If you need help changing your reservation, please contact us at SJNChristmasMass@gmail.com. Thank you for your cooperation as we try to accommodate as many people as possible for Christmas in a safe manner.
Do You Have Loved Ones Who Have Stopped Coming to Church? As we prepare this Advent Season for the birth of Jesus, let us give thought to our family, friends, neighbors and fellow Catholics who will attend Mass to celebrate the birth of Jesus and not be with us throughout the rest of the year. We need to call to mind how the shepherds were visited by an angel who told them to not be afraid: “I bring you good news of great joy which will come to all people; for to you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”Be one of those shepherds, glorifying and praising God by personally reaching out to the Good Shepherd’s lost sheep. Proclaim to them the Good News of what you have seen and heard and invite them to Mass in the New Year. This Christmas Season, give the best gift of all--one that comes from a loving heart – give the gift of faith. May God bless you this Advent and Christmas Season.Deacon Carl Calcara

Religious EducationReligious Education The Mass is Prayer by Kim Mazzon, Pastoral Associate – Ministry to the SickMass as Prayer – Gestures & PosturesOur gestures and postures at Mass support our participation in its prayer. As noted last week, our active participation in the Mass is our cooperation with God as He draws us into the memorial, or re-presentation, of Christ’s sacrifice. These gestures and postures are secondary but reinforce the intent of what is taking place in the Mass.
GesturesSign of the CrossWhen we make the Sign of the Cross, we physically declare our faith in the Triune God and in effect call upon His name. We see people calling upon God’s name in the Old Testament for the purposes of asking God to guide their lives and asserting their commitment to the covenant (Genesis 4.26; 12.8; 26.25; 1 Kings 18.24, 32). The prophet Ezekiel and the disciple John describe protection as a purpose for the Sign of the Cross (Ezekiel 9.4-6; Revelation 7.2-8).
Sign of PeaceThe Sign of Peace is a way of extending Christ’s peace through our relationships and commitment to the New Covenant. This practice challenges us to honor the words we prayed in the “Our Father” as we prepare to receive the Eucharist.
PosturesStanding & SittingStanding at Mass indicates something worthy of attention and respect is going to happen. Sitting is a posture for listening and recollection. Think of the times you stand or sit at Mass. These postures call for effort and focus in order to participate well in the Mass.
KneelingOur practice of kneeling during the Mass is based on scripture. For example in Luke 22.4, Jesus humbly kneels in prayer as He appeals to His Father to “…take this cup away…” and yet submits to His Father’s will. When we kneel before God, we show our humility as we surrender our will so we can submit to His will. Kneeling also indicates our worship as we acknowledge God’s majestic presence during the Eucharistic Prayer and before and after receiving the Eucharist.
This completes this series on the Mass as Prayer and I appreciate your interest. May you have a Merry Christmas and blessed New Year.
December BaptismsThe Third Sunday of Advent is known as Gaudete Sunday, which means "rejoice." There were more reasons to rejoice as four children and infants, all siblings and cousins, were Baptized on December 13 by Father Ryan Schmit:
Cole Philip BantenMakenzie Diane DealGrayden Thomas DealElle James Deal
BaptismsFuture Available Baptism date: January 10, February 14, and March 14 at 12:15 p.m. Baptisms will return to our usual time of 12:15 p.m. beginning in December. FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 20, 2020
Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. – Luke 2:10-12“This helpless baby, born without luxury or fanfare, was the solution to mankind’s greatest problem. Most people weren’t paying attention when He arrived, but those who noticed either felt threatened or responded in worship. The same is true today. Most people think of Jesus with indifference. . .many are threatened. . .then there are those who worship. The worship is imperfect, but it is an offering that nonetheless pleases God. Could we worship Jesus [this Christmas Season] with. . . a gift of time, money, or best of all, of our hearts? Before the night is done, could you sit with Him for a moment on His birthday and give Him the gift of your presence? He will meet you there, and bestow on you the deeply satisfying gift of grace.” – From the “Be Still” Devotional by Lisa Brenninkmeyer
The Order of Christian Initiation is always available for those seeking a church home and the Sacraments, when they or someone they know is ready to take the next step to a life of discipleship in the Catholic Church. Parishioners are always welcome to "drop in" and join us as we discuss and learn together about Catholic life, faith, and action.
On behalf of the Parish Staff and the OCI Team, let me invite you to learning, reflection and discernment as those among us make their way toward the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist).
It is never too late to begin attending sessions. Regardless of your religious background or experience with church, we will work with you wherever you happen to be, and help you to life in our community. If you know of someone who might be interested in joining us, please invite them.
If you'd like to join us for our sessions on Sundays beginning at 12:30 p.m., go to this link: https://tinyurl.com/OCI-Sunday.
If you'd like to take part in our sessions on Tuesdays beginning at 6:30 p.m., then go here: https://tinyurl.com/OCI-Tuesday.
Support Groups Offered for Families with Loved Ones Struggling with Mental Illness and/or Substance AbuseDid you know…• One in four Americans has a mental health condition; 70% of whom do not seek treatment.
• One in five youth ages 13 to 18 experience severe mental disorders in a given year. • About 9.2 million adults have simultaneous mental health and addiction disorders.
Most of the people who are struggling have families who deeply care about them. Increasingly, our families are dealing with the mental illness and/or substance abuse of their children, siblings, spouses, and even parents. Perhaps you are experiencing this in your own family. The local National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) organization offers support groups for those with mental illness and support groups for their families. St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Sunbury holds a monthly virtual meeting for the family support group on the first Thursday of each month. The next meeting is Thursday, January 7. You can participate in this meeting by entering this address https://chime.aws/9159669482 in your browser or calling 267-866-0999 and entering meeting ID 9159 66 9482 256.
If you have questions, contact Barbara McKinley at bmckehres@yahoo.com or John McKinley at jmcgc@yahoo.com.
By participating in the support group, family members will learn about:• NAMI and Delaware-Morrow Mental Health & Recovery Services;• How to assist friends and loved ones;• The importance of taking care of themselves. All are welcome to participate. The group is free of charge and registration is not necessary.
Be still and know I am God.

You are always with me. Amen
Slow down your Christmas busyness and sit with our Lord for an hour this week—here in our Chapel (see schedule) or in a quiet place at home. He is in the moment and quiet, not the rush and noise. Let Him refresh and renew your spirit in these last few
days before His coming.

Pray for Those in the ServicePlease continue to remember our military and their families in your prayers.
Lord Jesus, Savior of the World and King of Peace, watch over our sons and daughters in the service of their country. Protect them from the physical and moral dangers of military life. Keep them close to You and help them live the commandments. Lord Jesus, give them the courage to serve their country with honor and dignity. Be with them when they are in danger; strengthen them when they face hardships. Above all, Lord, grant that when their service is finished, they may return to us sound in body and soul. Amen.
