MIT SAE BAJA 2014-15

The BAJA SAE student challenge is a feted student competition that presents the

undergraduate engineering students with a challenging task of designing, fabricating

and validating an all terrain vehicle. The history of the event dates back to mid 70’s

when it originated in USA and since then it is conducted annually at several locations

across the globe, including USA, Mexico, Canada, India, South Africa, Brazil, and

South Korea, witnessing participation from prominent colleges around the world.

The BAJA SAE INDIA is successfully being held since 2007 at the NATRAX

(National Test Track) facility of NATRiP (National Automotive Testing & R&D

Infrastructure Project) situated at Pithampur, Indore in Madhya Pradesh.

MIT SAE BAJA Team – ‘Piranha Racing’ comprises of 25 dedicated auto-

enthusiasts students from Mechanical and Mechanical Sandwich working under the

guidance of Prof. C.D. Koshti and Prof. S.M. Bondar. They design, fabricate and

validate a single-seater four-wheeled off-road vehicle to take part in series of events

that test the vehicle for the sound engineering practices that have gone into it, the

agility of the vehicle in terms of gradeability, speed, acceleration and mobility

characteristics and finally its ability to endure a back-breaking durability test. MIT

PUNE has been an active participant in BAJA SAE INDIA since 2009.

In the Academic Year (2014-15) , the MIT BAJA team went International for the first

time by participating in BAJA SAE South Korea 2014 held from 3rd

to 5th July 2014

at Yeungnam University, Daegu.

The team returned with awards viz.,

Participation award,

International Friendship award

Cash prize of 2,00,000 South Korean Won for Overall performance.

The team also successfully participated in National BAJA SAE INDIA 2015 held

from 18th to 22

nd Feb 2015 at Pithampur (M.P.). Under the leadership of Lester

Benedict Pinto (Captain and Driver) and Bhavesh Shimpi (Vice-Captain), the team

won two awards in dynamic events

Suspension and Traction Test -2nd

prize (INR 50,000)

All India Overall 5th

Rank amongst 120 Teams
