Met PGA Holiday Schedule

On behalf of all our staff, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the membership and wish you and your families a wonderful holiday, very happy Christmas and a healthy and successful New Year in 2015. As is our custom, the Met PGA Office will be closed from Tuesday, Dec. 23rd through Friday, Jan. 2nd. However, during that time all of the staff will be checking voicemail and emails regularly and obviously can and will respond to any important business.

Please Give Thanks to our Partners & Sponsors

There is a link on the web site for a listing of our Partners and Sponsors and ask at this time of year that you please add these Partners and Sponsors to your list to say thank you and recognize their support. A simple card, a handwritten note or even an e-mail or a tweat acknowledges your appreciation for all they do for our professionals and our Section. We are fortunate to have such a great group of Partners and Sponsors but we have to let them know that their involvement does not go unnoticed. The Partner and Sponsor list is also included at the end of this newsletter.

Dec. 4th is Deadline for TaylorMade Met PGA Assistant of the Year Applications

It is time for the selection of our 2014 TaylorMade Assistant of the Year Award, a difficult assignment with the talent among our area assistants that are such an integral part of the Met PGA. In addition to all the 2014 Gene Borek Squire Cup Applicants, we will also consider any assistants or apprentices who complete the nomination form and return it to the Met PGA no later than Dec. 4th. The Board will select the TaylorMade Assistant of the Year at their next meeting just prior to the holidays.

Sprague & Levy Ascend While Suzy Whaley Elected Secretary at PGA Annual Meeting

The PGA Annual Meeting was held in Indianapolis in mid-November and included the election of a new Secretary of the Association. Suzy Whaley of Farmington, Connecticut was elected on the first ballot as she garnered a majority of votes over fellow candidates Russ Libby of North Florida and Michael Haywood of the Southwest Section. Whaley will join the governing triumvirate of President Derek Sprague of the Northeastern NY Section and Vice-President Paul Levy of Southern California. Allen Wronowski will serve a second two-year term as Honorary President. In addition to the election, the meeting included a night of honoring the 2014 Special Awards recipients as that program reverts back to the Annual Meeting instead of being held during the PGA Show. There also was a video address by Rudy Giuliani to kick off the business gathering, a presentation by Anna Liotta about the changing culture and demographics of the millennials and Donald Trump was in Indianapolis to discuss the state of the golf industry. In other business there was a total of 28 resolutions that were passed by the delegation, most of which were mainly to clean up language and clarify current constitutional policies. The one resolution that was introduced for debate on the floor will eliminate the requirement of working for an A-1 PGA Member in order to eventually be elected to membership. Although our Section was opposed, this resolution carried by a comfortable margin.

The Spirit of Giving Exemplified in Junior Golf Fundraisers and Patriot Day Contributions We are still receiving donations from the many professionals who supported our 2014 Met PGA Junior Golf Fund-Raisers but did want to acknowledge those who stepped forward once again. It is heartwarming to realize how many professionals and their members appreciate our efforts on behalf of the more than 1300 kids who participate on our 115 event Junior Tour along with our continuing commitment and financial support of the First Tee of Metropolitan New York. What may be more impressive, however, is the incredible effort on behalf of Folds of Honor and Patriot Golf Day. The final tally is not yet official but it appears that the Met Section may again raise over $400,000.00 in 2014. Special events at Rolling Hills and Quaker Ridge along with the continuing commitment of so many great Patriots helped us to maintain this incredible level of support. Click here for our Titleist raffle winners that were selected at the Fall Meeting. Before the end of the month we will be posting our leading contributors for both Junior Golf and Patriot Golf Day on the web site to acknowledge their efforts and support of these two important initiatives.

Winter Education Series Starts Up on January 8th with Steve Scott Presentation - Golf Swing Symposium with Brian Manzella and Michael Jacobs at Wykagyl on Dec. 16th

Vision 54 Coaching for the Future Program in Florida in January Our 5th year of the Met PGA Winter Education Series will get under way on January 8th with a program featuring Steve Scott of Paramount CC presenting on “Preparing Yourself and Your Students for Optimum Results.” We will be posting the schedule of programs in our January Newsletter as the Committee is just finalizing some venues and dates at this time. The schedule will include programs on Thursdays (Jan 8th, 15th, Feb. 5th, 12th, 26th and March 5th and 12th) The emphasis will be on teaching topics and these programs will also provide our professionals with an opportunity to visit a variety of indoor facilities, including several new venues. If you are going to be in the New York area throughout the winter, we know you will enjoy and benefit from these programs. An additional opportunity for those who are here in December will pair Michael Jacobs of Rock Hill (our 2012 Met PGA Teacher of the Year) and Brian Manzella top instructor on both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine’s lists) at Wykagyl Country Club for a full day program – their 2nd Annual Golf Instruction Symposium. They will be joined by Matt Rudy, Golf Digest Senior Writer and Mike Granato, swing catalyst and Foresight expert. Fee is $200.00 and includes breakfast and lunch. Click here to register and for more details. Sturgeon Caps Off 2014 with a Win at PGA National Car Rental Assistants Championship – Shawn Baker Stars at PGA Senior Professional Championship

As we have already documented, Grant Sturgeon of Winged Foot closed out an exceptional year with a win at the National Car Rental PGA Assistants Championship after Sectional victories in the MasterCard Westchester PGA, Met Open and National Car Rental Met PGA Assistants Championship. That cemented his Section Player of the Year and an OMEGA watch with an Assistants Player of the Year title also. Ben Polland of Deepdale tied for 5th and Frank Bensel of Century was tied for 7th while four others made the cut and finished inside the top 50 including Scott Ford of North Hills and Nick Bova of Friars Head (T-40th), Anthony Aruta of Staten island Practice Center (T-43rd) and Joe Gothmann of Ardsley (T-49th). In the Senior Professional Championship Shawn Baker of The Greens at Half Hollow was the star of the Section with a tie for 12th place. He and Bobby Heins of Old Oaks (T-30th), both earned a spot in the May 2015 PGA Senior Championship at French Lick while Mark Mielke (T-39th) won the 5th alternate slot in a playoff. At the TaylorMade Pro-Am in Los Cabos, Mexico Brian Gaffney of Quaker Ridge GC was our Section’s low finisher (T-8th). Saint Andrew’s Golf Club’s Greg Bisconti also cracked the top 25. At the Web.Com Tour Qualifying, we had a number of familiar names qdvance to the 2nd stage of qualifying but only Cameron Wilson, David Pastore and Marc Turnesa were successful in reaching the final stage of qualifying in the finals from Dec. 11-16 at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens We were of course disappointed that our two senior professionals, Craig Thomas and Charlie Bolling who advanced to the Champions Tour Final Qualifying stage did not earn their cards although the Champions Tour is arguably the hardest of all the various tours to qualify for. Craig (T-12th) lost out in a playoff for Conditional status so both he and Charlie (T-30th) will be exempt from pre-qualifying and eligible to Monday qualify for any Champions Tour event in 2015. Congratulations to Craig and Charlie for making it to the final stage. Danny Balin continues to play well on the PGA Tour Latino America with a 10th place finish this past weekend. The 2014 PGA Tournament Series Presented by GOLFADVISOR is underway starting on Dec. 1st & 2nd with the first event at the Ryder Course in PGA Golf Village. Event #2 (Dec. 4-5) moves to The Wanamaker Course; Event #3 (Dec. 8-9) at the Dye Course; event #4 (Dec. 11-12) back at Ryder; event #5 (Dec. 15-16) at Wanamaker and finishing up with event #6 (Dec. 18-19) at Dye. . The PGA series will have an added $9,000.00 for each purse.
