The Learning Disability and Mental Health Self Assessment

Framework

We had a checklist of things that Pennine Care must do.

We already knew that mental health services and learning disability services needed to work together better.

One of the people mentioned in the MENCAP report

“Death by Indifference” had lived in Bury.

The Board of Pennine Care wanted to make sure that services were getting better.

1. Accessible information – making information about your stay in hospital easier for you to understand

2. Reasonable Adjustments – when hospital staff know your needs and try to meet them

3. Service users involved in developing services – having your say at every stage

4. Hospital staff understand the Mental Capacity Act – the law about your rights, choices and decisions

5. There is a named person who has a good understanding of your needs and can help ward staff to help you.

That person is the “Learning Disability Champion”

6. Safe and effective care – checking that things are right, and finding out why things go wrong

What did we find out from the checklist?

We need to…

We are making improvements!

We present Learning Disability Awareness Training to hospital staff.

We have started using the “Traffic Light Assessment”.

This contains important information and advice about each patient with a learning disability going into hospital.

We make and use accessible information.

We have a Learning Disability webpage.

There is a “Learning Disability Champion” at each hospital.

Mental health services and learning disability services have agreed how we will work better together.
