It is hard to believe Fall is already here! After a very wet Spring and Summer I know I am ready for cooler temperatures along with new kids! Now, is a great time to look your herd over for feet that need trimmed, lice issues and catch-up on vaccinations. Finding time for routine health care in Fall helps to prevent issues in the Winter when goats spend a lot of time in close contact due to cold temperatures. Being prepared for the arrival of kids before the holidays makes life simpler and reduces the chances of problems! Now, is the time to stock up on heat lights and extra heat light bulbs along with making sure your lights are not only secure but have a secondary method of hanging. Goats spend
time pushing and shoving around the warmth of heat lights so make sure your lights will not fall and poten-tially cause a barn fire. The MGR office has been especially busy in 2015. It is exciting to see many of you getting caught up on past registrations. I want to thank all of you for your pa-tience in waiting on paperwork this year. 2015 seems to have been the busiest year to date! I have truly en-joyed seeing so many nice examples for the breed be-ing registered. Our Judges Training was held in Corydon, Indiana this year. I was impressed by the students who attended. While some were not ready to move on to be MGR Judges yet, I am appreciative of the dedication to the breed they presented at the Judges Training. I would like to congratulate our five newest MGR Judges; Vic Leas from Alabama, Rayna & Rusty Lee from Geor-gia, Jimmy Dowell from Kentucky, & Kristy Shearer from Ohio. As we certify new judges throughout the United States we move closer to the goal of closing our shows to the use of only MGR Certified Judges. I hope to see all of our judges continue to promote cor-rect Myotonic goats in order to preserve the breed. Show season is winding up for the 2015 season and I would like to thank all of those who have supported the shows and look forward to seeing many more ex-amples of the breed in the ring during 2016! ~Tara

ASSESSING LEVEL OF CONSCIOUSNESS
Editor’s Note: Any time you have a goat exhibiting neurological symptoms, immediate intervention can make the difference
between recovery and fatality. It is helpful if you can describe accurately to your veterinarian how the animal is behaving.
The chart below describes a method for assessing the level of consciousness in your animals.
*Pugh, D. G. editor, Sheep & Goat Medicine, W. B. Saunders Company, 2002, p 278.
Level Definition Behavior
Hyperexcitability Rage, mania, frantic motor activities Striking with front limbs, kicking, charging, excessive
vocalization, violent struggling, possibly normal behav-
ior
Alertness Conscious, observant, responding
appropriately to stimuli
Normal
Dementia Inappropriate responses to external stimuli Afraid of feed, running into walls, self-mutilation
Stupor Unresponsive to external stimuli;
responsive to painful stimuli
Droopy ears, holding head low, reluctant to move
Depression Reduced responses to external stimuli and
pain
Unwillingness to rise, lack of recognition, lack of
appetite, head pressing, propulsive walking
Coma No response to external or painful stimuli Recumbent, convulsions
Narcolepsy Episodic condition in which animals exhibit
stupor without motor activity
Rapid eye movement; after the episode animals return to
normal

IODINE DEFICIENCY
Iodine deficiency in goats causes changes in the thyroid gland, the organ which controls metabolism. Located under the chin on the front of the neck and behind the larynx, the thyroid gland enlarges to form a goiter when the goat is deficient in iodine. A goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland.
Goiters are not "bottlejaw," which is anemia that is almost always caused by a heavy wormload and occurs directly under the chin. Goiters are not Caseous Lym-phadenitis abscesses; CL abscesses occur at lymph glands and when located in the neck area will be under an ear, downward towards the chest, or along the jaw line. Do not confuse it with the "milk goiter" present in newborn and young kids of breeds of dairy heritage (including Boers); that is a thymus gland issue which usually goes away as the kid reaches puberty. Articles that I've written on each of these topics can be found on the Articles page at www.tennesseemeatgoats.com.
Goiters are often nutritionally related. Soils through-out much of the northern and eastern parts of the United States are iodine deficient. Plants of the Brassi-cas family interfere with iodine uptake by the thyroid gland. This includes plants in the mustard family such as cabbage, broccoli, and turnips. Supplemental iodine will not help correct iodine deficiency in goats eating these plants. You must eliminate them from the goat's diet. The tendency to produce goiters may be inher-ited; some Swiss breeds that have been linebred tend to carry abnormalities in thyroid function. The Boer goat breed seems to be susceptible to iodine deficiency, re-sulting in goiters.
Goiters can exist in newborn kids. Thyroid deficiency can cause stillbirths or kids can be born weak and hair-less or with very fine haircoats. Such kids are sluggish and grow poorly. They may or may not develop skin
lesions. Cobalt deficiency and its accompanying Vita-min B12 deficiency can also cause goiters.
Treatment for iodine deficiency that isn't caused by plants that prevent iodine uptake (see Brassicas family information above) is to add iodized salt to the goat's diet. Many prepared goat feeds use non-iodized mixing salt because the particles are small and mix well. The amount of organic iodine (EDDI) put into prepared feeds is controlled by the U. S. Food & Drug Admini-stration and is not adequate for some iodine-deficient areas. Severe iodine deficiency can be treated more quickly by painting 7% iodine on a hairless part of the goat's body such as the tailweb. Free-choice feeding of kelp -- dried seaweed -- is an excellent way to keep iodine levels up. Kelp isn't always easy to find and can be pricey but consumption per goat is small so overall cost should not be a major concern. A 50-pound bag of kelp lasts a long time and can be mixed with loose goat minerals to encourage consumption. Jeffers carries Thorvin Kelp, one of the best kinds. If you are fed-up with having goat berries inside of your 60 lbs. mineral/protein tubs, I have an idea for you. No more goat berries, no more goats walking in the tub, no more kids getting in the tub and getting sticky.
• First find a wooden post or wall where you would like to place the tub.
• Take an empty tub and screw it to the wall/post with several screws to make it sturdy.
• Now lift your new tub and push it tightly into the empty tub on the wall/post.
• Take a few short screws and screw them from the inside of new tub into the old tub keeping them under the lip of the new tub. Note: This only works for the heavy molasses type tubs. These are the ones that are really sticky. You would not want to use this method using the dry, crumbly type tubs as they will break and possibly harm a kid or your foot if it were to fall on it. To prevent any type of injury you may also want to place it closer to the ground and/or place a cinder block or something under and in front of it. If it were to fall out the block would possibly hold it or prevent a kid from being stuck under it. We usually only use these type of tubs before kidding begins. We feel they can help prevent ketosis in our does if used a month or two before they kid.

WELCOME NEW MGR BREEDERS
VOLUME 10, ISSUE 3
The Myotonic Goat Registry was formed in 2005 as a sole ownership registry by Gene McNutt with input from an initial Board of Advisors made up of Dr. Phil Sponenberg and Barbara Roberts. The current Board of Advisors includes Dr. Phil Sponenberg, Cindy Bene, Jason Duffy, Jan Likens and Dian Naumann. The owner and Board of Advisors will make decisions concerning the registry and its procedures. This method of governance is meant to provide Myotonic Goat breeders with a registry that will not have frequent changes, and will have the longevity and consistency needed to successfully promote the Myotonic Goat breed, while at the same time make it responsive to the needs and wishes of the breeders. In 2009, Gene retired and the registry was sold to Tara Lawrence. As the Myotonic Goat Registry grows, additional Board of Advisor members may be added in order to more broadly represent the breeders. The owner, along with the Board of Advisors, will be responsi-ble for providing for its own replacements and/or expansions.
The Myotonic Goat Registry takes into consideration all breeders, from pet owners to commercial meat growers. Regardless of which aspect of this breed appeals to you, the Myotonic Goat Registry is the place for all breeders to register their Myotonic Goats.
The Registry will help breeders promote their goats through sales, shows, and advertising, and will educate the public about the Myotonic Goat and its usefulness in a variety of settings.
