MATHS ALIVE!MATHEMATICS AT POKESDOWN COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL

Every classroom has a specific maths learning area.

In Foundation Stage this includes a wide range of practical resources selected to enhance key mathematical concepts.

Children in Year R self register by placing their name in the right group. This is an early sorting skill.

Maths is fun when learning to count through learning number rhymes.

A powerful way of also learning number bonds to 10.

Using maths to organise the day and learning when things happen.

Learning to take turns and making sure you get a go on the computer.

CO-ORDINATES YEAR 1

LAND AHOY! A maths and geography integrated project.

Learning about co-ordinates by using a large grid of the floor and moving objects to different places and locations.

Children are organised into groups for maths based on their prior learning and achievement.

A maths activity on length arising from a project ‘Walking with Dinosaurs’ Year 1

YEAR 2

A maths challenge corner linked to the current topic ‘Run, run as fast as you can!’

Children created their own games using numbers to 100.

Making their own number games.

Children learnt to partition two and three-digit numbers to add prices for the Ginger Bread Man sales.

Problem solving challenges in year 2.

Using rhymes and songs continues to reinforce mathematical concepts such as odd and even numbers, and this helps them to remember them.

Money, money, money!

Coins are used to recognise multiples of 2,5 and 10.

Learning about 3D shapes by investigating their properties and discussing their findings with each other and their teacher.

An independent line of enquiry to find out all about symmetry and present their ideas in individual ways.

Applying knowledge of symmetry to create an innovative and complex carpet design. Year 3

Each child created their own unique carpet design based on their knowledge and understanding of symmetry.

Connecting maths and music.

Children are learning the value of each musical note and create a score using graphical notation.

Using accurate mathematical vocabulary to explain how a mathematical problem was solved.

Solving mathematical number problems confidently and recording clearly so as to share with others.

Investigating pentominoes

A mathematical display to support children’s learning of 2D and 3D shapes.

Year 3 children link maths to French in an exciting fruit lesson

Year 4

Children begin to use 4 digit grid references to create their own battle ship game.

Using a map of Bournemouth, Year 4 are able to use their 4 digit grid references confidently.

All classes display appropriate maths vocabulary that the children can access when they need to. This supports accurate spelling.

Children are able to link their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages in Year 4.

A Year 5 and 6 project on time supported all abilities in their planning of a trip to either Paultons Park or abroad.

Children followed clear success criteria to ensure consistency and yet allow for open interpretation.

Number lines supported children planning of their day out.

Our most able Year 6 children extended their learning to ensure value for money when costing their trip

Our more able Year 6 children took part in an in depth investigation of fractions

Children are expected to use the correct terminology whatever their level and age.
