Central to the MemCASE® design is the German manufactured BIO-CEL® submerged flat sheet ultrafiltration membrane module. Featuring a unique patented flat sheet composite polymer membrane, the BIO-CEL® is naturally resistant to fouling, clogging and braiding. Due to its unique membrane structure, the BIO-CEL® is the only flat sheet membrane system capable of being back flushed under pressure using permeate water. Fully automatic backwash cleaning cycles help to maintain stable flux rates and reduce the need of chemical assisted cleaning operations.

Using a MemCASE® module greatly simplifies the design and engineering requirements of a Class A wastewater treatment plant. Replacing the traditional clarifier stage for sludge separation, the MemCASE® incorporates all dedicated components of an MBR system, housed within one compact skid mounted case.
The package includes: Stainless Steel membrane tank and pipework, correctly sized pumps, aeration blower, dosing systems and valves. The pre-programmed PLC control system includes full process monitoring and data logging functions and features addition inputs and outputs, designed for control of other plant operations.
The MemCASE® can be incorporated into a new treatment plant design requiring only inlet works, process tanks and aeration equipment. Alternatively, the MemCASE® can be retrofitted in place of the clarifier tank to upgrade an existing plant.
A range of models are available with capacities from 10 m³ per day upwards. Effluent from a MemCASE® system is an ideal supply for a reverse osmosis polishing plant.

During operation, MLSS is pumped from the aeration bioreactor to the inlet of the MemCASE® filtration tank at a rate of 4 to 5 times the permeate flow rate. MLSS fills the tank and flows by gravity back into the aeration tank. Fine bubble aeration diffusers mounted below the BIO-CEL® module creates a turbulent circulating current of MLSS over the surface of the membrane panels.
The positive displacement flexible vane permeate pump creates a slight negative pressure within the membrane panels, drawing water through the membrane pores. Solids, bacteria and viruses are too large to pass through the pores and are carried on with moving MLSS. Permeate water enters the base of the permeate storage tank and flows by gravity from the tank top outlet.
An automatic cyclic backwash takes place every 10 minutes. The permeate pump stops, then reverses, pumping a small amount of water from the permeate storage tank, back through the membrane to clear membrane pore fouling.
