The Menil Collection ac-commodates art from around the world in a 30,000 square feet of gal-lery space designed by Ren-zo Piano. Owners proposed an addition to the Menil Campus for delicate draw-ing sketches recognized as The Drawing Institute. Our studio was invited to trial run the programming of a cafe, auditorium, bookstore, and gallery space for sensi-tive materials. This project is contain group work from myself and collegues Jona-thon Scolaro and Brandon McLaughlin.

The design concept adopted the lightweight construction of the Me-nil Collection by envisioning two light boxes soaring over an invis-ible structure. The first floor is com-posed of a structural silicone glazed mullion system placed in the book-store and cafe.

The site embraces a shade struc-ture built from transluscent fiber-glass panels beyond The Drawing Institute. To present drawing sensi-tive material, installations of metal perforated screens line the entire second floor. Natural light is con-trolled through coffered ceilings to produce a delicate wash of illumina-tion. During the night, the galleries expose the steel structure when lit.
