Page 22 – 26: Mass Tourism in Spain

• Mass tourism involves large numbers of tourists visiting an area over a short period of time.

• In Europe the mass tourism industry has grown from nothing before 1950 to a multibillion-euro industry today.

• Mass tourism is now the most important industry in Spain.

Can you think why mass tourism has grown so rapidly since the 1950s?

Why mass tourism has grown since 1950s (see pg 22):

• Improved transport infrastructure.• Cheaper travel.• Increase in wealth.• More leisure time.• Climate and scenery.

Can you think of some of the benefits of tourism in Spain?

Any negative impacts of mass tourism on Spain?

Spanish culture...

Spanish culture... is being hidden.

Most tourists do not speak Spanish.

The resorts are losing their Spanish identity

Some holiday makers behave badly...

And not just women.

Petty crime and drug taking are

problems in resorts.

Houses are more expensive by the coast ...too expensive for most locals who have to move

inland where property is cheaper.

Some resorts have become concrete jungles

Traditional Spanish architecture is being swamped

Pollution – some partly treated sewage enters the Mediterranean Sea.

Water is scarce due to low rainfall in summer. Meeting

the water needs of tourism and irrigated farming is a

challenge.
