This specificationis approvedfor use byall Departmentsand Agenciesof the Depart-ment of Defense.
1. SCOPE
,. 1.1 &9J2z. This specification covers the general re-quirements for airborne electronic eauipment for operation primarily inpiloted aircraft. The detail perfo=suce and tes~ requirementsfor aparticularequipmentshallbe as specifiedin the detail specificationforthat equipment.
1.2 Classification. The electronic equipment for whichthe general requirementsfor design and manufactureare.outlinedshallbeof the followingclasses,as specified(see 6.2):
class 1 - Equipmentdesignedfor 50,000 ft. altitudeand contiguoussea level operationoverthe temperaturerange of -54° to +55°C(+71°Cintermittentoperation).
Claas 1A - Equipmentdesignedfor 30,000 ft. altitudeand continuoussea level operationoverthe temperaturerange of -548 to +55°C(+71°Cintermittentoperstioii).

3.1,1.1.5 Samplesrequiredfor partsand materialapprovals.Sampleaof nonstandardpartaand materi.alamay be requiredby the procuringactivity.These samplesshallbe submittedin quantitiesand to the destina-tion apecified by the procuringactivityfor testsand examination, Samplequantitiesto be specifiedwill not exceed 1 ounce or 6 squareinchesofany materislor 3 feet of wire or 3 units of any otherpart, excepttransform- ;ers, microcircuits,delaylines,blowers,and power tubessuch aa magnetrons .and klystrons,where1 unit is aufficient. Sampleparts and materialsmaybe testedto destructionby the procuringactivityand will not be returnedto the contractor,When there ia more than one supplierfor a part orinaterial,parta or materialafrom each suppliershallbe consideredforseparatesubmission.
3.1.1.2 Uae of militarypart identifiers.Partswhich requireQPL approval,but whichhave no qualifiedvendors,shallnot be identifiedwith militarypart numbers.
3.1.1.3 Choiceof parts and materials. Wheneveran applicablespecificationprovidea❑ore than one characteristicor tolerancefor anitem, the equipmentmanufacturershall use in the equipment,items ofbroadestcharacteristicsand of the grestestallowabletolerance thatwillfulfill the performancerequirementsof the equipment. When acceptableitamaof higherthanmiuinnuaqualityare readilyavailable,the utilizationof which wouldnot increasethe initialor life cyclecoat to tbe procnringactivity,they may be used. When ❑aximumphysicaldimensionsof an‘itemare indicatedin the applicablespecificationfor the item,all new equipmentshall be designedto accommodatethe maximumphysicalsize specifiedinorder that all parts having the same type designationwill be physicallyinterchangeablein the equipmeut.
3.1.1.4 Replaceabilityby standardparts and materiala. When- .everpermissionis grantedby the procuringactivityfor a contractorto useitems not in accordancewith standardspecificationsfor which approved

because of nonavailabilityof standard items, the;ontractorsha~l arr~ngethe equipmentto permitreplacementin the fieldof the nonstandardby the standarditems. The standard item shall belistedin the technicalmanualsas the preferredreplacement.
3.1.1.5 Equipmentperformance. The requirementsof this speci-ficationwith regardto the use of parts,materials,and procesae$,eitherstandardor approvednonstandard,shall not relievethe contractorof theresponsibilityfor complyingwith all equipmentperformanceand otherre-quirementsset forth in the detail equipmentspecification,or contract.Approvalsfor nonstandardparts and materialsare contingent.on Subsequentsatisfactoryperformanceduringpreproductionand qualityconformancetestsand other requiredequipmenttests.
3.1.1.6 Substitutionof parts. The selectionand applicationof substituteparts shall be h accordancewith MIL-STD-454,Requirement72.
3.1.2 Capacitors: Capacitorsshall be in accordancewithHIL-STD-454,Requirement2.
3,1.3 Metal castings. Metal castingsshallbe in accordancewith MIL-STD-454,Requirement21.
3.1.4 Electricalconnectors. Electricalconnectorsshallbein accordancewith MIL-STD-454,Requirement10.
>3.1.4.1 Mountingof electricreceptacles. Where practical,
when receptaclesare mounted.on a verticalsurfacethe largestpolarizing.or prime key or keywayof the receptacleshallbe at the top centerof theshell of the receptacle.
3.,1.4.2 Adjscent locations. The use of identicalconnectorsinadjscent locationsshall be avoided. When the:use of comectors of thesame shell size.in adjscent locationscannotbe avoided,differencesinkeyingarrangementshallbe used to preventmismating.
3.1.5 Controls Controlsshall be in accordancewith MIL-STD-454,Requirement~”

3.1,!5.4 Ranges of adjustablecomponents. The electroniccir-cuitry shallbe designedto providea reservein the adjustmentrange fromthe nozmal adjustmentsetting of all variable componentsthat requireadjustmentduringoperationor maintenance. This adjustmentrange shallbesufficientto compensatefor compositevariationswhich may developiu theassocistedcircuitrybecsuse of normal changes in part values during tieapecified life cycleof the equipment. The adjustmentrangeshall alsobecapable of compensatingfor variationsresulting”from replacementwithparts within the tolerance apecified.
3.1.6 Corrosionresistance. Materialashallbe of corrosion-resistanttypesor shallbe processedto resistcorrosion.
3.1.6.1 Materials. Gold,nickel,chromium,rhodium,tin, lead-tin alloys,or sufficientlythickplatingsof thesemetals,are satisfactorywithoutadditionalprotectionor treatmentother thsn buffingor cleaning.
3.1.6.2 Ferrousalloys. Ferrousalloys shallhe in accordancewith MIL-STD-454,Requirement15,
3.1.6.3 Aluminumalloy.
3.1.6.3.1 Surface,general. Parts fabricatedfrom aluminum1100,alloya 3003, 5052, 6053, 6061, 6063, or 7072 shall be cleanedwith a de-oxidizingsolution,otherthan an uninhibitedcausticdip, aod may be usedwith or withontother surfacetreatment. Other aluminumalloys shall beanodizedin accordancewith MIL-A-S625or be given a chemical.treatmentinaccordancewith MIL-C-5541.
3.1.6.3.2 Surfaces,bondedand grounded. Wherebondingor ground-ing ia neccsaary,aluminum1100,alloys3003,5052, 6053,6061,6063, 7072,or equally corrosion-resistantalloys, shall be used. They may be usedwithoutother snrface treatment.
3.1,6,3.3 Aluminumsurfaces,extremewear resistant. Wherebonding or groundingia not necessacy,hard anodic finiaheaconformingtonumbersE514, E515, or E516 of MIL-F-14072may be appliedto obtainextremewear-rasiatantsurfaceaunder Type II (MIL-F-14072)erposure on desiredareas of aluminumalloys not aubject to repeatedhigh tensilestresses.
* 3.1.6.4 Cadmium-plating.Cadmiumplatingshallbe in accordancewith MIL-STD-454,Requirement15,
3.1,6.5 Magneaiumand ma~neaiumalloya. Magnesiumand magnesiumalloysshallnot be used exceptwhen approvedor specifiedby the procuringactivity. The requestfor use of magneaiumand ita alloysshouldincludethe total environmentespoaure,the weight reductionand Otheradvantagesachieved, the proposed surface treatment,and the applicationdetaila.

3.1.6.6 Zinc and zinc-platedparts. Zinc and zinc-platedpartsshallbe givena bichromatetreatmentin accordancewith QQ-Z-325,Type II,class 2.
3.1.7 Dissimilarmetals. Selectionand protectionof dissimilarmetal combinationsshallbe in accordancewith llIL-STD-454,Requirement16.
3.1.8 Finishes. Unless containedin a hermetically“seale”dunit, part finishes~ing hardwareitemsof equipmentnot coveiedbysubsidiaryspec’ifications),shallbe resistantto corrosion. Finishesshallbe capableof withstandinga 48”hour Salt Spray (Fog)test in accordancewith ASTM B-117 withoutshowingsignsof corrosionbeyondthoseestablishedfor the particularpart, material,or finishspecification.Whereappli-cable, these parts shall have finishesprovidingsnitablerates of heattransfer. Parts which are lubricatedin equipmentmay be tested in alubricatedcondition. Lusterlessfinishesshallbe ‘usedon all surfacesvisible to operatingperson.uel.Where cleaningoperationson metslpartsare not specifiedin detail,they shall.be in accordancewith MIL-S-5002.It is not the intentthat parts procuredto the specificationslistedinAppendixA must be refinished.
3.1.8.1 Casesand frontpanels. Equipment installed in thecockpitarea shallbe LusterlessBlack,.Color‘No.37038 in accordancewithFED-STD-595. Finishof all otherequipmentshallbe LusterlessGrayColorNo. 36231,in accordancewith FED-8TD-.595.
3.1.8.2 .Fastenersand assimblyscrews. Exposed surfaces ofexternalfastenersand assemblyscrewsused in areasotherthan the cockpitwhich are manipulated,loosened,or removedin the normal processesofservicingand installingthe equipmentshallbe finished,preferablyin anoncorrosiveblack or brightfinish,,so as to providestrongcOntraStwiththe color of the surfaceupon which they appear. Exposedsurfacesof ex-ternalfastenersand assemblyscrews“usedin the aircraftcockpitshrillbefinishedin accordancewith 3.1.g.1. Otherexternalfastenersand assemblySCGWS used for securingthe’internalparts,to the chassisshallbe SiMilarin colorto the surfaceupon which they appear.

To identifyproperly,de-viationsin articleaof equipmentresultingfrom engineeringchangeproposalspreparedby tbe contractorand approvedby the procuringactivity,markingOf one of the followingcategoriesshallbe aasignedfor use on each majoror minor assemblyin which the changehaa been incorporated:
a. A changein the type designationof the articleaaincludedin a nameplateor other❑arking.

4.4 Quality conformancetesta. a. Individualtests: Individualtesta shall be per-formed on each equipment submitted for acceptanceunder the contract.
b. Ssmpling tests: Equipment submitted for samplingtests shall be selected by the contractor underthe supervisionof the Governmentinspector,shallbe representativeof currentproduction, and shallfirst hsve passed the individual tests. Thequantity of sample tests to be performed shall beas specified in the detail specificationor thecontract.
4.5 Test procedures. The proceduresand methods for perform-ing all tests specified herein shall be as stated in the detail equipmentspecification,or if not stated therein, shell be prepared by the contractorand sent to the procuring activity for approval. In the later case, thecontractor shall have obtained approval from the procuring activityprior‘to aubmisaionof equipmentfor teats. The right ia reserved by the procur-ing activity to require additional tests to determine”compliancewith,therequirements of this and the detail equipment specificationswhen it isdeemednecessary,
4.6 Presubmissiontesting. No item, part, or completeequipment shall be submittedto the Government inspectorby the Contractoruntil it has been previously tested and inspected.by the contractor andfound to comply to the best of his knowledge and belief with all applicablerequirement, With the~consent of the contractorand at the discretionof
‘the procuring activity,this prior test and inspectionmay be participated -in or witnessed by the Governmentinspector with the.object of eliminatingthe necessity of repeatingsuch teat and inspectionafter the equipmenthaabeen formally submittedto the Government inspector.
4.7 Rajectionand reteat., The electronic equipment whichhas been rejected may be reworked or have parts replaced to correct thedefects, and resubmittedfor acceptance. Before resubmitting,,full particu-lars concerning previous rejection and the action-taken to correct thedefectsfound in the originalshall be furnishedby the Government inspector.Units rejected after retest shall not be resubmittedwitbout the apecific.-aPProval of the procuring activity,
