We Inspire!
Children’s Mental Health week is an important month in May. It’s a time for us to refocus our efforts to support the well-being of our students. We continue to work
to support students academically, socially and emotionally. Some of our efforts
include focusing on restorative practices, self-regulation, mindfulness, outdoor
education, healthy living, gratitude, and our Peel Attributes:
Respect Inclusiveness
Honesty Responsibility
Collaboration Caring
Many of our staff participated in a book talk this year focused on the work of
Stuart Shanker, and “Calm, Alert and Learning.” The Mehrit Society, further
supports the work of Mr. Shanker in spreading the word about how self-regulation
is so important to the well-being of our children and adults too! Consider following
them on twitter @Self_Reg or their website www.self-reg.ca for more information about how parents and educators can support our
children.
The last week of April was an exciting one and jam-
packed with fun and inspiring events. Education Week was a time for us to celebrate the work our
parents, community members, students & staff do to
inspire hope. The theme was #weinspire.
Our EdCamps were amazing again this year. This was our fourth annual Ed Camps (primary, junior,
and kindergarten). The staff offered a variety of
sessions where students had the opportunity to explore some of their interests!
Thanks to our staff and community members who volunteered their time to lead
elective sessions. Some of the fabulous sessions offered included:
Pizza Making Coding Fun Mindfulness
Gardening Slimemaking Orgami
Art Activities Movie Making Weaving
Rhythm Works Checkers Drama
Sock Puppet Making Button Making Mindfulness
We also hope you had a chance to join us for our Empowering Modern Learners
Night. You can read more about this exciting event inside the newsletter.
Please join us this month on May 15th in the evening with your children for our
PRO grant workshops for families. Come join the fun as we explore Tackling
Stress and Anxiety through Arts and Mindfulness.

assessment each day. Please ensure your child is on time and is
well rested for this week. It is also important that your child attend
regularly this week. The best way to support your child in writing
the test is by supporting his or her success at school throughout the year.
You can use the test materials released at www.eqao.com to help your child become familiar
with the format of the provincial tests and the types of questions asked; however, no home
preparation is necessary because our teachers have been using similar formats and questions
throughout the year. If you have any questions please touch base with your child’s teacher or
contact the office.

Using social media safely
With the growing number of social media sites, it is no surprise that social media is the most common form of commu-nication for children and teenagers. Posts, status updates, comments, instant messages, video uploads, tweets and texts have become a regular part of their lives. While there are many positive benefits to using social media, including staying connected with friends and expressing your interests, students must be cautious in their use of these net-works.
Among the most popular social media platforms used are Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube and Whatsapp Messenger. Many of these platforms are free and are available on smartphones and other electronic devic-es. These platforms are easy to navigate and often allow information to be shared instantly, not only with friends, but with strangers. On social media, it is important to remember that the world is watching.
Here are some tips, provided by the Canadian Safe School Network and GetSafeOnline.org, to keep your children safe and help them make smart choices when using social media:
Set some boundaries for your child before they get their first ‘connected device’ (mobile, tablet, laptop or games console). Once they have it, it can be more difficult to change the way they use it or the settings.
Have a conversation about what is appropriate online behaviour and what actions could have huge repercussions that could damage their reputation and be harmful to others.
Talk to your child about the kind of websites they look at. Encourage them to speak to you if they come across something they find worrying or upsetting on websites, games or social media.
Discuss with your child what is safe and appropriate to post and share online. Written comments, photos and vide-os all form part of their ‘digital footprint’ and could be seen by anyone and available on the internet forever, even if it is subsequently deleted.
Explain to your child that being online doesn’t give them anonymity or protection, and that they shouldn’t do any-thing online that they wouldn’t do face-to-face. Users should only accept people they know in order to protect themselves from spammers, strangers and others who may be using social networking sites to commit crimes.
Unlike when they’re meeting someone face-to-face, children don’t always know who they’re actually ‘talking’ to online, even if they think they do. Tell your children they must never email, chat, or text with strangers, and it’s never okay to meet a stranger in the real world.
Ensure your children set their privacy settings appropriately. Take the time to learn how privacy settings work on your children’s favourite sites, and teach them how to control their privacy.
Tell your children never to share personal and private information with anyone online. This includes, but is not lim-ited to, his or her full name, age, birth date, address, phone number, social insurance number, credit card infor-mation and parents’ full names.
Limit the amount of time that your children spend on social media platforms and talk about the importance of healthy and appropriate use of technology.

On the road again: How to keep your cyclist safe
Here are some tips you can review with your child to ensure bike season gets off to a great start: The right fit
children should be able to straddle the bike with both feet on the ground
a bike that is too big or too small can be a safety hazard
the helmet should fit—if it's too loose, it could fall off, if it's too tight, it's uncomfortable
Get noticed
a young child's bike should be equipped with a bell and reflector
older riders should have a light and/or reflectors Follow the rules
no riding on busy streets and no riding at night
stop for all STOP signs Actions that cause injuries
driveway ride out—not stopping and looking both ways before entering the street
running the stop sign
turning without warning
cycling in the dark
following the leader—one child goes through a stop sign or misses a parked car but the second cyclist doesn't
EXCELLENCE IN ELOQUENCE
On April 17th five of our Gr. 4 and 5 student met in the gym to
showcase their public speaking skills in our Excellence in
Eloquence speech competition. They all did a fabulous job
representing their classrooms. Congratulations to Will who will
be representing our school at Allan A. Martin on May 2nd. All
our students should be proud of their efforts!
Special thanks to our Ms. Young for organizing our school event and assisting with the regional event.
Janet I. McDougald puts the spotlight on Asian Heritage
In December 2001, the Senate adopted a motion proposed by Senator Vivienne Poy to officially designate May as Asian Heritage Month in Canada. In May 2002, the Government of Canada signed an official declaration to designate May as Asian Heritage Month.
Throughout May, students, staff and parents from across Peel will participate in a number of activities that promote the understanding of the many contributions made by Asian Canadians.
Throughout this month, the Janet McDougald community will learn about the valuable contributions a few of the many Asian Canadians have made to Canada such as Adrienne Clarkson, David Suzuki, and Lily Singh.
Our Grade Two students will be hosting our Asian Heritage Assembly on May 17th.
JUNIOR CONCERT
Please join us on Thursday, May 3rd as our Gr. 4-5 students present, “It’s Saturday.” Students are
asked to arrive at 6:15pm for the 6:30 performance. Walk if you can to avoid our busy parking lot.
Special thanks to Ms. Gardener-Edwards for co-ordinating this musical presentation!
Children’s Mental Health Week
The students and teachers at JIMPS are wearing green on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 to show
our support.
Children's Mental Health Week focuses on increasing awareness of the signs of child and youth
mental health issues, decreasing stigma and understanding that help is available and treatment can
work.
Mental Health Minute Activity
For Children’s Mental Health Week, let’s try a Mental Health Minute Activity.
Grateful seeing - Look FIRST for what’s good and working for us in life. Ask your child to share one (or two) good things about their day. Make sure you share what’s good about your day too!
“We’re going for a walk!” - Exercise relieves anxiety for up to several hours as it burns excess energy, loosens tense muscles and boosts mood. If your child can’t take a walk right now, have them run in place, bounce on a yoga ball, jump rope or stretch.
Three hugs, three big breaths - Hug your child and take 3 deep belly breaths together. Share a smile and move on with your day. This is a quick way to pause, connect and be in the moment together.
Experiment! - Together with your child you might: try a new recipe, write a poem, paint something, or play a new game. Creative expression and well-being are linked.

Day of Pink was celebrated on April 11th, 2018 in the Peel District School Board. The Grade 3 team
and student climate team performed an assembly that would inform students about how the Day
of Pink started, and why we recognize it. Students spread awareness about bullying, and bullying
against homophobia and transphobia.
Our focus was on the characteristics of our Peel Attribute of INCLUSIVENESS including: welcoming
and engaging others; treating everyone with respect and value; approaching situations free of
prejudice; reaching out to others in a fair and equitable manner; respecting differences.
Our next contest will be
taking place Wednesday,
May 2nd, 2018 (grade 3
and 4) and Thursday May 3rd, 2018 (Grade 5).
The next interactive question will be Sokoban.
Please use the Cariboutests.com website to
practice the game prior to writing the
competition. You can find it under the GAMES
tab on the left hand side of the webpage.
Kindergarten Ed-Camp
With a 90% chance of rain, the Kindergarten
Ed-Camp day did not look promising!
However, with a few changes in locations and
a twist of creativity, the ed-camp sessions
went off without a hitch! Students
participated in 9 different stations
throughout the school where they showed
their creativity, explored their green
thumbs, partook in mindfulness activities,
and so much more Students built individual
catapults, explored small worlds, planted
seeds, learned about their digestive
systems, engaged in water play, explored
rhythm and beat, relaxed with some yoga
and books, and also showed their artistic
side by painting large beach rocks. A special
thank you to all of our volunteers who helped
run and facilitate our fun filled morning!

Changes coming to elementary SafeArrival system on May 14, 2018
As you know, the Peel District School Board implemented SafeArrival, an automated absence reporting system for all students in its elementary schools in September 2016. Recently, the service provider for our system was sold to a new company and so, beginning May 14, 2018, there will be some slight changes on how you will report your child’s absence from school.
Use one of the following methods to set-up your new SafeArrival account. Please ensure the number and email address that you are using to report your child’s absences are those that we have on file.
SchoolMessenger app (free from Apple or Google Play)
1. Download the SchoolMessenger app
2. Tap Sign Up to create your account
Web and Mobile Web: go.schoolmessenger.com
1. Go to the above website
2. Click Sign Up to create your account
Interactive Toll-free Phone
1. Call the toll-free number: 1-855-209-6155
2. Listen to and follow the instructions to report an absence
As always, please report your child’s absences before the start of the school day. Late arrivals and/or early departures should be reported as soon as possible. If your child’s absence is not reported in advance, the automated notification system will contact you to inform you of the absence and will provide an opportunity to verify the absence. By reporting your child absent in advance on the SafeArrival toll-free number, website or SchoolMessenger mobile app, you will not receive a call.
All families must set up a new SafeArrival account beginning May 1, 2018. The new system will be “live” as of Monday, May 14, 2018 so please ensure your new account has been created by then. Please note: the new SafeArrival system CANNOT be used before May 14 to report any school absences. You must use our current SafeArrival system until Friday, May 11, 2018. The phone number will remain the same, only the App and website will change.
May 1 – Parents begin to set-up new
SchoolMessenger accounts
May 11 – Last day to use current
SafeArrival App or
pdsb.schoolconnects.com
May 14 – Use new SchoolMessenger App
or go.schoolmesenger.com
A new way to ‘Share the Smile’
In every Peel school and worksite, there are endless inspiring stories just waiting to be told. To help share the smile, the Peel board will launch a new website on April 30 to showcase these amazing #PeelFam stories, people and creations.
Visit www.sharethesmile.ca to view some of the stories, people and creations we’ve featured so far. We encourage students, staff, parents and the community to share the stories happening in their school community. In the top right corner, you share by clicking ‘Share Your Story’.
