Copyright legislation keepsThe issue that promises to be 1994's hottest, copyright legislation, will be at the forefrontof Brian Robertson and CRIA's priorities inthe coming year.
With the move of the Liberals into powerin Ottawa, Phase II Reforms to the CopyrightAct had been temporarily suspended pendingthe appointment of a new Minister ofCommunications and the realignment of theduties of the ministry. Since this, things havestepped up and are starting to move.
"On the positive side," says CRIApresident Robertson "when NAFTA wasproclaimed, it triggered the introduction of arental right on sound recordings. This allowsthe owners of a sound recording to eitherauthorize rental or not, so they have the choice
Bush's Toronto activityhelp push album to goldKate Bush's recent flurry of promotionalactivity in Toronto has helped push sales ofher most recent release, The Red Shoes, pastthe gold mark in Canada.
Her four -day stopover in Toronto washighlighted by a party held in her honour Dec.13 at the Royal Ontario Museum, attended byindustry and record company personnel, aswell as 200 of her fans who had won ticketsthrough CFNY-FM. Following thepresentation of the gold award, Bushintroduced the Canadian premiere of her firstshort film, The Line, The Cross and The Curve.
Another promotional tool was Bushdonating the real 'red shoes' featured on thealbum cover to curator Johnathan Walford ofthe Bata Shoe Museum. Her shoes are nowencased in the only shoe museum in NorthAmerica.
In addition, Bush app eared o n the satelliteradio show Modern Rock that was broadcastacross North America. Her schedule was alsofilled with a slew of press and publicity tosupport her recently revitalized career.
industry on edgewhereas before they didn't. We are awaitinginstructions from our members on whetherthey want to authorize rental or prevent it."
There is also a negative side to the currentstate of copyright, in that "the new Liberalgovernment is insisting that all the earlierrecommendations be reviewed. Michel DuPuy(the new minister of Heritage Canada) hasindicated that he wants to strengthen it. So,it's optimistic but it's going to delay the processagain." Robertson predicts the delay this timewill be at least nine months before anylegislation will go through Parliament.
Another major project for CRIA in 1994will be the introduction of a generic marketingscheme on sound recordings tobe introduced in March or April.
"This is precipitated by an originaldecline in the sales of sound recordings. Lastyear, we had avery good year butthis initiativeis still valid. It's essentially to reinforce thevalue of recorded music. We hope to remindpeople of the pleasure in owning music."
Robertson's heavy workload does notstop there, however. Another issue he andCRIA currently have on the burner is dealing
Canadian acts to head toTexas music conferenceNine Canadian bands have been invited toperform at the South by South West Musicand Media Conference to be held March 16-20, 1994 in Austin, Texas.
SOCAN will help to finance each band tohelp cover some of the costs. The bands mettwo criterium demanded to be eligible toshowcase in Austin: that the band contain atleast one SOCAN member; and that theyperform at least 50% original material.
The nine bands are Blue Shadows, DinnerIs Ruined, The Earthtones, Fat Man Waving,King Apparatus, Jale, Sue Medley, UniversalHoney, and Wild Strawberries. More acts maybe forthcoming.

Royalty rates and Cancon on digital radiocould very well become a sticky issue in thecoming months, but so far, "Cogeco in itsupdated proposal has increased its Canconlevels and its level of rights payments. In theoriginal recommendations from Shaw andCogeco, they weren't going to pay anybody.Their rights proposals were laughably low."
With all this waiting, Robertson andCRIA will, once again, have to be patient. When the ministry was contacted, nobody atthe present time was available for comment.

Faire/Rambeau-produced special, Rita MacNeil's Once Upon A Christmas, which
ranked No. 5 with 1,933,000 viewers. The Diviners, a CBC-TV movie based
on Margaret Laurence's critically acclaimed novel, was No: 6 with 1,783,000 viewers.
CTV's For Better Or For Worse was No. 7 with 1,628,000, followed by three CBC
movies; Life With Billy, 1,559,000, Liar, Liar, 1,512,000; and Scales Of Justice: Regina vs
Truscott, 1,481,000. Anne Murray's Croonin', yet another
Faire/Rambeau-produced special, came in at No. 11 with 1.4 million viewers. Next in line
at No. 12 was Celine Dion's first English -
language special, The Colour Of My Love, produced by Carol Reynolds and aired on the
CTV network, which attracted 1.3 million viewers.
The television specials also proved to be excellent vehicles for record sales. Murray's Croonin' album, released on the EMI Music
Canada label, is now over double platinum (200,000 units). The Colour Of My Love, Dion's new
Columbia album has now sold more than 500,000 copies in Canada. A national tour is
being set up with details and dates to be released shortly.
MacNeil's Christmas album, Once Upon A Christmas, released on the Virgin label, was
certified platinum in November and, because of the TV special, is expected to move past
double platinum shortly. Her first seasonal album, Now The Bells Ring, has sold more
than 300,000 units in Canada. MacNeil's Christmas tour which began
Nov. 25 in Thunder Bay, and wrapped Dec. 23 in S askatoo n, was 93 per cent sold out, grossing
$1,276,504.75 for its 21 -date run.
Alofs lays out H1VIV's 1994 retail blueprint After a hugely successful late fall and
Christmas season, Paul Alofs, president of HMV Canada, recently reflected on the past
season's triumphs and laid out some general plans for the future of HMV.
As with the rest of the industry, Alofs and HMV experienced extraordinary success
during the Christmas rush. "It was great for HMV, and for everybody," Alofs said, while noting that "success came right across the
spectrum. There were major hits in all of the prime categories -country, rock, alternative,
everything went well. No one specific area dominated." While 1992 was a success as well, coming
close to 1993's record -breaking sales, one unique characteristic about 1993 was the
success of boxing week. "To start with, the malls were busy from early in December. But
one of the best surprises was how well boxing week went, that resulted in some spectacular sales after Christmas. We sold 100% more gift
certificates than over the same period last year." This trend can be attributed to gift -
buying consumers who are aware of the bargains to be had on boxing day, and during
all of boxing week. "It's not only our industry that had a
great boxing week. I spoke to people in fashion and in books and the sales were way up."
The main thrust of releases in the latter part of the year were the numerous major acts,
ranging from Bryan Adams and Guns N' Roses to Michael Bolton and Frank Sinatra. These
types of acts are almost guaranteed sellers and make excellent gift ideas. "But now that all of those records are out, we'll now see how the
sell -through goes. We expect to sell a lot of catalogue material over the next six to eight months."
Another of HMV's projects is the opening of eight to ten new stores across Canada, most
notably in Vancouver. As well, HMV hopes to upgrade and expand some of its existing "various and sundry" stores in the new year.
"We also intend to try out some CD- ROM and CDI technologies, but we're not going to stray far from our bread-and-butter,
which is music." Alofs also hinted at a new project HMV
is undertaking. "We're aiming to start an independent -band promotional initiative. But
that's all I'll say for now." Something Alofs is very enthusiastic
about is the upcoming CRIA generic marketing initiative that hopes to accumulate some
investment from all major companies. This initiative will deal with the large problem of
home taping across the whole music sector. "I'm very excited about this. This will be
the first time since the switch from the long box to jewel packaging that the industry has
come together as a whole." He also notes that HMV will continue to
deal with the competition in a way similar to how they always have dealt with it. Alofs
hopes this will keep the retail -ball bouncing for the next while.

It's Drew Keith . . . y'hear!!! Afterdoing a little flowery thing on that CHFImusic director with two first names, I thoughtI would switch them around and see whatwould happen. Wow! Did I get faxes and didI get letters. This guy is more popular than Ithought. Even Paul Fisher, vice president ofprogramming for the station roared off a letterto me, which was kinda cute: "Yes he takes hisjob seriously. Yes he's everywhere. Yes he'sgood, very good . . . but it's Drew Keith."Obviously, the guy has a great future in thebroadcast business. (EC: Not too many do!!!)

I should explain that both were drivingcars just in case you thought somethingimmoral was going on. And, as it happens, both represent major record companies. Thepresident ofBonnie's company was overheardto quip: "I knew they wanted to merge, butthat's doing it the hard way." (EC: It soundsimmoral to me . . .

Promotion of the week ... How doyou get the president of a record company toindulge in a wild and crazy promotion?Disguise him, how else! That's what the BMGpromotion crew did with Bob Jamieson. Theypiled into a 1945 Cadillac and showed up atthe office as ZZ Top lookalikes, or as someCanadians say, Zed Zed Top, complete withguitars. What a great promotion. We won'tsoon forget the band is now on the RCA label.
I like Zed Zed Top . .
A corporate David Foster ? Whowould have thoughtthat Canada' s top producerwould take on a corporate position with amajor US label? Well, nothing official yet, butI heard from the west coast, Victoria in fact, that Foster has taken on the job of senior vice-president of Atlantic Records. (EC: He musthave had a weak moment . . .
What's going on Ottawa??? TheCanadian book publising business and movieindustry combined, doesn't give nearly thedollar return the record industry does. Gofigure. Okay government, the bookpublishingindustry gets a handout of $50 million, andthey're pretty guarded about how much moneythat generates. Hey you beaurocrats, the movieindustry gets more and returns less. You guysin Ottawa have to know that for a measly $13million a year in government loans, most ofwhich is repaid, the record industry generates$650 million in revenue. (EC: I guess we can'texpect them to know, but we're here to tellthose guys in Ottawa a thing or two . . !) Ifanyone in Ottawa needs any furtherinformation . . . we're here, and it's FREE!
Who could ask for more??? It's gotrhythm. It's got music ... comedy and dance, and after all those mega -musicals, this is amagic musical. Crazy For You, currentlyplaying Toronto's Royal Alexandra Theatre, brings back the days of the Ziegfield era whenBroadway was the spectacular that led to thegreat musical movies of the '40s and '50s.There's no shock treatment here. This is puremusical theatre with elegant and veryspectacular costumes and a story line thattickles the imagination. I've never seen thestage of the Royal Alex look so big. Crazy ForYou has everthing. Who could ask for anythingmore? This one will be around for a very longtime . . . guaranteed!!!

For instance, for The Great White Way,there was emince of chicken breast in achampagne truffle and wild mushroom sauce;the Suns & Moons featured fresh scallops andshrimp in a tomato sauce with a au julienne ofleek, carrot, celery and green pepper;Broadway Blend was apresentation of a subtleblend of wild rice flavoured with a long grainsaffron rice; Gaiety Greens showcased a

RPM CHART WEEKLY -

"We're doing a prime -time network special with ABC coming up in April. Right
after Christmas we'll be premiering Bedtime With Barney, which is a radio show, and then we'll have Barney live at Radio City for a week in March. Then a Bedtime With Barney
record release in March, and then we have the ABC special, and we're working on a movie
for the summer of '95." Leach's company, Lyons Group, recently
signed a distribution deal with EMI Music, who will distribute the music of Barney both here and in the US. The music will be published
under Barney Music. Their first release, Barney's Favorites (released in Canada on the
SBK label), has already surpassed platinum in Canada, and double platinum in the US.
According to Leach, the deal with EMI
was achieved after considerable searching. "I had spent about a year looking at the various record companies. By the time we
were seriously considering a move, they'd all contacted me. I spent a year travelling from
one to another to another, and interviewed all the big ones.
"With EMI it was the chemistry of the team. A lot of the people there were Barney dads and moms, and they saw Barney as a
personality or a star, whereas many of the companies saw Barney strictly as a children's
commodity. EMI didn't have a children's music label, so he didn't fall in with a whole
lot of other characters or properties relating to children." The question Leach has probably
Barney is a dinosaur of Sheryl's imagination What is it someone once said about Elvis
detractors? - 50 million Elvis fans can't be wrong. It's that same philosophy that Barney creator Sheryl Leach utilizes whenever she
hears of more criticism regarding the big purple dinosaur.
"We created Barney for kids, not adults. He's seen by 14 million viewers a week, and
whenever something is seen by that many viewers at the same time, there's going to be
a few opinions, contrary to the one we would want."
Barney is the epitome of the phrase 'you either love him or you hate him'. Despite his huge television audience, tremendous video and album sales, and numerous other
successful sidelights (toys, books, games etc.), he is still under heavy criticism from adults,
who see his gushing charm and awe -shucks appeal as downright sickening, almost
condescending to children. But the final statement is in the profit margin, and in that aspect of market response, Barney can do'no wrong.
"We thought it would be very big, from the beginning, but as it materializes, you say
to yourself, I can't believe this." says Leach. " You work foritto happen, you believe it will
happen, but when it happens, it happens differently than you thought." Leach created Barney five years ago,
desperately seeking some form of
entertainment for her two year old son that would actually hold the child's attention for
more than 20 minutes. "I had a very active two year old at home,
I was on a long maternity/sabbatical, and my life consisted of a mad search for things that
would keep him occupied and happy with something I felt good about.
"So I thought to myself, 'My husband's family just built a video studio, and I'm a mom, and I was a teacher, and I have product
experience, and I have sales and marketing experience'.
And I thought, 'I wonder how hard it would be to come up with a video'. Along the
way I dreamed up a central character, and I wanted it to have the multi -ethnic kids, and I wanted it to be music based, and an adventure
story. And I just put it together." Barney was originally going to be ateddy
bear come to life, which changed when her son saw a travelling dinosaur exhibit. Leach
teamed with Kathy Parker, also a teacher and mother, and video producer Dennis DeShazer,
to produce the Barney Home Video series. Disney aired a number of episodes of the
series, before Leach moved the series permanently to PBS in May of '91. PBS has
aired over 30 episodes of the series since April of '92, with more on the way. And as
Leach points out, the incredible success is leading to more projects all the time.

answered hundreds of times, is one she stillhas difficulty answering. Why is Barney sopopular.
"Part of that is known, and part of that isunknown. Barney is loving and kind, like anadult with a child's heart. So kids feel verywarm and comfortable and accepted by him.But then part of it you really can't explain -what makes Mickey Mouse work andsomething else not. Part of it is justunexplainable."
Obviously having the role of aninfluential member of the industry makesLeach's viewpoint on children's televisioncensorship very important. For her, the marketof children's media is as shifting and self-adjusting as any other.
"I really think that in our society thestrongest catalyst for change is programminglike Barney, that is commercially successful.Because if violence sells, it's going to berepeated, but if Barneyesque programmingsells, then the programmers say, 'wait a minute, this sells better than Ninja Turtles or X -Men,and we should be copying that."
If Barney is any indication, kidsprogrammers may be canning Ninja Turtlesfaster than they can order a pizza. ThoughBarney's momentum may fade, Leach feelshe's here to stay.
"I think it's a natural tendency for thingsto come and go, and there are other things thatbecome perennials. And I think Barney is aclassic, a new classic. I really feel Barney willbe around for years to come."
Blurb: Texan Sheryl Leach has childrensinging and adults groaning with herimagination creation, Barney.

iEVA\1 KO=1 Vancouver's Z95.3FM has released its
third independent album, Vancouver's Hottest New Music. Brad Phillips, program director
at the city's No. 1 FM station (Fall '93 BBM), reports that the new CD and cassette features
new material from 14 Vancouver and area artists. The record is available for purchase by
the general public at 14 Music World locations in Vancouver and Victoria. "We have invested
heavily in the development of local unsigned talent," says Matthew McBride, the station's
assistant program director who is also the executive producer of the annual album
project. "I feel this could be the best independent compilation ever made in Vancouver." Released prior to Christmas, the
album features three songs from the 1993 playlist, eight songs that are released for the
first time and ready for airplay throughout 1994, and, in keeping with the seasonal
heritage of the project, three original Christmas songs commissioned exclusively for the
album. Included was the key single by Vancouver songwriter/performer Thomas
Donovan, All We Need For Christmas, which was a focus song for the station during the
holidays. Handling the technical properties for the project was the team of Adam Shafron
and Adam Stern of ADAM Records in Yaletown. Promo copies and more information available from McBride at 604-241-0953.
Vancouver's 99.3 The Fox held its 6th annual Santa Fox Food Drive for the Lower
Mainland Food Banks which raised more than 25,000 food items, well over the station's goal
for this year. Listeners dropped off "tons of food," says promotion director Jody Elle, at station events, the Future Shop and at the CFOX studios. Listeners who brought food
donations to station -sponsored concerts of Bon Jovi and Rod Stewart even had the chance
to upgrade their tickets to front row. The station mounted a four -day blitz (over 60
hours of live broadcasting) which took in

various communities which gave residents a chance to help out and feel that they were part
of the drive. Food items were still being dropped off at the station into the new year.
CFRB 1010 Today, a daily, one page, point form summary of the highlights to be heard on the Toronto station, is making big news around the city. Written and produced early each weekday morning, the capsuled
news and events release is faxed to businesses and various organizations, governments and
their agdncies as well as the station's advertisers, free of charge. The fax arrives at
the various offices each morning by 8 a.m. The top 10 news items of the day are
highlighted along with Wally Crouter's Thought For The Day, Bill Stephenson's
Scoreboard, Harold Hosein's Weather. Also listed are the guests who will be appearing on
the various talk shows that day. Of particular interest is the daily People Poll straw vote on
questions of the day, sampling public attitudes. Those interested in being put on the fax list, should call Rob Mise at 416-928-2198 or fax
416-924-3049.
A yuk from CFGP's Kevin Hilgers you can save for next Christmas. "Have you
heard of Santa's other famous reindeer? Tanner the brown -nosed reindeer. He was known for
being just as fast as the other reindeer, but couldn't stop as quick." In his Pick -Up Line
Put -Down category Hilgers has a few examples of what to say when you try to pick up a dance
partner and she tells you to get lost. If you ask her if she would like to dance and her answer
is no, you might come back with "Aw, come on, don't be choosy, I wasn't," or "Aw, come on, might help shrink that butt you've got
there," or "Aw, come on. I promise I won't laugh." How about if she says she's with
someone. You might hit her with, "You mean the guy who asked ME to dance?" or, "I guess
that doesn't happen too often, huh?" Or, how about, "Aw come on, I don't think your dad'll mind." Hilgers has volumes of this very funny
material that he uses on his early morning audience atthe Grande Prairie station. If you're
interested in what he has, give him a call at 403-532-1050 or fax 403-532-1600.
Hedley Jones leaves CFNY-FM after 14 years with the Toronto free -form radio
station. Known as "Deadly Hedley", he was the driving force behind the station's popular
weekend shows Reggae & Rhythm, World Beat Music, and the all-night dance party show Get Dressed, which aired Friday nights from the studio and was broadcast live every
Saturday night from Klub Max. He also DJs every Tuesday at Yucatam's (formerly
Richard's) College Night and every Friday at Studio 69. No news about his future, but lots
of speculation about the station changing its format very drastically.
C -FAX paid all the costs associated with a competition to choose Victoria's new
official song plus the cost of producing a digital recording of the winning entry. The winner was local resident Susan Ellenton for
herpenning of The Harbour Of Her Heart. The competition was the brainchild of Victoria
City councillor Martin Segger to celebrate the city's 150th birthday in 1993. Morry Stearns
produced the single at Victoria's Seacoast Sound. Under terms of the competition, the
song becomes the property of the City of Victoria.

FOREIGNERClassic Hits LiveAtlantic -82525PFew seventies bands were as successful for aslong as Foreigner, who stretched together aseries of hits from the late seventies to the lateeighties. This album rock fixture has nowencapsulated a musical career on a live record, which features all of the hand's biggest hits, including some of the band's live cuts. Includedare such seventies classics as, Cold As Ice,Waiting For A Girl Like You, Urgent, I Want ToKnow What Lave Is, and the group's first hit,Feels Like The First Time. As with many livealbums, this one essentially serves t o pay homage
to the band, which essentially no longer exists, but this would go perfectly alongside the rest ofyour classic seventies albums. RR

Hard to believe, but this is Rea's 14th album and his fourth in thelast five years, making him one of the moreprolific artists around. What Espresso Logic offersis intricate pop sounds featuring Rea's standoutslide guitar work and witty lyricism. Featuredtracks include the rhythm -oriented Julia, thesharp lyrics and rousing spirit of Soup Of TheDay, and the final, poetic She Closed Her Eyes. This album was written and produced entirely byRea. BRAD BAYLEY. Things I Didn't Say
ATI.091662This Alberta artist has a voice for all seasons, and all formats. Country would appear to be hisroots which he neatly and very cleverly highlightswith a bit of a pop and rock edge. That shouldmove him easily into "new" country. Initial
Country/Pop
response has been very encouraging with morethan 1,000 units sold within days of release. Heis well known in his home province and thispackage should see him spill out across the restof the country. There's an extraordinary comfortrange to Bayley's vocals, which producer GaryKoliger has nicely balanced with some prettygood western Canadian pickers. Koliger providesmuch of the instrumental hacking on banjo, mandolin, acoustic, classical, electric, slide, pedalsteel and lead guitars and piano, with an assistfrom keyboardist George Blondheim, bassistsMike Lent and John Towill, drummer Tim Lentand Calvin V ollrath on fiddle. The album wasrecorded at Edmonton's Beta Sound Recorders.Key tracks include Faith And Hope, Maple Street, and Alana's Love, which are Bayley originals, and Dance In 314 lime, which he wrote withproducer Koliger and Scoot Irwin. TRAILBLAZERSMaster PlanIndependent releaseQuite a impressive indie release from thisHamilton, ON band. The Trailblazers consist ofAlex MacDougall (guitar and vocals), MelanieJean (lead vocals), Gerry Gregg (bass), JoeLomano (drums) and Lily Sazz (keyboards). Thisset was recorded at Morningstar RecordingStudio. Producer and engineering credits go tobandmember, industry veteran, MacDougall.MacDougall is also credited with penning nine ofthe ten tracks on this effort. Musically andvocally inspiring, Melanie Jean has a trulyhypnotic style. The actual format of musicincluded on this release is too broad to pin point, from the jazzy, country rock of Rubber Heels tothe impelling gospel vibes of Since I Lost You, tothe southern blues of Wanted (In 50 States), theTrailblazers' expansive repertoire is certain torevitalize the club scene. Should appeal to all
blues and new country audiences as well as jazz. For more information on the group contact :(905)-521-3040. SL

Desire Walks OnCapitol -99627FAnn and Nancy Wilson have prided themselveson being able to rock with the hest of them formany years, although the last few albums sawthem diverge into more keyhoardish sounds to goalong with that eighties sound. As with mostolder bands, however, they've now decided toreturn to their rock roots on this latest release. The album was recorded at the group's newstate of the art Bad Animals studio in Seattle, and promises to give the band a whole new lifeon AOR radio. The album's release wasaccompanied by a 12 -city comfy -seat theatretour, which brought the back -to -basics idea rightinto focus. Featured tracks include the lead
single, Lisa Dalbello's Black On Black II, and therock ballad Will You Be There (In The Morning),with Nancy on lead vocals. This should he thealbum that returns Heart to the top of albumchart status. -RR
GARY FJELLGAARDBelieve In ForeverSavannah -9845-HWith the current success of Train Of Dreams, programmer attention should quickly gravitatetoward this newest release from one of theveterans of country music. Fjellgaard hasn'tmissed a chart outing in all the years of releasingsingles and this Bill Buckingham production willobviously maintain that status. Fjellgaard'sunique folk approach to country gives him anedge over his counterparts. He's a masterstoryteller and one who prioritizes theenvironmental shortcomings. This album shouldbe at least six singles deep, key being: WhatAbout Love, Believe In Forever, Dancing Up AStorm, The Falcon And The Cowboy (Keepers OfThe Earth), The Old Green Wall and his duet withAnita Perras, Trace Back To You. Also containshighlights from his previous albums: Winds OfOctober, Heart Of A Dream, Time And Innocence, and No Time To Lose. Invaluable for the countryradio programmer. - WG

also creates his first contribution specifically fora movie with the stirring Philadelphia, whichconcludes the film. This soundtrack also featuresoriginal tracks by Peter Gabriel, Sade, IndigoGirls and Spin Doctors, who do a 90's version ofCCR's Have You Ever Seen The Rain? The movie

this hould be a decent seller. Griffin teams upwith producer Steve Anderson for co -writingcredits on many of the songs, but it's his heartyvocarzing that will g ain him attention. Highlightedtracks include the Diane Warren -penned leadsing! , Commitment Of The Heart, the seventiespops unds of Love TKO, the torchlike Show MeSomeone Who Cares, and the ambitious Song OfThe and. BLUR
Modern Life Is RubbishFood Records -E2 -89442-FBritish pop hand Blur experienced a good degreeof success with its first release, Leisure, particularly in the modern rock circuit. Thissecond album finds the band downplaying theManchester sounds of Leisure for a quirkier, more varied take on pop music. Some easycomparisons are Camper Van Beethoven, sometimes Jazz Butcher and Billy Bragg(especially in the lyric 'Colin Zeal/knows thevalue of mass appeal'), but Blur are inventive andoff -kilter when it comes to song arrangementand production. Stand out tunes include BlueJeans with its interesting use of melodica; OilyWater, a The The -like song with jangly guitar andan explosive feedback second half; and MissAmerica, a song that could have been on Bowie'sSpace Oddity album. The wry, humorous mood ofthe whole albumin summed up in a lyric framthissong: 'She's no jellybeanIshe's a Jemimalho ho.'The group is currently receiving substantialmodern rock airplay and video rotation. -CT

After making significant waves with his impressive duet with Celine Dion on When I Fall
In Love (fromthe Sleepless In Seattle Soundtrack),
British soul singer Clive Griffin is hoping to make
a splash on his own with this debut effort. If packaging and style points count for anything,
this should be a decent seller. Griffin teams up with producer Steve Anderson for co -writing
credits on many of the songs, but it's his hearty vocalizing that will gain him attention. Highlighted
tracks include the Diane Warren -penned lead single, Commitment Of The Heart, the seventies
pop sounds of Love TKO, the torch -like Show Me Someone Who Cares, and the ambitious Song Of
The Land. This album features notable studio players
- bassist Nathan East, keyboardist Greg
Philling anes and guitarist Phil Palmer most notably -and has professional written all over it.
Could easily find a home right next to Celine Dion
and Michael Bolton in your CD file. -RR

Modern Life Is Rubbish Food Records -E2 -89442-F
British pop hand Blur experienced a good degree of success with its first release, Leisure,
particularly in the modern rock circuit. This
second album finds the band downplaying the
Manchester sounds of Leisure for a quirkier,
more varied take on pop music. Some easy comparisons are Camper Van Beethoven,
sometimes Jazz Butcher and Billy Bragg (especially in the lyric 'Cohn Zeallknows the
value of mass appeal'), but Blur are inventive and
off -kilter when it comes to song arrangement and production. Stand out tunes include Blue
Jeans with its interesting use of melodica; Oily
Water, a The The -like song with jangly guitar and
an explosive feedback second half; and Miss
America, a song that could have been on Bowie's Space Oddity album. The wry, humorous mood of
the whole album is summed up in a lyric from this
song: 'She's no jellybean/she's a Jemimalho ho.' The group is currently receiving substantial
modern rock airplay and video rotation. CT

14 - RPM CHART WEEKLY - Monday January 10, 1994
Benson Reid promises You Get What You GiveOrillia's Benson Reid isn't what you'd callthe quintessential rock and roll hard luckstory. He's one of those artists who's alwayshad control over his destiny, and always knewhe had talent. That talent isevident on hisdebut releasethrough MCA,You Get WhatYou Give.
Reid hasbeen sur-rounded by mu-sic from anearly age, com-posing his firstsongs as earlyas eight or nineyears old. Afterplaying in nu-merous jazz androck bands dur-ing his highschoolyears, hestretched hismusical diver-sity somewhatby studyingclassical musicat York Univer-sity.
Emergingfrom university with a yearning to display histalents, Reid played and sang in numerousbands, innumerous styles -jazz, country, pop.It was a meeting with producer Steve Sextonthat led Reid to the recording studio, wherethe first tracks for the album were laid down.
"I've known Steve for quite some timeactually. He's obviously very successful in anumber of areas. He's had a knack of beinginvolved with people at a very early stage. Hissensibilities are something I can work with - Imean I always knew Steve would produce myalbum."
Sexton introduced Reid to a number ofstellar studio players, including guitarist DougMacAskill (Rod Stewart, Eddie Money),drummer Michael McClelland (MoeKaufmann, Shirley Eikhard), vocalist LisSoderberg (Mad About Plaid), bassist JaySpeziale, saxophonist Vern Dorge, andvocalist Vivienne Williams. Perhaps themost notable personality Sexton brought inwas famed mixer and producer Terry Brown(Rush, Blue Rodeo), who Reid admittedly metwith some trepidation.
"I was quite a bit nervous, to be honestwith you, when we went in to mix. But he wasso conscious of trying to capture what it waswe were looking for. Off all the people on therecord, Terry and I have become really goodfriends."
After getting the tracks cut, it was then amatter of salesmanship. Although Reid wasoriginally signed with BEI's Jeff Burns, thatpartnership dissolved, leading Reid to MCA.
"I was originally signed with Jeff Burns, but the company was having some problems,it wasn't a very good time for BEI. Which got
me back into negotiations again with RossReynolds. Ross was nice enough to take thetime to talk to me, and they finally agreed toput it out."
For Reid, thetrail to the re-cording con-tract was filledwith adversity,leaving himwith a new-found admira-tion for persist-ence.
"There are alot of peopleyou'll meetalong the waywho'll leaveyou with theimpression thatyour record isreally no good. You have to re-ally believe inwhatyou' re do-ing. There's alot of walls youencounterwhere, if youdon't have areal strong con-viction you're
just going to fold over."I'm sure we could all find a disc in our
collection that we really love that never hadany commercial success. If every recordcompany from here to Timbuktu turned medown, I'd still believe it's a good record."
Reid feels the area where he's strongestis in songwriting. For him, there can be nosuch thing as a good record, without goodsongwriting.
"Forme, melody is the key to everything.I don't know that you can dress up a badmelody. But there seems to be a sense that ifit's melodic, it's soft, and they'll want to putthat AC stamp on it. And then they'll arguethat AC, or soft pop records, just don't sellvery well."
He believes that music today has, inmany ways, lost the art of writing a goodmelody. Which goes a long way to explainingthe new trends popping up in music lately.
"I think it explains why people haveturned to new country, because it's verymelody based, and covers all the strongelements of songwriting. And it doesn't seemto contain a lot of that soap -box posturing youfind in other music."
"I don't appreciate artists telling me howmisguided I am, or silly I am, or stupid I am,or anything like that. And I think some peopledo it just for the sake of doing it."
Reid believes that when all is said anddone, his songwriting will carry his record toany commercial success. And as he frequentlysaid, quoting Ray Charles, he doesn't want tobe rich, he doesn't want to be famous, he justwants to be good.

Distribution deal firmed for Royalty and DMT R. Harlan Smith, president of Royalty Records,
and Danny Makarus, president of DMT Records, recently announced the signing of
an agreement whereby Royalty will be the exclusive Canadian distributor for all recorded
product released by DMT. Both companies are based in Edmonton.
Royalty, an independent distributor, employs sales agents in B.C. and a full-time
representative for the prairie provinces. The company's sub -distribution agreement with
the Trend Music Group, which covers Ontario, Quebec and the maritimes, makes the national picture complete.
Smith credits his company's recent growth to several factors, including
"significant airplay from most radio stations," on artists Greg Paul, Tineta, and now Amber
Dawn Fleury. The company has also released several titles by The Emeralds.
Smith also credits the company's growth to the "excellent co-operation and support
from retailers such as HMV, Sam's, and most recently, A&B Sound." A significant number
of major rack jobbers have also listed and support the label's catalogue.
Initial DMT release under the new distribution agreement will be an album by
Kidd Country, regarded as one of the most sought after club and one-night acts based in
the west. Also scheduled for release is an album
simply titled Charlotte, by Charlotte Wiebe, a driving force from Jenson Interceptor, an early
'80s band. Besides new material, Charlotte's album will include the band's hit, Tiny Thing.
Royalty president R.Harlan Smith (I) makes distribution deal official with DMT's president Dan Makarus (r) and Gerry Dere.

FEPRA helps promote family entertainment The recently created Family Entertainers,
Performance and Recording Association continues to add to its impressive membership
list, while still in its first year of existence. FEPRA was created by a number of key
players in the family entertainment and recording industry, to enhance public awareness ofthe industry (RPM
- July 24/93).
According to one of FEPRA's founding members, Tanglewood Group's Bruce Davidsen, the early response to FEPRA has
been overwhelming. "The first salvo was shot off about a
month ago, and we've gotten interest from people all over the place, including the US

The membership at the moment includes an impressive array of industry manufacturers,

(formerly Sony Kids), MCA, BMG Kids, Walt Disney (Canada), Western Publishing (Can.), Y.T.V., The Family Channel, T.V. Ontario,
Elephant Records, and children's entertainers Fred Penner, Eric Nagler and Robert Munsch.
Davidsen indicated that while the organization is Canadian -based, they are
seeking international contributions. "We built it so it wouldn't be just a Canadian organization. We specifically kept
Canada out of the name, because we wanted known names from the states."
One of the principal reasons for the creation of FEPRA was to provide an inroad
for family entertainers who might otherwise be neglected.
"One of the toughest things in this business, ifyou're new, is just getting someone
to listen. At least in the rock and roll business there's a path you can follow. But in our end
of the business there isn't a path. So we're trying to organize some data on who the
players are and where you can find the players."
Davidsen feels that things are moving ahead nicely at the moment, with more new
members on the way, and a firm plan of attack being formulated.
"The first thing we're doing is establishing a membership base; the second
thing we want to do is establish an awards
program, not necessarily a physical program, but some sort of recognition given to some of the people in this business."
According to Davidsen, FEPRA hopes
