The work picture is showing glimmers of improvement. We have been adding to our backlog
each month for the last 5 months, which is encouraging There are also a number of projects
that are coming out in the next 12 to 18 months. This has been the longest and deepest
recession I’ve experienced in my 39 years working in the industry. I’ve heard the comment
that the construction industry has gone from a depression to a recession and I agree with that
assessment. The positive is that we appear to be slowly growing again.
There are some silver linings to this cloudy atmosphere. One of them is that the industry is
changing the way projects are being delivered. The way a project is delivered currently is that
it goes through a number of steps. The design is partially created, budgeted, completed, bid,
awarded, redesigned for constructability, coordinated, and then built. This process is not only
expensive, but also increases the time it takes to complete the project. Some of the more
progressive owners and construction managers are moving towards bringing in a team that
gets involved earlier, bringing in their expertise to the project, participating in the design,
constructability and coordination. This allows for a better design, true BIM, and a more
cooperative environment to build for the overall benefit of the project.
Another change that we are taking part in is the offsite assembly of parts of the building.
Basically how this works is that a section of the building is put together in a warehouse using
racks and then the racks are delivered to the project in one section and crane lifted into place.
We are participating in and embracing both of these new methodologies. Our reputation,
experience, and especially our team make us the type of company that progressive owners and
construction managers look for to participate in being part of their team.
We are looking forward to working with Joe Nigro, who is becoming the President of the
International Sheet Metal Workers Union this July. It is our sincere hope that he addresses
the growth and acceptance of non-union and especially multiple SMWIA unions in New Jersey
covering the same territory. This is more frustrating to me than the non-union as the
international union has the power to resolve this problem, which is hurting our industry. I
urge all of you to write to Joe and let him know how the Local 22 union is negatively impacting
you and your future. All of our union members need to take an active role in their union,
supporting their leaders to make the changes necessary to make us more competitive. Now
more than ever, we need the union to support the need to change and meet the demands of the
marketplace. We need customers to buy our product and we need to provide value. The
contractors and union need to truly work together to be more productive.
In closing, let’s not forget to work safely. Construction is an especially dangerous industry and
you need to be vigilant, for yourselves, coworkers and family. Remember - “No Excuses”

Bonland’s commitment to safety is the responsibility of each employee. Our accident free
goal requires a Team effort. We ask that each member of our Team always work safely and
make every effort to assist your co-workers to work safely. Following is a summary of our
2010 safety successes and areas for improvement.
Our safety incentive program is one method that we have found to be
successful in recognizing our employees for working safely. In January
2011, 136 employees were recognized with a knit hat for working acci-
dent free in 2010. Also during 2010, various employees were recog-
nized with safety shirts for reasons such as demonstrating safe be-
havior, proper use of fall protection, working in tight conditions, and
their overall safety record.
Congratulations to each of you!
We applaud the efforts of our managers and foremen in supporting our company safety
program. During 2010, our Team has done an excellent job on tool box talks, safety obser-
vation tours, new hire training as well as many other safety practices. Our safety program
has been put in place to ensure our employee’s well being and our Team embracing our
safety culture is critical to our success.
While the above successes are commended, as a company we had a total
of 18 injuries of which 3 incurred lost time and 4 restricted our em-
ployee’s ability to perform regular duty. The majority of injuries were
cuts, eyes, and falls from the ground surface. With more attention on
working safely and ensuring that we never become complacent, we can
improve this safety record and reach our goal in 2011.

After working in the Architectural field for the last
year and seeing how things are done from another
vantage point, I decided to return to my roots, my
friends and my family. During my leave several
things have changed at Bonland. A new Welty was in
the process of being installed in the NNJ Branch
utilizing 6’-0” lengths, which was one of the first in
the area. Now, we have a second Welty Machine in
the NYC Branch. We also added 2 more branches,
one in Pennsylvania and a fully operational shop in
NYC. A new scheduling system called “BonTrak” was
just in the developmental stages and is now being
used instead of the old “Priority Schedule.” Many of
my fellow co-workers have retired over the past
several years, but many remain along with a few new
faces.
On the CAD (Computer-aided design) side, the use
of Medusa has been replaced by PractiCAD, along
with the use of AutoCAD. Viewing things in 3D was
something that you saw in a movie, and today you can
view CAD drawings in 3D automatically with our pro-
grams. BIM (Building Information Modeling) was
never in the equation and now it’s common for over
75% of the projects that are awarded and that
number is growing.
My new role in the company is to coordinate the Drafting effort for all 4
Branches and to standardize the process, train and to look for futures leaders.
This is not going to happen overnight, but with everyone working as a TEAM and
your input will help the entire process.
In looking thru some of my old “Bonland Sheet Metal” archives, I found an article
called “The job of a Draftsman” that probably dates back 40-50 years. This arti-
cle states “The basic responsibility which the draftsman must fulfill is to provide
the information needed to permit fabrication and installation of our work as
quickly and as effectively as possible.” The drafting process has changed, due to
the computer technology, but the end result remains the same. I will be coming
around in the next couple of weeks visiting the different Branches and jobsite
locations. Your feedback is critical in making our Drafting Departments the
Leader in the Industry.

PENNSYLVANIA BRANCH NEWS
It has been almost two years since the PA branch officially opened for business
and in that time we have managed to develop relationships with many of the Penn-
sylvania contractors.
Matt Mitchell, SJ Sales Representative, has split his time in
sales between South Jersey and Pennsylvania and has done a
very good job of selling Bonland to our customers. Bidding
activity is still strong and consists of a wide variety of pro-
jects from hospitals to public work.
Mike Seifried has joined our staff as a PA Sales Representative. Mike comes to us with a
strong mechanical background; his addition will enable us to cover a larger territory and a greater number of
contractors.
John Bansley, SJ Project Manager, has taken the responsibility
for developing the PA Drafting Department. John will oversee the
drafting department in addition to his duties as a SJ Project Man-
ager. John will insure that all draftsmen are receiving the train-
ing required and that our systems are up to date and functional.
Tim Convery, John Farrace and Mike Rockwood have recently
joined our drafting department; each comes to us with a wealth of
experience.
Darlene McCann, SJ Project Leader, has been oversee-
ing the PractiCAD and BIM training. We are currently
drawing the Homewood Suites, an 11 story apartment
building in Philadelphia, Chestnut Hill Hospital Emergency
Department Expansion, Virtua Medical Office Building
Fit-Out and the King of Prussia Mall Renovation.
In the field, Larry Donoher, SJ Foreman, has been providing the
training to our PA Foreman. Paul Fuerst, PA Journeyman, is com-
pleting the Germantown Academy, Tom Tancredi, PA Foreman-In-Training, is working on St. Monica’s Manor and Andy Buchannan,
PA Journeyman, is completing the first phase of the Lankenau
Hospital Central Sterile Renovation.

retired. Nick had been with Bonland
for 25 years.

which honored their twenty-five and

the Karl Weinberg Scholarship

Dear John Hoffmann,
I wanted to thank you again for the tickets to the Local 19 Dinner Dance. Attached is a picture of my girlfriend and I sitting at the Bonland table. This picture is the first thing you see on the homepage of Local 19's website.
I also wanted to express to you how impressed I am with the
work ethic and professionalism that Bonland exhumes. From
working as a Sheet Metal Worker for over 10 years, I thought
I had tin knocking down to a science.
Larry Donoher, from day one, has shown me a faster and
more efficient way of performing every aspect of the job. He
holds such a high level of respect and belief in all of his work-
ers, a trait I have never witnessed before in a foreman. He
finds the good in everyone, then brings the best out of them.
Larry is one of those guys that's always ten steps ahead. He
is a great mentor for everyone to aspire to be and look up to.
I am very excited and proud to work for Larry Donoher and
Bonland.

South Jersey Branch
We are slowly coming out of a steep downturn in construction at the Bonland South Jersey
Branch. It was not too long ago, it appeared that work in Atlantic City would provide plenty
of opportunities for many years. With the downturn in the economy and the success of gam-
bling in other states, these opportunities disappeared as fast as they had materialized.
Fortunately, for Atlantic City, our new Governor has committed to keeping gambling at this
one location in the state and has granted The Revel organization substantial tax benefits, so
funding has once again been restored to this mega resort. In addition, Atlantic City’s tour-
ism district will be under state control and legislation allowing smaller casinos has been ap-
proved. There has also been some change in ownership of several properties that should
translate into work for the construction trades, so there is hope in this marketplace.
Elsewhere around the state the work picture is still cloudy and we are
not yet out of the recession. We have landed a few projects like the
Princeton Seminary Library and the New Student Housing at Rut-
gers, but overall there is still a small amount of work that is being bid.
During the recent downturn, Bonland has managed to stay busy at the
new Capital Health project in Pennington, employing upwards of 55
sheet metal workers on this one jobsite. John Wytanis, SJ Project Manager, Mike Andrejco, SJ Foreman and crew have managed a very
complicated project with a fast track schedule.
We have been able to utilize our Project Managers to help out with running work in the Pennsylvania Branch and
have used some of our foremen to train new foremen in Local 19. The Local 19 work has created work for our
drafting department and shop, although that did not mean that reassignments and rotations were not necessary.
We must continue to strive to do our best every day, so that we can remain competitive with other companies and
fight the non-union threat that we compete against on all too many projects. In the words of John Wooden, the
famous College Basketball Coach—“Perform at your best when your best is required. Your best is required each
day.”

suddenly on Monday,
January 17, 2011.
Joe worked for our South Jersey Branch
between 1997 and 2011.
Joe will be deeply missed.
I have had the pleasure of working with Joe Ruggeri for the last seven years. Joe was never short on enthu-siasm and loved a challenge.
I enjoyed hearing Joe’s stories, which he had a million of, you could really learn some valuable life lessons from his experiences.
When we started the Pennsylvania Branch, Joe was one of the first to offer his services and to help in any way possible for the branch to be successful. Joe was true to his word, he was there whenever we needed a boost on a job or to assist in training the men in the field.
I consider myself fortunate to have known Joe, he was a great worker, a truly enjoyable character and an even better person.

“Queen of Hearts”, the middle school
equivalent of high school’s “Homecoming
Queen”.
To be eligible, the student must meet all academic and
extracurricular criteria, write an essay, and a letter of
recommendation from a teacher must be presented to
the board. The field is then narrowed to the final five,
who must attend a formal dinner with
judges as well as partake in private inter-
views.
Brittany was overjoyed when the announce-
ment was made, at the subsequent dance,
that she was named this year’s queen.
