AtRRU,ourfacultymemberssharetheskillsandexperiencetheyhavegainedaspractitionerswithstudentswhobringtheirowndiverseexpertiseandexperiences.Studentsengageinconsiderableamountofteam-basedlearningactivitiesduringtheirprograms,creatingadynamicandinteractivelearningexchangethatencouragescreativityandproblemsolving.Furthermore,manyofourprogramsfeatureacohort-basedlearningstructureinwhichaclassofstudentsformanddevelopalearningcommunitythatlastsfortheentiredurationoftheprogramandbeyond.Learningcommunitiesenablestudentstoactivelyengagewithoneanotherandtoworkcollaborativelytogethertoaddresscomplexissues.Whenlearningcommunitiesarecohort-based,theyprovideapowerfulmeansforlearnerstocollectivelyconstructtheirownknowledgesets,engageintheachievingofsharedgoals,enhancetheprocessofmeaningmaking,developorenhanceprofessionalidentities,andreinforceperseverancetocompletethecourseorprogram.

TheMAinLearningandTechnology

ThedegreeisofferedbytheSchoolofEducationandTechnology,intheFacultyofSocialandAppliedSciencesatRRU.TheFacultyofSocialandAppliedSciencesprovidesarangeofprogramsthatfocusontheskills,knowledge,theory,andresearchthatcreateworkablestrategiesforsomeoftheworld’smostpressingchallenges.Focusingonleadership,communicationandculture,educationandtechnology,humanitarianstudies,andenvironmentandsustainabilityprogramswithinthisdiversefacultyaddresssocietalissuesthatrequirecomplexandconcretesolutions.Forindividualswhoaspiretoleadandmanagemoreeffectiveorganizations,communicateacrosscultures,andcontributetoasustainablequalityoflife–inCanadaandaroundtheglobe–RRU’sFacultyofSocialandAppliedSciencesistherightplacetolearn.

ThisdynamicandengagingtwoyearMAinLearningandTechnologyrespondstothedemandforqualifiedprofessionalswhohavetheknowledge,skillsandabilitytoassumetheleadershiprolesthatarerequiredtoplan,design,develop,implementandevaluatecontemporarylearningenvironments.Theprogramisfoundeduponprinciplesofnetworkedlearning;openpedagogyanddigitalmindsetrequiringthatstudentcollaborateandcontributemeaningfullytodigitallearningnetworksandcommunitiesinthefieldthroughouttheirprogram.Graduateswillbeabletoworkinthecreationandevaluationofdigitallearningenvironments.Theywillapplytheoreticalandpracticalknowledgetocriticallyanalyzelearninginnovationsandassesstheirimpactonorganizationsandsociety.ThepersonalizationoflearningthatisdesignedintotheMALATprogramandthecross-sectoralskillsetcultivatedintheMALATprogramenablesgraduatestoleadandsupporttheirorganizationstocontinuallyimprovethelearningexperiencesitoffers.

Thisprogramisdesignedforindividualsinvolvedinthecreationofcontemporarylearningenvironmentsthatincorporatethebestofwhatisknownaboutlearningandtechnologies.Peoplewhocouldbenefitfromtheprogramincludeseniordecision-makersresponsibleforlearning,trainingoreducation;trainingmanagersandco-ordinators;traininganddevelopmentpositions;facilitators,trainers,orinstructors.Theprogramattractslearnersfrommultiplesectorsincludingpost-secondaryinstitutions,governmentdepartments,K-12educationsystems,thecorporatesector,healthcare,not-for-profitagenciesandsmallbusinesses.

AGraduateDiplomainLearningandTechnologyisalsoofferedwhichladdersintotheMAinLearningandTechnologydegree.IfyouareconsideringaMaster’sdegreebutarenotsurewheretostart,theGraduateDiplomainLearningandTechnologymaybeafitforyou.ThereisalsoanoptiontoobtaintheIBAdvancedCertificateinTeachingandLearningResearchforthosedoingtheMastersprogram.

DesignandDelivery

Globallythereisacallforashiftinhowemploymentandlearningskillsaredefinedandtaught(ConferenceBoardofCanada,2016;WorldEconomicForum,2015).TheMAinLearningandTechnologyisfoundedonprinciplesofnetworkedlearning;openpedagogyanddigitalmindset-studentscreateandbuildontheirdigitalpresenceinordertocollaborateandcontributemeaningfullytodigitallearning

networksandcommunitiesinthefieldthroughouttheirprogram.Thevirtualsymposiumatthebeginningandendoftheprogramisoneofthemanyopportunitiesforstudentstoengagein,cultivateandcontributebacktothesedigitallearningnetworks(s)andcommunity(ies)astheylearnmoreaboutlearningandfacilitatingincontemporarylearningenvironments.Therearemanyopportunitiesforstudentstopersonalizetheirlearningexperiencesintheprogramincludingtherequiredinquiry-basedcourses(LRNT526,LRNT527&LRNT528)thatinvitestudentstofurthertailortheirlearningtotheiruniqueneedsorinterests.Theprogramhasthreeexitpathways;athesis;secondaryresearchpaperordigitallearningresearchconsultingproject.

OneofthekeyfeaturesoftheMALATprogramisthatcoursedesignanddeliveryattemptsto“modelamodel”sothatparticipantslearnaboutpromisingpracticesinthecontemporarydigitallearningenvironmentsthroughbothobservationandhands-onexperience.Someoftheinstructionalstrategiesthatwillbeusedtohelplearnersdeveloptheirproblem-solvingandcriticalthinkingskillsinclude:

• problembasedlearning,• casestudies,• experientiallearning,• networkedlearning,and• sociallearning

Aswellasexperiencingarangeofinstructionalmethodsandapproaches,learnerswillhaveopportunitiestouseavarietyoflearningtechnologiesandexperienceavarietyofwaysinwhichcontemporarydigitallearningenvironmentscanbedesigned,created,facilitatedandevaluatedthroughouttheirprogram.However,theemphasisofthisprogramisonleadingpracticesinlearning–learningprocesses,planningforlearning,designingforlearning,facilitatinglearning,andassessinglearning–thattakesplaceinadigitallearningenvironments.Thismeansthattechnologyispartofthecontextratherthantheprimaryfocusoftheprogram.Technologieswillbeusedtodelivertheprogram,theyareusedbystudentstocreatedeliverablesfortheircoursesasrequiredand,theywillalsobeconsideredthroughouttheprogramfromtheperspectiveofassessingtheirsuitabilityforsupportingavarietyoflearningactivitiesbutspecificsoftwareorprogrammingisnottaught.

DeliveryFormat

This33-creditprogramisdeliveredintwodifferentofferings:blendedoronline.Themajorityoftheprogramisexperiencedthroughonlinelearningasboththefullyonlineandblendedprogramscometogetherinthethirdonlinecourseandcontinueonlineforthedurationoftheprogram.ThecoursecalendardescriptionsbelowandrelatedcourselearningoutcomesprovidedetailedinformationonthecoursesinMALAT.UsingacombinationofWeb2.0/3.0technologiesforlearningstudentsengage,collaborate,share,createandcontributetothelearningexperiencefromanywhereintheworld.

EachonlinecourseintheMALATprogramis9weeksindurationwithapproximatelyaone-weekbreakbetweencourses.Thecoursesaredesignedforflexibilityofaccesswhileatthesametimeachievingabalancebetweenindividualworkandteamwork.Regularcontributionintheformofblogposts,

discussionsorothercourseactivitiesisrequiredandeachcoursewillhaveindividualandteamassignments.SupportsareprovidedthroughRRUforworkinginteamsatthegraduateleveltofurtherdeepenyourskillsinthatarea.

CompletionOptions

ThefirstsixfoundationalcoursesarecommontoallstudentsintheMALATorDipLATprograms.Therearethreeoptionsforprogramcompletion.

ThesisTrack

StudentsapplytotheMALATthesistrackintheirfirstyearoftheprogram.IftheapplicationisnotsuccessfultheyhavetheoptionofcompletingtheprogramfollowingtheResearchPaperorDigitalLearningResearchConsultingProjecttracks.Studentswhoareadmittedtothe12-creditthesistrackwillidentifyaresearchareaoffocusandwork1:1withathesissupervisoronprimaryresearch.SeetheabstractsofMALATstudentMAthesishere.

ResearchPaperTrack

Studentstakingthistrackwillbeengagedinadditionalcourseexperiencesincludinginquiry-basedcoursesthatrequirethemtocreatetheirownlearningexperiencewiththecourseinstructor.Theywillthentakeanadvancedresearchcourseinpreparationfortheir6-creditsecondaryresearchpaper.Studentswhochoosethistrackwillengageinadeepinvestigationonaspecificresearchquestionusingsecondarydata.Previoussecondaryresearchpapershaveincludedmeta-synthesis;criticalliteraturereviews;policyanalysisetc.SeethetitlesofMALATstudentresearchpapershere.Studentstakingthecourse-basedroutewillcompletetheirappliedresearchpaperundertheguidanceofafacultysupervisor.

DigitalLearningResearchConsultingProject

Studentstakingthistrackwillbeengagedinadditionalcourseexperiencesincludinginquiry-basedcoursesthatrequirethemtoco-createtheirlearningexperiencewiththecourseinstructor.Theywillthentakeanadvancedresearchcourseinpreparationfortheir6-creditdigitallearningresearchconsultingproject.Studentswhochoosethistrackwillgainhands-onpracticalexperiencethatwillhelpthemapplytheirtheoreticalknowledgeinareal-worldsettingontightlyscopedprojectandprovidetheresearchinformedjustificationandrationaleforthedesigndecisionsmade.ProjectsaresourcedfromavarietyofMALATprogramindustrystakeholdergroups.Studentproposedprojectsmayalsobeconsidered.

LearningOutcomesofMAinLearningandTechnology

TheSchoolofEducationandTechnologyworkswithaprogramlearningoutcomesframeworkthatinformsthecourselearningoutcomes.Programlearningoutcomesidentifywhatthelearnerwillknowandbeabletodobytheendoftheprogram.Theyaretheessentialandenduringknowledge,

capabilities(attributes)andattitudes(values,dispositions)thatconstitutetheintegratedlearningbyagraduateoftheMALATprogram.

GraduatesoftheMALATandDipLATprogramwillbeabletoapplytheprinciplesofnetworkedlearning;openpedagogyanddigitalmindsetastheyworkinthecreationandevaluationofdigitallearningenvironments.Theywillapplytheoreticalandpracticalknowledgetocriticallyanalyzelearninginnovationsandassesstheirimpactonorganizationsandsociety.GraduatesoftheMAinLearningandTechnologywillhavetheknowledge,skillsandabilityto:

1. Communicateandsynthesizeinformationandargumentsatthegraduatelevel.2. Criticallyevaluatehowlearningoccursinavarietyofcontexts.3. Designandcreateresearch-informeddigitallearningenvironments.4. Demonstrateeffectivecollaborationskills.5. Developandanalyzesupportstrategiestomeettheneedsofstakeholdersindigitallearning

Usinglearningoutcomeshelpstoclarifyaprogram’sfocus,helpsstudentsconnecttheirprogramtotheirworkplace,providesafocusforassessmentandevaluation,allowsforalignmentacrossprofessionalaccreditationbodiesofknowledgeandhelpsemployersunderstandthebenefitsoftheprogram.

GraduateDiplomainLearningandTechnology

TheGraduateDiplomainLearningandTechnology(GDLT)isdesignedtobuildtheknowledgeandpracticalskillsofprofessionalsworkinginthefieldoftechnology-mediatededucation,andmeetsthegrowingneedformanagement-levelindividualswhohavetheknowledgeandskillstoassumeleadershiprolesinprogramdesign,development,andevaluation,aswellastheneedforonlinefacilitatorswhocaneffectivelyintegrateeducationaltechnologiesintotheirteachingandlearningenvironments.TheGraduateDiplomaprogramwasdesignedtobetakenonitsown,butitmayalsoladderintotheMasterofArtsinLearningandTechnology.

TheGDLTisforlearningprofessionalsorinstructorswhoworkinoraspiretoworkintechnology-mediatedlearningenvironments,K-12teachersinterestedinintegratingtechnologymoreeffectivelyintotheclassroom,thoseresponsibleforprofessionaldevelopmentwithincorporations,governmentandthepublicsector,andseniordecision-makersresponsiblefordistributedlearningactivities.

Applicationsareassessed,basedonanintegratedandconsolidatedexaminationofacademiccredentials,workexperienceandpersonalexperience.Experienceinatechnology-mediatedlearning

environmentisanasset.Applicantswhodonothavetheformalacademiceducationtoqualifyforadmissionmaybeassessedonthebasisofboththeirformaleducationandtheirinformallearning,inaccordancewiththeRRUFlexibleAdmissionPolicy.

AgraduatediplomainLearningandTechnologywillbeawardeduponsuccessfulcompletionofasetof6corecourses(LRNT521–LRNT526).ThediplomaprogramwillladderintotheMAprogram.

PartnershipwiththeInternationalBaccalaureateOrganization(IBO)StudentsintheMAinLearningandTechnology,upongraduation,whochoosetheIBOoption,areeligibletoreceivetheIBAdvancedCertificateinTeachingandTechnologyResearchprovidedbytheIBO.WhatisanIBAdvancedCertificate?TheIBAdvancedCertificateinTeachingandLearningResearchoffersstudentstheopportunitytosupplementtheirexistingIBexperiencewithrigorous,systematicinvestigativeworktofurthertheirknowledgeandexperience.Participantsdelvedeeperintocurriculumdevelopment,pedagogyandassessmentthroughexploringrelevantliteratureandtheirownIBpractices.HowDoesitWork?WhenqualifiedstudentsapplyfortheMALATprogram,theywillindicatepreliminaryinterestintheIBAdvancedCertificateoption.Uponcompletionofthetwoweeksummerresidency,studentswillconfirmintentiontopursuetheIBOcertificate.

WhoarethePotentialStudents?IBcoordinators,educatorsandteachers/leaderswithexistingIBexperienceWhenEnrolled,WhataretheRequirements?StudentswhohaveexpressedtheirintentiontoapplyforanIBOcertificatewillhavesomeIB-relatedreadingsandassignmentsintheircoursesandresearchassignments.Theworkload,however,willbeequivalenttotheworkloadofstudentsnottakingtheIBOcertificates.StudentswhoparticipateintheIBOcertificateoptionwillhaveaccesstotheIBOOnlineCurriculumCentre(OCC).
