ENVIRONMENTRanging from simple spoofing ortampering of personal data to distributeddenial of service attacks jeopardizingglobal network operation, securityproblems are viewed as the majorimpediment to further development in thecomputer and communications field.As the main countermeasure to theseproblems, security of communications andcomputer systems became an importantrequirement both for users of on-lineservices and for technical specialistsinvolved in the design of networks andapplications. Security mechanismstherefore are embedded as an essentialbuilding block of all computer andcommunications systems at early stagesof the design. Recently designed systemslike wireless and mobile standards, peer-to-peer applications all includesophisticated security mechanisms asopposed to their earlier counterparts likethe original Internet protocols that wereseverely lacking security functions.

COURSE AIMSThe master in Communications andComputer Security aims at providing asolid background in the design andmanagement of security in major areas ofcommunications and computer science.The professional training in security willbe offered as a complement to anadvanced program in computernetworking, mobile services and imaging.Graduates will thus be able to tacklesecurity problems encountered innetworking, distributed softwareapplications and image processing.Various technical areas ranging fromsecure software to cryptographicmechanisms and practicalcountermeasures against network attacksthrough watermarking of images andbiometric identification techniques will beaddressed in several courses andlaboratories.
