise your chances of being affected by other peoples mistakes or adverse driving conditions you
must take a planned and systematic approach to your driving.
What is Commentary Driving:
Commentary driving- describing aloud everything you see, think and do whilst driving- is a great way to
hone your driving technique. On a busy road or in an urban environment you‘ll often find there is so much
going on that you can‘t describe it all quickly enough – you simply can‘t keep up verbally.
This proves how many thought processes a vigilant driver goes through on an everyday drive. Commen-
taries illustrate how much you are really seeing and the level of thinking involved, not just your actions.
Driving Plans: The three simple questions.
What can be seen? Plan your drive on what you can see ahead, to the rear, and all around you.
What cannot be seen? Remember that danger can exist on every hidden section of the road
What might reasonably be expected to happen? Keep a look-out for clues to dangers that may lay ahead,
eg: Junction warning signs give early notice that a driver may be waiting to pull out ahead.
Dustbins outside houses on a twisty road mean that there could be a stationary dustbin lorry around the
next bend.
Loose hedge clippings or straw on a country road, warn that there could be a slow moving tractor or
combine harvester round the next bend.
Don‘t follow buses to closely or you may get stuck behind them when they pull up at the next stop. Drop
back a little and keep a lookout for
the next stop, as it provides advanced
warning of an opportunity to pass.
Prioritise hazards in order of impor-
tance. Deal with each one accord-
ingly.
With these potential hazards in mind
drive within the limits of what you
can see, never assume anything and
plan for danger to emerge from ob-
scured areas.

Baldness vs Computers!
If you know me, then it‘s clear to see that I‘m folically challenged, or that being so tall I‘ve simply
begun to grow through my hair! The simple fact is I‘m a little thin on top. But let‘s put that to one
side for the moment.
This last month I‘ve had a bit of a disagreement with a financial institution. You see they didn‘t be-
lieve that I lived at the Rectory in Finningley. Why, because the computer said so! And of course, if
the computer said so, then it must be true. (You may be picking up a little sarcasm or cynicism
here.) Apparently, I‘m registered on the electoral roll as ‘Mr’, however, the form I completed re-
quired me to put ‘Reverend’. This caused the computer to spit its dummy out, overheat, and gener-
ally become annoying, because it simply couldn‘t accept that Mr Neil Redeyoff and my date of birth
and Reverend Neil Redeyoff and my date of birth were one and the same!!
You may have thought that this would cause some kind of alarm to trigger. I‘d like to think it would
be a loud claxon and a rotating red light. This would in turn attract the attention of a real human
who would perhaps see the problem and override the computer, or at least ring me to
check......Erm, no it didn‘t.
No call, no human override, just a lot of hassle as I now try to make them understand that I am the
same person. Of course I can‘t actually speak to anyone, I have to write, and no doubt my letter will
be read by a computer! Aghhhh!!
We often hear that companies have ‗excellent customer service‘, yet the information they have is
based on what they store on the computer. It seems to me that there is a real danger that the more
‘information’ technology we employ, the less we actually ‘know’ people.
Luke writes, ―Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed,
the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”
The financial institution had information on me, but
didn‘t know me, the computer clearly couldn‘t think
for itself, and so didn‘t know me, and in many of
today‘s experiences we are not truly ‗known‘. How-
ever, I believe in a God who knows me and loves
me. So much so that He knows the number of hairs
on my head – yes, not many to count, but it‘s the
principle that counts. I‘m known, and I‘m loved.
Blessings
Revd. Neil Redeyoff
