TheMissouriAcademyofScience,MathematicsandComputing(MissouriAcademyorMASMC)isatwo-yearresidential,early-entrance-to-collegeschoolforacademicallytalentedandhighachievingstudents.TheschoolwasestablishedinAugust2000,whenitfirstopeneditsdoorstostudentsfromacrossthestateofMissouri(USA).Nowtheschoolenrollsmorethan150highschool11thand12thgraders,mostlyfromMissouri,butalsofromotherstatesintheUSAandothercountries.ItislocatedonthecampusofNorthwestMissouriStateUniversityinMaryville,Missouri.TheMissouriAcademyselectsstudentswhohavecompleted10thgradeattheirtraditionalhighschool,andtherefore,replacesthefinaltwoyearsoftraditionalhighschool.TheschoolcurriculumconsistsofalluniversitycourseworktaughtbyprofessorsatNorthwestMissouriStateUniversity.MissouriAcademystudentssitinthesameclassroomsside-by-sidewithtraditionaluniversitystudents,andprofessorshavethesamehighexpectationsofMissouriAcademystudentsastheydooftraditionaluniversitystudents.StudentswhosuccessfullycompletetwoyearsatthisschoolreceiveahighschooldiplomaandanAssociateofSciencedegree.Itisanopportunityforhighperformingandtalentedstudentstoliveandstudyinaliving/learningcommunityofpeers.Thisschoolisoneofonlysevenschoolsofitskind(i.e.residentialearly-collegeprogram)inthenation,andtheonlyoneinMissouri.Bymostmeasures,theschoolhasbeenverysuccessfulsinceitsinceptioninAugust2000.

Allcoursesareregularuniversitycoursestaughtbyuniversityprofessors.MissouriAcademystudentssitinthesameclassroomswithtraditionaluniversitystudents,andtheclassroom/courseworkexpectationsarethesameforallstudents.

MissouriAcademystudentsarerequiredtotakeallthe‘requiredcommoncore’courses(thelefttable),thentheyarealsorequiredtopickoneofthefourtracks(blocksontherightside):

STUDENT LIFENorthComplexistheMissouriAcademyresidentialbuildingrightinthemiddleoftheuniversitycampus.ThisbuildingisthehomeoftheMissouriAcademy.ItcontainsallthehousingforMissouriAcademystudentsaswellasstaffoffices.Eachofthestudentresidencefloorshasoneortwolive-inResidentialCounselors(RC).AnRCisanadult,withatleastabachelor’sdegreeandknowledgeableaboutworkingwithadolescentteenagers,andmustpassbackgroundcheckstobecertifiedtowork.ThefunctionofanRCistoenrichthestudents’personal,social,emotionalandacademicgrowth.AnRCisamentorandsupervisor.AnRCcommunicatesdirectlywithparentsregardingtheprogressandwell-beingofthestudents.

MissouriAcademystudentshaveaccesstoallfacilitiesandservicesonthecampusofNorthwestMissouriStateUniversity–theycanusetenniscourts,basketballcourts,gymnasium,soccerfields,thestudentunionandintra-muralactivities.Therearemanyotheracademicandnon-academicextra-curricularactivitiesavailableforallstudents.

BecauseMissouriAcademystudentsareunder-age,therearespecificrulesandpoliciesgoverningtheirday-to-dayliveswhiletheyareattheMissouriAcademy.Theserulesandpoliciesaredifferentfromthoseoftraditionaluniversitystudents.TheMissouriAcademystaffwillprovidetransportationtothelocalstores,airportandnearbycities/townsforavarietyofactivities.

Who is eligible to apply?TobeeligibletoapplytotheMissouriAcademyfortheClass of 2019,beginninginJuly2017,astudent/candidatemust:

n becurrentlyin9thor10thor11thgradeofhighschool,AND

n haveabirthdatein2000,2001or2002.

Students/candidatesin9thgradeofhighschoolwillbeconsideredonlyunderspecialcircumstances(seebelowforthespecialcircumstances).ThecurriculumattheMissouriAcademyisrigorousanddifficult,andconsistsofalluniversitycoursestaughtbyuniversityprofessorsatNorthwestMissouriStateUniversity.Therefore,studentsselectedtoattendtheMissouriAcademymustbeacademicallytalented,high-performingandmustbepreparedtoassumehighlevelofresponsibility.

What are the selection criteria used for admission?Evaluation/Selection Criteria

1. Evaluation of 9th - 10th grades (or equivalent) academic transcript

(25 points)

a.Applicantmusthavetakenorarecurrentlytakingthefollowingsubjectsandshowhighperformanceintheclassroom,i.e.mostly“A’s”andsome“B’s”orequivalentperformance:advancedmathematics,science(chemistry&biology),andEnglish.

b.Applicantsrankedinthetop5-10%aregenerallypreferable.

2. Score on the Missouri Academy Entrance Examination (MAEE)

(25 points)

Thisentranceexamhastwoparts:theEnglishsectionandtheMathematicssection.TheEnglishsectionis60minuteslongandcontainshasa‘Reading’sub-sectionandan‘Essay’sub-section.TheMathematicssectionisalso60minutesandcontains25multiple-choicequestions.

3. Performance at the Interview(20 points)

Thepurposeoftheinterviewistodeterminetheapplicant’sfacilitywiththeEnglishlanguage.Wewanttodeterminetheapplicant’slevelofcomfortwithconversationalEnglish.Wewillfocusonhowwelltheapplicantunderstandsthequestions/commentsandhowwellweunderstandtheapplicant’sresponses,commentsandexplanations.

4. TOEFL or IELTS (20 points)

TOEFLorIELTSScore:theapplicantmusthaveaminimumInternet-BasedTOEFL(iBT)scoreof75.Alternatively,theapplicantcantakeandsubmitanIELTSscore(minimumBand6.0).

5. Other Factors (10 points)

a.Evaluationsfromtwoteachers:TeacherevaluationsformscanbeobtainedfromtheMissouriAcademywebsiteathttp://www.nwmissouri.edu/masmc/PDF/App_TeacherAdmin.pdf.TheteacherswillcompletethemandsendthemdirectlytoDr.CleoSamudziasspecifiedontheevaluationforms.Nootherletterofrecommendationwillbeused.(5 points)

b.Theapplicantisexpectedtosubmitevidenceofawardsandhonorsreceivedduringthe9thand10thgradesONLY.(5 points)

Students/candidateswhoreceiveatotalscoreof70orhigher(inthefivecriteriaabove)willbeacceptedforadmissiontotheMissouriAcademy.TheMissouriAcademydoesnotrequireSATorACTscoresfrominternationalstudentsforselection/admissionpurposes.However,theMissouriAcademyrequiresthesetests(ACTorSAT)forthoseinternationalstudentsinterestedinapplyingfortheTWOpartialscholarshipsavailable.

Special Selection Criteria for 9th GradersStudents/candidateswhohaveonlycompleted9thgradeofhighschoolandwishtobeconsideredfortheClassof2019must:
