Introduction
Micro Drainage offers a range of different
WinDestraining courses to suit all levels
of expertise. All courses are run for one
day and are conducted at our Newbury
headquarters and venues throughout
the UK and Ireland. Courses can also be
held at your own premises or a suitable
alternative venue, please ask for details.
The training programmes are highly
practical, with extensive hands-on
experience using live examples to build
your knowledge, understanding and
professional competence. Whether
an experienced or new user they are
invaluable in helping you to gain maximum
value from your investment in Micro
Drainage software.
The following pages contain summaries ofeach of the courses.

TrainingCourseA:DesignFundamentals
A general introduction to the use of
WinDes, incorporating the core design
requirements to satisfy Sewers for Adoption.
Design Fundamentals covers the theory
and practical application of pipe design
using the software.
Who will beneft? This is an essential coursefor new WinDes users. It is also a valuable
refresher for experienced users, often
introducing them to features they have not
used before.
What will they learn? The course covers
the design, scheduling and analysis of
complete drainage networks with WinDes.
Primarily focused on stormwater pipe
design using the modied rational method,
this is also the only course that includes
the integrated use of the System 1 module
with the Simulation module where full
hydrograph analysis is completed.
In addition, two foul design methods are
covered. Results, graphical displays and
printing are also included in the course,
providing the user with experience in the
fundamental design tools for
pipe networks.

TrainingCourseB:
Storage,AttenuationandSimulation
This course explores the application of
ow controls and the design of storage
structures. It assists with the design
and analysis of systems to comply with
standards for Sewers For Adoption.
TrainingCourseC:
GraphicalandAdvancedDesign
This course is designed to help engineers
release the full productive power of
WinDes using the graphical interface of
the DrawNet module to demonstrate more
advanced design solutions.
Who will beneft? Engineers who would
like to use the graphical interface and
tackle more challenging design problems.
A good practical knowledge of WinDes
is required or attendance on the Design
Fundamentals and Storage, Attenuation
and Simulation courses should be
completed before coming on this course.
Who will beneft? Engineers looking to learn
how to design storage structures, add
ow controls and improve their simulation
skills. The Design Fundamentals course
should have already been completed or
some practical experience of working with
WinDes is needed to get full value from
this course.
What will they learn? The course covers
how to size storage with limited offsite
discharges. It shows how to efciently
design and model storage structures
within WinDes to minimise storage volume
requirements. Engineers are introduced to
the structured approach applied within
WinDes and shown how to use animated
simulations to analyse and evaluate their
work for both online and ofine storage
solutions.
What will they learn? Engineers will learn
how to auto-design optimum drainage
networks faster and more efciently by using
the graphical features of DrawNet. Drawing
pipe networks and other landscape features
will be demonstrated along with showing
the full interactive properties of the drawing,
such as diagnosing crossing and clashing
locations. The course explores some of the
solutions WinDes provides for challenging
design problems such as connecting to
existing networks and dealing with multiple
networks. Printing and exporting graphical
results are also covered.

TrainingCourseF:
SustainableDrainageSystems
Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) are
now a central requirement of planning
policies in the UK and Ireland. Approving
authorities will not accept plans that do not
consider SUDS solutions. WinDes has played
a central role in making SUDS a practical,
measurable addition to the engineers
options for control and ood prevention.
Who will beneft? All drainage and
development control engineers within
consultancies, their clients, and the
approving authorities and regulators
working with sustainable drainage design.
A good knowledge of WinDes is essential or
attendance on Training Courses A and B.
What will they learn? As well as thepractical application of the WinDes
SUDS capabilities, engineers will gain
an understanding of SUDS policies in
the UK and Ireland. Attendees will use
the software to rst design, size and test
SUDS structures in isolation followed by
cascading sequences of SUDS to create
a stormwater management train in
accordance with best practice. The course also covers the incorporation
of SUDS into a full drainage solution as
part of a pipe network design.

TrainingCourseG:
GreeneldRunoff,UnitHydrographsandFloodRiskManagementTools
Assessment of greeneld conditions is
rapidly becoming a pre-requisite for
planning approval. The hydrological
capabilities within WinDes enable
engineers to design systems that consider
the pre-development conditions of the
site and can include greeneld areas
in their design. In addition, mapping
existing ooding problems is an integral
part of ood risk assessments and surface
water management plans. Flood risk
management tools are needed before
and throughout a drainage design
to ensure developments are suitably
designed for exceedence.
Who will beneft? Drainage and
development control engineers within
consultancies, EA, SEPA, Local and County
Councils. A good practical knowledge
of WinDes is essential or attendance on
Training Courses A and B.
What will they learn? Engineers will use
WinDes to keep site discharges withinpre-development runoff limits and to
incorporate greeneld areas into their
designs. Important aspects of ood risk
assessment work are dealt with by this
course to ensure compliance with the
statutory service levels for ood planning.
The use of FloodFlow for overland 2D
analysis at a pre and post-development
stage is covered to enable the engineer
to meet these requirements.

TrainingCourseH:
CheckingandAuditingWinDesSubmissions
This course is designed to help checking
and development control engineers to
assess a WinDes submission.
Who will beneft? All engineers checking
drainage networks for compliance
with Sewers For Adoption, the Interim
Code of Practice for SUDS, the Code forSustainable Homes, Climate Change and
Exceedance. A good practical knowledge
of WinDes is required.
What will they learn? The key checking and
auditing requirements from all approving
authorities are covered and how the
software enables compliance is a key
part of this course. Attendees will learn
to determine greeneld runoff, inltration
feasibility, storage volume estimates,
hydraulic performance and a full range
of testing and auditing from minimum
pipe diameters to self-cleansing velocities.
Comparisons of pre and post-development
runoff will be included and the course
provides a systematic approach to
assessing printed results as well as using
auditing tools within the software.
