A real estatedevelopment firm withties to the Orlando areais proposing a newproject on InternationalDrive that would reachalmost as high as TheOrlando Eyeobservation wheelcoming out of theground just south ofthere. iSquare Mall & HotelDevelopment LLC, anentity related to TheBlackmine Group, isset to go before twocity of Orlando boardsnext month to seek theOK on its planned new31-story megamall andhotel- one that wouldbe topped with anobservation deck androtating restaurant atthe corner of I-Driveand Kirkman Road. The proposed iSquareMall and hotel complexwould feature an iceskating rink, food courtand rotating restaurant,along with 160,210square feet of retail,48,418 square feet ofmeeting rooms, 1,253hotel rooms in twotowers and a nine-levelparking garage thatwould alsoaccommodate bicycles,city documentsshowed. Though it may seem asthough this projectcame out of thewoodwork, architectRay Scott said he'sbeen involved in thisproject for much longer."I've been working onthis with the [FederalAviation Administration]

Scottsaid the project isbeing planned to go ashigh as about 400 feet,with itscommunications towerreaching a height ofabout 450 feet. That would put theproject at just under the425-foot Orlando Eye,which is now underconstruction at the$200 million I-Drive360 entertainmentcomplex just south ofSand Lake Road. Chuck Whittall,president of I-Drive 360developer UnicorpNational DevelopmentsInc., said though hedoesn't see the iSquareproject as competition,he's interested inknowing more about it."It is very difficult tofinance a project likethis, and so we'recurious to see how itgoes," Whittall said inan emailed response. Scott, however, addedthat none of the plansare final until the cityhas a chance to weighin on what's beingproposed."Preliminarily, everyoneknows what we'reshooting for," he said."Once we getapproved, we'll starttightening things up abit."The project is slated togo before the city's
technical reviewcommittee on June 3and the municipalplanning board on June17.

Tourist tax collectionsin Orange Countytotaled $21,569,800 inMarch, a 3.3 percentincrease over theyear-ago period.Tourist taxes arecharged on short-termrentals, mostly hotelsand motels. "At the halfway point inour fiscal year, we aremore than 5 percentahead of the previousyear," said OrangeCounty ComptrollerMartha Haynie. "Although this is asmaller month-over-month increasethan earlier in thespring, the resort taxcontinues to representa robust hospitalityeconomy."Through March, touristtax collections totaled$102,871,200compared with$97,707,900 a yearago.
