MC-WAP at a GlanceMC-WAP at a Glance
Improvement of MC Fuel Cells and Fuel Processing Unit performance and relevant components, to allow an efficient, reliable and safe use on board
Best integration between the MC Fuel Cells and the Fuel Processor
Design, construction, installation on board and testing of a 150 kWe Auxiliary Power Unit (APU)
Safe, efficient and reliable operation and integration of the APU prototype
Concept design of new merchant/passenger ships lay-out. The aim is to partially replace the traditional Diesel generators with multi-MW Fuel Cells power plants with diesel reforming units
Project ObjectivesProject Objectives
The main objective of MC-WAP project is to give to the maritime industry a benchmarking based on real-life and real-size tests on board of MCFC performance in terms of efficiency, volumes / weight and costs to be comparable to existing power units, providing a timeline for possible future availability of the fuel cells as a commercial product to be installed on board.

Prototype DevelopmentPrototype Development
• Valuable first experience with application and test of high power (150 kW) FC APU prototype on board ships
• A stepping stone in the difficult way to the expansion of FC Multi-MW systems in maritime sector
• A group of European Companies will achieve knowledge and experience like no other in FC application on large merchant and passenger ships
• An Italian-born technological platform, developed in the MCFC-NG project, has decided to open itself to a number of European partners
• MC-WAP wants to acquire leading position in world’s run to fuel cells marinization
Project PerspectivesProject Perspectives
• SotA in MC-FC rules and in Fuel Cells rules in marine applications• SotA in desulphurisation and fuel reforming in marine applications• Set of data concerning power profiles expected on board and needs by ships’
auxiliary plants• Set of data concerning expected operating conditions on board for the Fuel Cells
(motions, vibrations and environmental conditions)• Selection of Diesel Oil for the APU development• Partners agreement on preliminary APU architecture, including FC and FPM
schemes• Extensive tests on existing on-shore 500kW Research Plant in Marmara research
centre (Turkey) and data analysis• Design and optimisation activities for FCM and FPM• Remarkable volume and weight savings• Final design of target MCFC APU power and architecture• Identification of sites for FCM and FPM development• Contacts and project promotion for the selection of the ship on which to install
and test the APU – solution identified for a hired ship, interest expressed by one important ship-owner
• Dissemination/Training activities
