BREAKING DOWN THE WALLS: REACHING YOUTH AT – RISK THROUGH THE ARTS

Hip-Hop As An Educational TOOL [2] Social Studies

(History, Economics, Government) • Use rap music to study different

periods in American History •  Can compare and contrast Harlem

Renaissance •  Social conditions around the country

• Study rap lyrics for political or social commentary •  KRS-One, Mos Def, The Coup, Talib

Kweli • Students can write rhymes about

different periods in history

South Bronx

They Like It!

Lessons Learned

• Students will embrace technology … especially when there is a space for them to express their individuality (personal profiles, pics, blog, chat)

• Provides a good opportunity to ‘academic-ize’ the use of computers • Emailing attachments • Effective search techniques

• Lessons must be mapped to prior instruction … students do not connect abstracts dots online

• Avoid multiple choice . . . They don’t mind being wrong and it doesn’t give you info on accuracy of response

•  Including pop culture or local names/places personalizes the experience

• Always include a writing component . . . Stress the need for consistency on online and in class writing.
