Editor’s Note
The end of the 2013 is fast approaching and soon we will be
celebrating Christmas, Kwanzaa and the New Years. It is a good
time to stop and reflect on the great things that 2013 has brought
us all. Our president got through his 5th year in office. The gay
community has seen victories in the striking down of DOMA
And Prop 8. Hawaii just became the 15th state to legalize
marriage between gay men and women. That’s almost a 3rd of
the country. And last but not least, Mocca Magazine will soon be
celebrating its first anniversary. I’m beyond proud of this this
accomplishment. And I hope to be able to share more exciting
news with you very soon.
But lets not forget that this is a time of year when many feel that
life is not worth living. The suicide rates always climb around the
holidays. So take some time out of your hectic holiday schedule
of parties and social events to think about those people in your
life that might need some cheering up during the holidays.
Spread that holiday spirit around and make sure that you are there
for your friends and family in need. Also try and do something
nice for someone you don’t know. Spread that holiday cheer
wherever you go. Many people become very lonely during the
holidays. Do what you can to cheer them up and let them know
that it will get better. That is the true spirit of the season.
Happy Holidays to each and every one of you!
And please feel free to send me any comments or suggestions

Best Man Holiday
After nearly 15 years apart, Taye Diggs,
Nia Long, Morris Chestnut, Harold
Perrineau, Terrence Howard, Sanaa
Lathan, Monica Calhoun, Melissa De
Sousa and Regina Hall reprise their career-
launching roles in The Best Man Holiday,
the long-awaited next chapter to the film
that ushered in a new era of comedy. When
the college friends finally reunite over the
Christmas holidays, they will discover just
how easy it is for long-forgotten
rivalries and romances to be ignited.
Malcolm D. Lee returns to write and
direct this sequel to his directorial
debut.
The Best Man sequel returned to the
theater with a vengeance. Since the
announcement that a sequel to the
original Best Man movie (produced in
1999) there has been major buzz around
this movie. As icing on the cake, all of

movies have returned for the sequel.
Reprising each of their roles was Taye
Diggs (Harper), Nia Long (Jordan),
Morris Chestnut (Lance) Harold

(Quentin), Sanaa Lathan (Robyn),
Monica Calhoun (Mia), Melissa De
Sousa (Shelby) and Regina Hall
(Candace). The original best man
movie grossed 9 million dollars at the
box office its opening weekend and came in
as the number one movie in the country.
The movie went on to earn $34.1 million
dollars at the box office during its run.
(That’s $54 million adjusted for inflation.)
The new movie “Best Man Holiday, while
opening November 15, 2013 against the
second week run of the blockbuster movie
“Thor: The Dark World” managed to snag
the second place spot. The Best Man
Holiday was estimated to earn roughly $16
-20 million its opening weekend. Those
estimates quickly started being
adjusted as the Friday theater estimates
stated to roll in. The Best Man Holiday
had actually beaten Thor in ticket sales
on Friday by a little more than
$100.000. There were suggestions that
it might topple Thor for the weekend’s
number one spot. Even though Thor
ended up with the top spot, the Best
Man Holiday came in a strong second,
only a few million dollars from the top
spot.

Once Upon A Time by Rafael Solece
Once upon a time in the southern most region of the land, there were two
neighboring kingdoms. The ruling families of these kingdoms had two
young princes; separated by only a year in age. Through the years the
two princes played together and became very close friends; until one day
the ruling family of the eldest prince disappeared. The youngest prince
was very sad and his mother saw this. So she cast a spell to help him
forget; and so he did. The youngest Prince grew up healthy and happy
enough, but a piece of him was always missing...
Fairy tales usually start off
something like that; very abstract,
pretty, and foreboding; but that
my friends is not a fairy tale. That
is actually a page from a chapter
in my life and although I made it
sound very pretty, the truth is
actually stranger and wilder than
fiction. There was a childhood
friend, he did just up and
disappear, and I was probably
very sad. However, there was no
spell, just youthful innocence
helped me to forget. But that is
hardly a fairytale, it is just life;
but for a person like me, it makes
for a great story and an even
awesome lesson.
Everybody wants the Fairy Tale; love at first sight, the knight in shining
armor, true love’s kiss, happily ever after, and all that jazz. Be you man
or woman, gay or straight; I don't care what you say. Those epic love
stories are the things that we wish for and dream about. I know I did.
Unfortunately, everybody forgets about all the bad stuff that happens in
fairy tales. We are so happy when the Prince saves the Princess that we
tend not to remember the evil queens, the poisoned apples, the death and
destruction that ensues. There are a lot of obstacles and battles that come
between the once upon a time’s and the happily ever after’s.
The Back of the Closet
30
Fairy tales ain't for the faint of heart. Hell they aren't even called fairy tales. The
fairy tales you know and love are actually called grim tales; because the happier the
ending the grimmer the tale. You have to be willing to go through the fire, slay the
dragon, and kill the evil queen if you want to gain access to the castle. That is what
all those fairy tales are trying to tell us. Life isn't always black and white or right
and wrong; and love isn't always neat and pretty. It’s usually followed up with a lot
of hurt and pain. But you need all that to make the story good, otherwise the story
wouldn't even be worth turning the page. A lot of us want the story simple. We
want to skip over the all the bad to get to the good. Especially when it comes to
loving someone. If loving someone was simple that would be boring and that ain't
the type of story I would want to read. Once Upon a Time he was in love and he
lived Happily ever after. Where is the fun in that?
Love should be messy and complicated. It should be filled with obstacles and there
should be lots of monsters and evil witches to fight. I don't want something for
nothing. I want to fight for it. I want to climb the highest mountain, swim the
deepest ocean, and fight the ogre. Especially if the love is worth it ; if it is meant to
be. And if you choose to let yourself love somebody then they should be worth
fighting the tough battles. If you honestly think about it, if there were only Once
Upon a Times then the Happily Ever Afters wouldn't be so wonderful. Why do girls
always go for the bad boys? Why do bad boys always go after the good girls?
Because bad boys ain't no good and the good girls have all the fun. Everybody likes
a good fight and the best fights are the ones that happen immediately after someone
tells you “NO”. There is something about that word that makes even the sheepish
of men brave and even the shyest of women out-going. The word NO makes you
want to fight; especially if someone tells you “no you can't love somebody”. It
makes you want to fight for it; it makes you want to fight hard. At least, it makes
me want to and I believe that is how we should all be.
Everybody wants that Once Upon a Time, but the Once Upon a Time comes with a
price. You have to be willing to fight to get to the Happily Ever After. The ending
of my story is still being written, but the highlights are; my childhood friend and I
eventually reconnect some twenty plus years later in the oddest of circumstances.
He has a boyfriend and I have a lifestyle, at the time that didn't seem like it
mattered that much. For months we were around each other not knowing our
connection, but our bond was steadily intensifying: and it was obvious to anyone
that knows me that something was happening between us. Eventually it was his
mother who would divulge our relationship and we discovered that our odd
attraction to each other predated our adult meeting. I don't know exactly what that
means for he or I, but I do know it’s a great once upon a time.

of eight one-hour episodes that will air on Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. on BET.
BET’s first one-hour scripted drama focuses on the life of successful cable news
anchor, Mary Jane Paul (played by
Gabrielle Union). She seems to have
it all; intelligence, drive, a beautiful
home, a fancy sports car, and a lavish
closet of designer shoes. Yet
something is missing from her
American Dream – a family of her
own.

past lovers, Andre (Omari Hardwick)

Meanwhile, changes are afoot at Mary
Jane’s cable network after an anchor

Mary Jane, Kara (Lisa Vidal) and
Mark (Aaron Spears) all fearing the
loss of their jobs. Moral dilemmas

Ask Aunt Pearl
Dear Aunt Pearl:
The Christmas holiday is approaching and I normally go home for the
holiday. My parents know that I’m gay and have never been
unaccepting of that fact. We actually don’t discuss it ever. I’ve been in
a relationship for the past 9 months and was thinking of bringing my
boyfriend home with me. My parents are used to the significant others
of my brothers and sisters. I told my sister about my plan and she has
advised me not to do it. She feels that even though my parents know
my sexual preference, they would not be comfortable with it in their
home over and extended holiday. I think that is time for them to start
getting used to it because I do want to be able to bring my boyfriend
or future husband to family gatherings. My boyfriend doesn’t have
the support of his family so he doesn’t have anywhere to go for the
holiday. I don’t want to leave him behind and I also really want to see
my family. It has been a full year since I’ve seen some of them. What
do you think I should do?
Dear Home for the Holidays:
You might open up a very bad situation Bringing your boyfriend
home for Christmas. Since your parents have never had discussions
with you about your lifestyle, It might not be safe to assume their
comfort level with it. By forcing them to deal with it in their home at
Christmas, You might get more than you bargained for. My
suggestion would be to begin by yourself either on the phone or in
person, Having conversations about their feelings toward this issue.
After you know that they are comfortable with you, you can begin to
find out their comfort level with seeing you in a relationship.
Springing all of that on them at once my end up disastrous. And it
could possibly affect your relationship. Take it slow and make sure
things are ok before you jump off the deep end and possibly drown.

Ask Aunt Pearl
Dear Aunt Pearl:
My issue is that my boyfriend can’t be satisfied sexually. We have
great sex but he seems to be insatiable. After a two hour session,
within five minutes he’s ready for round two, three and four. I
cannot keep up with him. I’m 15 years older than he is. I think
that he may begin to cheat on me because I can’t satisfy him the
way he wants it. I’ve never had this issue before. Most men can’t
handle me for the one session. I’m a thick 10 inches. He takes it
like a champ, with is great for me. But after one nut, I’m done for
the night. What can I do to bridge this gap between our sexual
appetites.? I really like this guy. We have a great time together. I
think he could be the one.
Dear Once is Enough:
I’m sure this guy is your dream come true, but you have to be
careful what you wish for. Sounds to me like a extreme case of
mismatched sex drives. You felt that what you’ve been providing is
more than enough until he came along and proved you wrong. My
suggestion is to have a talk with him and find out if there is
anything that can curb his desires. Maybe there is something
different you can do that can further satisfy him. You also might
want to talk to him about his past relationships. You might just be
the best or at least the closest he has found to his match. You
probably should try and step your game up and meet him halfway.
He might just be testing you to see what you have to give. But don’t
hurt yourself old-timer. If he is unsatisfied, he’ll let you know. He
doesn’t sound like he is the shy type.
If you have a question or situation that you would like Aunt Pearl
to help you with, send your letter to
askauntpearl@moccamag.com or you can submit the letter
from the comments page at www.moccamag.com.
